  • Very cool - thanks!

  • there is a latency when i apply the prefered method with the cable switcher when i hit the keyboard.

in the original way you show where the arp is assigned directly to the track there is no latency!!!

is there a way to use the preferred method without latency OR is there a way to engage the arp notes in the hyper window after the arp is assigned to the individual midi instrument??

    thanks PETE

  • AWESOME TRULY AWESOME!!!

  • How do you record th cable switcher?

  • Is it possible to change your arppegiate settings when you use a cable switcher without starting from scratch every time?

  • Very cool. I have been using Logic since the emagic days and I have hitherto shown what amounts to an embarrassingly tepid degree of interest in the environment. But this has inspired me to jump in again and try out some new ideas. Great video.

  • You are a great help, pitty i hadn't found you earlier as now i have pulled out all of my hair. Thanks a lot for the vids geezer!!!!

  • you have to be holding down a chord also.

  • How do you control the rate and direction of arpeggiation once the arpeggiator is placed before the sequencer input?

  • fantastic! ive been using logic for a year now, and you make everything so clear and easy to understand

  • dude your videos are Phenomenal! thanks a lot for sharing! have a Happy New Year!

  • I've been trying to figure this out by myself, but thus far I have failed miserably. How can you hook up two MIDI keyboards and have them play different software instruments? Thanks for the videos!

  • Awesome videos! I have been trying to understand Logic Pro from the manual, but it's really though.... this is the perfect way to learn the program! thanks!

Could you explain how mapped instruments works? and how to compose drum notation?

  • thank you so much this is gonna be so usefull to me :D keep it up

  • Thanks for your Videos. They are helping me a lot. Plz don't delete them any time soon.

  • You... you are a smart mother fucker...

  • I would just like to add that routing a button before the cable switcher assigned to the appropriate midi channel of a physical button on my controller is a convenient way to toggle the arpeggiator on and off without entering the environment window each time you want to use this.

  • My arpeggiator will not arpeggiate, Ninja. I am in PLAY.

    *shakes fist*

  • To amend, it will arpeggiate, but not exclusively. In addition to playing back the arp'd chord, it also plays back a sustained triad of the notes being arpeggiated.

  • The arppegegiator only plays back after I recorded. It won't work in play or in record only after I play back.

  • Mate do you know how to split the midi Input SUM, to get 2 instruments to play in logic simultaneously?

  • I've got the pressure pads on my Axiom set up to give program messages that trigger the cable switcher, such that pad 1 corresponds to "0" on the cable switcher, pad 2 corresponds to "1" and so on. Then again, I'm a drummer, and I much prefer hitting stuff vs. knobs or faders.

  • He's right, you are the MAN! I have a question. I have connected my roland V-drums to logic and I am getting them to talk to each other, as I can see the notes (beats) being played but the sound only comes back out through my V-drums earphones and wont record into logic. What am I doing wrong? could you direct me to one of your fab vids that may help with this? Thanks

  • You are the MAN!

  • wow thanks so much man. I just put a whole bunch of 2 and 2's together.

  • This was amazingly helpful. I just got logic from my engineer and its lovely. Doing damn near everything in the box works wonders for my creativity, no more using a bunch of programs and technicalities. Thanks "ninja". Im on youtube just searching for any and all tutiroals. PEace

  • Logic Genius!! Are u on the logichelp forum? Also step sequencing in logic 9

non-ultrabeat. Is there a way to do this?

  • money!

  • Can anyone figure out how to get MIDI IN into an EFX insert on an audio track ? ( in Logic 8 )

eg : Arturia Minimoog V can be opened as an EFX on an audio track, in order to use it's filters on the audio track.

But doing this seems to lose it's ability to receive MIDI from a physical input. (a keyboard)

The only way at present to trigger the external in, is to click a key on the GUI itself on the screen. No good for recording it into the sequencer obviously, as no MIDI info is coming in.

  • Hey who needs the manual when we got Ninja Dave. ;)

  • How would this method differ if I wanted to arpeggiate for instance an external hardware synth such as the Juno 106 coming in to logic on an external midi track ?

