My first ever plane trip was on a PSA 727-100 from San Francisco to San Diego in 1974! The aircraft was painted in the then new PINK/LIGHT ORANGE/RED livery. The stewardesses wore uniforms that were the same colors as the aircraft was painted on the outside! They wore red bowler hats, short mini skirts, hot pants, and red go-go boots!
I rode this airline once in August of 1979 when I was 13 years old. My older sisiter was in the Air Force at the time and we were going to visit her. We flew from Ontario Airport CA. to Las Vegas Airport because she was stationed at Nellis AFB in Vegas. It was a pretty bumpy flight since we were going over a lot of mountains and hills. Still, it was a neat airline though. I remember all of the TDVD commercials for them. Nice video!
@frankmunoz27 Me too. That was a class act. A good company to fly with. We always flew PSA until they went out of business. Very safe and friendly. Boy do I miss them.
@Capt777harris Harris, is that you? Harris! Harris! You're a funny little man, Harris. Sad, but funny. In an empathetic sense, mind you. But here is where we agree: PSA was an excellent airline. Star-crossed, but excellent. The best to serve the West. The Real Best in the West. Sorry Howard. PSA was the whole slam-diggity, shiteree. Agreed upon. Now remember what I said about acceptance Cap'n.
remember when amercan air travel was great? i sure miss those times. walk up to the check-in counter, give them your bag, they gave you back a smile ad you boarded the plane. the food was great to. and the flight crew(females) were drop dead gorgeous! what ever happened to the airlines? So sad. what ever happened to california? Very sad!. Liberals can really make a mess of things, that is a fact. I dont even recognize my state anymore. I miss the helms trucks also. Mmmmm smell those donuts.
They didn't technically go out of business, they were just bought by US Airways. US Airways downgraded most of PSA's presence in the west and just got more pilots, aircraft, and a few gates here and there on the west.
the liberal president jimmy carter ruined air travel (and airlines like PSA) when he signed the "airline deregulation bill" in the late 70's. The state of CA's plight can be attributed to liberals as well. When Pelosi and Boxer are done here they'll be nothing left of CA. Just a bunch of illegals being supported by the Federal Govt. We'll all go out of business together. Thanks to the liberals!!!!
No, it was an airline all it's own. It was an intrastate airline for the state of California, while Southwest started as an intrastate airline for Texas. USAirways bought PSA in the mid-80s, and Southwest pretty much took over the California intrastate market.
PSA was a great airline, sadly absorbed by USair. Their flight attendants were famous for their beauty, passenger care, good humor, etc. and were popular with the (male) passengers!!!!
My cousin was a Captain for PSA. He was married to one of those fight attendants. She was on board when PSA 182 went into the ground in San Diego on Sept 25, 1978. 80% of my entire school witnessed that crash from 4 miles away. Hard to miss a plane on fire in the sky. After PSA lost 2 other jets, they had no choice but to be taken over by US Air, which is terrible. I guess you can say "Southwest Airlines" took PSA's place with cheap flights.
I'm sorry to hear about your cousin's loss. I had a teacher who was a student at St. Augustus at the time, and he told us about how they had to use the auditorium as a morgue.
Sept 25, 1978 was a sad day for all people who love aviation. The crash of 727-214 N533PS and the loss of a total of 144 lives was not in vain, it led to the development of the TCAS. My deep sentiments to you and your family, I was a 10 year old boy when this accident happened and I´ll never forget those 2 photos taken by Hans Wendt, showing the 727 badly damaged and in fire, going to crash at the intersection of Nile and Dwight streets. May they rest in peace, we´ll never forget them.
I gotta tell you I am in law enforcement now. I have many friends who also witnessed the crash. One person I know was delivering bottled water in the alley where the plane hit. It was a hot morning (9AM) and he decided to get a drink at market instead of pulling up to his next delivery. Exiting the store, the plane flew a few hundred feet over his head at a steep bank. He could see people looking out the windows. The jet hit where he almost pulled up to his next stop! He survived by fate.
My co-worker's sister was a stewardess for PSA.
I like "catch our smile" better.

@avcomth
PSA was merged into US Air. Southwest is a totally different Airline that mimicked PSA's business model.

Hmm...PSA knows California best. Yup. It knows it so well it went out of business just like California is bankrupt and going out of business.
And did she just sing "Pee ee ess a?" Pee? Pee??

Flying was better when the airlines were regulated. Degregulation hasn't done much but make flying more miserable.
