  • The song is great because it's represents a common truth about living.

  • In an effort to silence Pete Seeger our Gov't put a 17 yrs restriction on his TV and radio apperences it wasn't until "66 or 67" that pete unleased his protest songs that had great meaning to the main stream whether you were for or agaist the war in vietnam you listened to the music.

  • @andrewcowe0 Really?

  • Solomon probably wrote the words, except for "A time for peace, I swear it's not too late," which was written by Pete Seeger.

    Pete Seeger wrote the melody.

Judy Collins' folk arrangement was by her and Jim (Roger) McGuinn.

When Roger McGuinn did the song a few years later, it came out sounding folk rock - and that's what The Byrds played.

  • Solomon (971-931 B.C.) wrote it in Ecclesiastes 3. He is Kohelet who wrote it when he was backslidden from God. So it took until the 1960's to turn it to a melody.

  • @rosskunkler:

Thank you for sharing that I never new that before the first time I heard this song was actually this version on PBS I later heard the other versions by the Birds and Animals but when I heard this I thought it had a biblical sense to it but I could never put my finger on it this is my favorite version of it though I truly thank you for showing this to me and PBS

  • @thebomberrock I am glad you like my comment. I used the Rose Bible Timeline to place the dates and my knowledge of Biblical History to explain who wrote it. If you want to know more about this passage of scripture, just message me.

  • The Byrds nor Peete Seeger wrote the words. Solomon(971 B.C. - 931 B.

  • never realised till now that The Byrds didn't write this song.

  • love the contrast between this and The Byrds' version...both are great, but I really, really love the simple power of these beautiful duets, with non-electric guitars. But both are outstanding. Man, it was great being a teenager in the 60s...I miss those days so much!

  • thanks for posting, so nice to hear them together. so lovely. her voice is different than Joan Baez' , she has that vibrato. And I've always preferred the emotional quality in Judy Collins' voice. Works well with Pete Seeger's voice.

  • sounds the same as Joan Baez

  • Rien de tel pour aller dormir le coeur un peu plus léger...

  • Nice song, but its kind of depressing, looking at a life as a zero sum game.

  • let there legacy live on people dont let the world go corrupt!

  • What a great moment !!! Thanks...

  • A great song, one of my very favorites, I love Judy Collins, I also loved the Byrds version which really made this song popular. In the 60's I had every album that Judy Collins made and every album of the Byrds

  • @Clayton1949 Judy Collins's voice is like crystal.

  • Cohelet! Thanks Salomon and Seeger!

  • I was six... and already a hippie. Thank you SO much for posting this. It quenched a soul that didn't even realize it was parched. Peace. ☺

  • A historic clip!!!!.....What voices, what chemistry between them and such a lovely song......A rare treat for all music-lovers.....If they Angels sing, then they would sing like Collins....and Baez, of course. My endless gratitude to the uploader. Greetings from Greece.

  • When the poet wrote this, the scientists (of whom there were none) had not yet figured out that the earth turns on its axis.

Poets are usually way ahead of scientists.

  • @jameshbird

Ancient world... no scientists. You're kidding me, right?

    WhoisAristotlefor$400Alex

    Y_Y I am disappoint, internet.

  • I love those 60s made acoustics

  • My favorite singer, Judy Collins singing a beautiful song. I could listen to this all day and night

  • my fav video of all time!!

  • Wrote thousands of years ago for the bible and put to music so beautifully

  • Great Judy Collins!

  • Such a beautiful clip, enhanced by Judy's and Pete's conversation. The power of song, the power of sharing. There's such chemistry between them as they sing. See also the clip (I think from the same show) of Judy and Pete singing "Wild Mountain Thyme"---the way Pete leans in to listen to Judy sing is pretty endearing....

  • This video is ANTHEM for all Americans who want civil rights, peace and justice. Pete Seeger is...erm....a cherished living legend walking amongst us. God Bless you Pete! We love you!

  • too bad the hologram screwed up and we saw what was going on.

  • Haunting antiquity.

  • Saw this last night on PBS. Had to see if I could find it on youtube. WOW! This is really fabulous! The song is timeless. Thank you Judy and Pete! Thanks for posting

  • @dongmo1 PBS is where I saw it too! I love PBS, and really am inspired by Pete Seeger!

  • Here comes the sun ;-)

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I like the Rainbow Quest excerpts for always showing nice talk and excellent songs performed by great musicians.

  • Judy and Pete....what beautiful music and song...thanks

  • My drama/college writing teacher made me fall in love with this song. Every time I here it I get the chills its so beautifully written. Words can not explain.

  • Whenever I get stressed out, I go to this video and it helps calm me down. It is no accident that Judy Collins is my favorite singer of all time.

  • Pete: "Gee how proud that makes me"

Judy: "Oh Pete that's such a beautiful song"

Really beautiful, that's made my day :)

  • Look at me, I'm looking meaningful.

  • i don't know if they had a live audience for rainbow quest but if they did they were bloody lucky people!

    How good is this.

  • I was 15 when they recorded this. She was beautiful - their voices wonderful - and they and people like them inspired an entire generation to embrace the world around them with concern, justice and hope.

  • @lichtbroeder

I saw Judy two years ago. She's still beautiful, although her hair has changed colour now;Blond,I think.

Her stunning version of "Amazing Grace" has been used ,all too frequently,IMO, to herald many of my beloved family members into the next world, but that is not her fault!.

  • Judy's right that Pete wrote the melody. He also wrote the lyrics in that he took selected passages from Ecclesiastes, rearranged their order, added the refrain & the "I swear it's not too late" line. He didn't just lift a passage intact & put it to music, he took prose & made it into a poem & a song.

  • Her voice is so clear and she sounds great with Pete.

Do you have when they sang "Go Lassie Go"?

  • It was already on youtube, but for a song so beautifully sung as this one that doesn't matter at all.

  • Glad to hear you enjoyed it. The difference with my clips, beyond the better video image quality, is that I have included the conversations between Judy and Pete which add a lot of details to the background of the music.

    Phil (betahifi)

  • Yeah, I noticed those. Good idea to include them. :)

  • @betahifi Do you have, or do you know if their are more songs from that same show?

  • So old but yet so relevant!

  • Yes, thousands of years old & still very true.