  • Or you could buy Sonar, right-click on the midi track, left-click "arpeggiator" and start recording. I wish Sonar ran on a Mac though.

  • I finally get it. This by far the best way to create arpegiation in logic. I wonder if it would work the same using chord memorizer.

  • Very helpful, super!!!! Thanks!

  • very helpful. and you are a very clear and detailed teacher. i thought the zoom was distractingly close though. had a hard time understanding where things were in relationship because it was all so close. but it was a good video, and thanks for helping, i'm just offering my suggestion to pull back the zoom a little bit. thanks!

  • Hey Dave,

So I followed your steps, but the Arpeggiator only works when I am in record mode. When I play my midi keyboard while i'm not recording, it does not arpeggiate. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    William

  • The arpeggiator needs timing to know how to arpeggiate; you have to be either recording or press play to have it arpeggiate!

  • Comment removed

  • I could watch these vids for days, Dave. Its like standing under a beautiful cool waterfall of knowledge. I feel younger afterwards.

  • Great tutorial thanks a lot.

  • Any idea how to convert rnpn data to cc in logic environement??

  • you are awesome.

  • can you create a midi control for the 'switcher?'

  • brilliant tutorial, helping me out lots. arpeggiators rule all.

  • i dont understand why you need an arpeggiator if you can just draw in arpeggio-d notes in the piano roll, or play them on your keyboard.

    handy, sorta. essential, no.

  • Yeah that's the way to get a good stable music production environment ...

  • My mind has been blown~!! O.o

  • The first time I watched this video I didn't have a clue what you were talking about! But Now I completely understand it. I've implemented it into my setup and it works great.

  • Beautiful. I've been looking for a way to arp a VSTi Juno 60 for the longest time just like my hardware one. Is there any way to make the arpeggiator variable speed in real time?

  • So the only way to arp. an inst. is when you hit play?! even when i did the cabelswitcher thing it did not ar. until i hit play :(..

  • Great video,

i've got a problem with logic:

when u are working on a project you'll have several instrumnets and each of them will have some effects on them, my problem is the instruments that i dont have effects on will have alot of empty effect slots.how do i remove the empty slots? anyone!?

  • Your videos are fantastic. I sincerely thank you for the effort you have put into these.

  • THANKS A MILLION!!! you rock! logic for life

  • Very helpful!!! How do we set up patch select lists? I want to be able to select patches from keys and modules from within Logic.

    Thanks,

    -BigShiid

  • This works with Express, doesn't it?

  • THIS is the guy. You can also watch Mr Mig or DrewPearson. MagnetMediaFilms got some. Want to rename videos to Log 1, Log 2. How to block stuff? (like expertvillage) when looking for Logic.

I'm want in pianoroll: click a note and you hear it. OK Hold Apple-click and you hear ALL notes in that line area. Teh chord. Why not? That's Logic..

And just placing the cursor to the left of note and playback goes from there, not have to go up and click a thin bar somewhere, you can't work fast that way

  • thsfour,I just tried this and I have the same problem with latency, but I haven't checked yet any ways to solve it.

But this is a brilliant video, thankfully there is someone to show us this, since at the logic help page it is impossible to make much sense! So thanks for uploading!

  • Who comes up with this stuff??? And how did you learn it all?

  • RTFM.

  • you are awesome.

  • Hi and thanks for the video. When I try the same setup there is a latency from when I hit the key and when it actually leaves the arpeggiator. I.e. I set it to play 8th notes. Hit my key in time with the click but it won't start playing until the second 8th note after the downbeat. This is the same for any subdivision I choose. Anybody else have that problem?

  • OK, I think my last question has been answered earlier in the comments, I will try. Any you are sooooo cool to post this stuff. Your time spent doing this is very appreciated!!!

  • Thanks so much. I spent a half a day learning how to do that, I wish I had known about these videos, it would have taken me 10 minutes. But I second NILPOINTZEROs question. And can I use the same Sampler on different tracks simultaneously, with one track arrpegiated and one not (using the same sampler or instrument)

  • you are a genius you have opened my eyes!

  • is there a way to set up a key command or something to switch up the cable selector without having to go the enviroment window and clicking on it every time?

for example, if you were recording a track and needed to switch on the arpeggiator after the first piano verse or something?

