Actually, the final extra you can unlock allows for an alternate ending which allows you live if you kill all the planes. Then, Jack and the guy that owned the ship take an airplane and destroy the headlights focussed on Kong. Eventually, Kong climbs down and he is taken back to Skull Island and there is a cutscene from the plane's view showing Kong in his lair. I personally think the original ending with Kong dying is better though because there's more emotion in that one.