  • The environment window never made sense to me until watching this video. Thanks!

  • Wow, I actually understood that. Well explained sir.

  • hey thanks a bunch for all the info. I have a Yamaha DTXpress3 going into an M-Audio Fast Track pro...when i strike a drum pad nothing happens in Logic. What do i need to do? Thanks

  • So if the Cable Switcher is turned off on track 2 and turned on on track 1, Logic will remember that everytime the song is played back?

  • amazing!

  • That's fu__ing rugged!

    Domo arigato gozaimasu!

  • clever stuff =]

    very handy

  • Keep up the great work my man, the appregiator is one of my favourite tools!

  • Thank you so much for all this effort, I have been using logic for a couple years yet I have already learned some invaluable tricks, and I still have a ton of videos to go!

  • great!!thanx

  • I ... I didn't.... I didn't know :'(

anyway, enough with the drama stuff.. What I mean is: very useful tutorials you have here, logic is finally opening up completely to me!

  • thank you very much for that post ! did you know if it possible to use the arpeggiator live....i mean without pushing down the record button?

  • really useful

  • I did this and it worked finally! But when i play the keyboard, the pedal thats hooked up to it doenst work, any solutions?

  • cool, so it's like hitting the tab key in reason and changing the cables.

  • some of the best tutorials on the youtube. thanks man! as a max/msp user i always wanted to understand the environment section better!

  • Great video series on Logic 8. Opening up a lot of ideas as I watch and learn. thanx.

  • Mitico!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for everything from the basics of Logic to the Environment.Could you show us how the transformer object can be utilised too ? I Purleeeze ?

  • o finally thanx 4 the help!

  • what is the arpeggiator mainly used for>?

  • Arpeggios, they are mostly used in electronic music like Dance or Trance. They are also commonly used in classical chords but you wouldn't want to use it in this instance. You would want a more human arpeggio and well using an arppegiator won't achieve that soooo,

Slap it onto a Supersaw synthe and you got your generic Electronic lead.

  • Is there a way to add the cable switcher to the arrange window so that you don't have to go back to the environment to switch the cable?

Awesome videos. Thank you very much and Happy Holidays!

  • What I choose to do is assign a dedicated fader on the axiom set to have a range of only 0-8, and it's controller is the same as the input of the cable switcher. This allows a hard-cabled dedicated control that keeps you from ever having to go to the environment if you like.

Happy Holidaze to you as well!

  • Yup, it's a five-star.

  • Can I "arppegiate" without recording. I like to hear it with having to record.

  • You have to at least be in PLAY. The sequencer has to be running.

  • Best guy on the tube. Celine dion is best girl. Both best at what they do.

    Thhhanks

  • You The Man!!

  • thanks for the introduction to this feature :o)

I've got the two logic pro books but it's helpful to have someone talk you through it as well

  • I followed this step by step TWICE and it never arpeggiated.

  • Make sure the song is playing when you want to arpeggiate it. It will only arpeggiate if Logic is in PLAY. Did that work?

    *bows*

  • Awesome, thanks! That worked.

  • Awesome!

  • Thanks so much for doing this video. SERiously.

  • Nice! Thank you very much for taking the time to explain the Environment window. The Environment tends to give me a headache due to the confusion I have trying to figure out what everything is. But, this explains something things very very well. Thank you. I'm going to boot up Logic 8 now and check it out... :o)

  • Nicely explained. Sometimes I like to record the chords with no arpeggiator, then experiment with the arpeggiator until I find something I like. In that case, I record the tracks on an instrument track, then re-assign the track object directly to an arpeggiator, which is cabled right back into the sequencer input. Then, by just selecting the correct instrument in the arrange window and hitting play, you can play with it, and when you're happy, just hit record. I *LOVE* the environment!

  • awesome awesome awesome. you are oarsome!

  • Ar-PEH-giator, not ar-PAY-gi-AY-tor.

  • Hi, fantastic stuff. You really have a knack of explaining things well. I'd to playback my yamaha xg midifiles. Can you explain how to set up the environment window so they will playback with true xg voicings and fx. thanks so much. by the way, im on logic 7

  • Hi, your tutorials rocksss! easy to see & follow! thanks a lot.

Is it possible to reocrd a Synthisizer's built-in arpegiator (like ROB PAPEN predator or Native Instrument FM8)?

    Thanks 4 the videos

  • I can't begin to explain how easy you made that sound. Thanks dude, you're tutorials rank amongst the best I have ever seen. On any subject. Your voice is perfect for this kind of thing :)

    Cheers

  • This is just awesome.

  • THANKS SF NIJA!!! I produce house / trance . I'm pilling my hair out with this logic 8. U make it easy , er !

    pilot (s.f.)

I will be playing one of my logig tracks @ temple with mark farina and doc martin in a few weeks < thanks again.

  • I can't get this to work... I don't know what I'm doing wrong... help me!

  • it wasn't working for me until i had two tracks open. (couldn't see the arpeggiator parameters in the arrange window, just said instrument, till i had another track in the session.)

  • Thanks for the great tips!!

  • u are really great dude, keep it up

  • És o Maior... :)

    Viva Logic 8

    Viva Portugal...

Really it's scary stuff... But you make it look easy.

    TKS Bro.

  • beautiful...It's like a MAX program...So helpful...

  • wow! I've been scared of the environment window since Emagic owned Logic. You finally made me step into uncharted territory & let me see the true face of Logic! Thank you

  • great job....thanks for shedding light on this.

the environment window has always scared the crap out of me, but all that's over. thanks again

  • That was FANTASTIC! I was grumbling the other day that Logic didn't even HAVE an arpeggiator!! Lol. Awesome tutorial, I've learnt HEAPS!! Thanks for the time you put into these, it's most appreciated! Cheers from New Zealand! :-)

  • I just thought I'd let you know how much your videos mea to me. When I open up Logic 8 to start putting together music I just feel like I'm lost in a desert, everything is just so unfamiliar, but the more videos of yours that I watch, the greater my knowledge and feel for Logic becomes. You are seriously the only reason I know how to use Logic decently. Thank You!!! Micah

  • hi david

yes very cool. be awesome if u did a pt 3 '7 more even further than this! awesome work mate

  • Question - is all of this manual signal flow really necessary? What is the point of configuring the program that way? I just bought Logic Studio 8 and feel as though it is going to be possibly more complex than I wanted - but I'm guessing that Logic Express is the same way? As an aspiring professional composer, I suppose I should go ahead and stick with the full deal, correct?

  • Latsonkrypton, in Logic, and especially version 8, you really don't NEED to understand the environment to record and play stuff. But it opens up some incredible creative options if you like to tinker with stuff. I hope you're finding Logic fun!

  • you are a fucking god amongst men.

  • Hey SFLogicNinja,

BIG fan of your videos! Thanks for all that you do!

One quick question about the arpeggiator and using the cable switcher...

If I was to set it up like you had in the final segment of the clip, and then record a lot of different arpeggiated tracks, would they all be subject to the same arpeggiator and the same arpeggiation (i.e. 8th notes or 16th notes)?

I like to have different arpeggiated note values but it would be nice to use the Click and Ports method as you showed.

  • Environment has always been the most difficult part of Logic for me to comprehend. But after viewing your tutorial I'm looking forward to working with the Environment screen. I've always been told the Environment screen is one of the highlights of Logic.

Once again you have opened my eyes and shown me the light.

Please keep up the great work!

    Bless you.

  • Amazing! You rule.

Just a question, is it possible to assign a physical control like a rotary encoder/button on a midi keyboard to control the cable switcher?

  • YEp.

The cable switcher has a MIDI input. You can see it in the inspector. You just run the physical input to it as well.

    *bows*

  • *points at sflogicninja*

    "That guy!"

    *nods*

    <3

  • Thanx ....You have open up the clouds!! lol ...Quick though??

Is there a shortcut to toggle the cable switcher?

  • thnx ninja for helping noobs like me out should be more of you :D

  • cheers for that, i properly understand the environment now. i could use an arpeggiator before but i was always doing it in a really round about way.

  • thats really cool u let us understand this...you rock man..

  • Ninja:

Thank for sharing your knowledge with us! I'm a long time user of Logic, and your videos have piqued my interested to look under the hood again. Keep 'em coming!

    Jesse

  • Excellent work. Made a complex aspect of Logic easy to understand :) I would NEVER have found out about the cable switcher.

    Big up.

  • excellent, very nicely done.

re: the cable switcher, would this mean that it's all or nothing, as in, all audio instrument tracks in your arragement would be appeggiated on playback if cable switcher is routed to it or does this only affect incoming midi?

I guess the idea is to switch cable to appegiate( if that's the desired effect), record midi data and then switch back :)

I shall experiment. It's all very cool. Thanks

  • IT's very important to remember the signal flow I laid out. anything that is in between the physical input and the sequencer input will be processed before it hits the arrange window, hence the need for a cable switcher.

    Good luck!

    *bows*

  • Thank you very much!!!!! It's pretty cool to understand this different things as you're showing it up =)

    sorry about my english)

    hello from Russia!)

  • Absolutely incredible! Next I need to understand how to set up my KS Pro 88, Logic doesn't seem to like it very much because it's not on the list.

  • I suggest setting up all of the knobs in Enigma with common controllers and assigning only what you absolutely NEED for Logic. Little colored stickers also help to keep the button madness to a minimum...

  • Thank you! Since installation of the controller was so easy I didn't bother using the software it came with. The main problem I have setting it up with computer software is getting the midi transport functions to work. I'll try this out as soon as I can get back to my midi controller.

  • Use the key command window to assign the transport controls. The key command window listens to midi messages as well.

  • Dude, you're a legend, go raibh míle maith agat (thanks a million)

    Dublin

  • Awesome. Thanks!

  • Wooooww man, i wasnt expecting to download so much data to my brain at 4:50 am! ive gotten mad sometimes with logic because of the enviroment, suddenly everything is much cleaarer. Thank you from argentina,

  • Claro! buenos noches de San Francisco. Yo nessecito practicar mi espanol. Take care, C! I'd sure love to visit Argentina. I've heard some awesome music from there.

    *bows*

  • Hella dope, again!

    Man, this is superb!

    What a ninja, indeed!!!

    London, UK

  • thank you so much. your getting some good karma points for this.

  • i just signed up to say "well done"! great video.

  • Great tutorial. got a question...for starters I don't mess with the environment, so I'm pretty green...but is there a way to connect a midi control to the cable switcher? that way you could use a button or something to switch it.

  • Yep. Just create a knob between the pysical input an the cable switcher and assign a dedicated controller number to switch the cable switcher. Make sure the range of the knob is the same as the CS input control value...

  • Dude, you are awesome......

  • Awesome tutorial! love your videos! thanks for posting them!

  • Thanks, great tutorial. I would hope there would be a way to set up one or two tracks within the Arrange windows for an arpeggiator or two without having to touch the Environment window or throw a switch. I'd rather have a root canal without novocaine than go to the Environment window. :-) Is there a good way to set up a permanent arpeggiator track in a template (that shows the arpeggiated notes, not the chords) without having to go back to the Environment?

  • Nope. Logic is based on the environment, even though Apple has created an arrange window-based workflow. We'll probably see some kind of arpeggio option in the future, but until then it's all about the environment. Once you get your head around the path that midi takes in the environment, you can create things that you can't get anywhere else. If you can't handle the environment let me know. Maybe I'll create a template for you.

  • This is a great tutorial, you should have more related to the environment, great stuff. Thank you!

  • Thanks, z. I may return to the environment in a more advanced tutorial. Check for it in a couple months. If you have a specific request, I'll do a vid for ya. The environment can scare the hell out of most folks. It's not for the faint of heart! Thanks for watching, z!

  • ahhhhh...much light has been shed

  • All of the techniques I've shown so far are in Logic 7. Logic 8 is a pretty awesome upgrade, but you can totally kick ass in 7 as well. Most of the upgrades in 7 are GUI based, (except stuff like swipe comping which is worth its weight in GOLD) Can you get the $250 upgrade?

  • thanks. is it worth upgrading to Logic 8? i'm assuming you can do most of this stuff in 7 right?
