  • i knit in a fashion apparently different from others....it's a method my mom taught me. I've been trying to figure out how to do cable stitches, but the continental method never made sense. This helps a lot. :D Thanks!

  • Would your method of knitting be continental method? I've never seen a right handed knitter knit like this. I wrap my string around my left forefinger, whereas you wrap it around your right. This was a very helpful video, thankyou. I've been trying to figure this out for a long time.

  • i cant seem to do this? it keeps coming out funny looking.

  • Thanks :)

  • This is going to help so much for my dissertation practical project. I was worried cabling was going to be really complex :)

  • I don't understand what you mean when you say "knit the knits and purl the purls

i'm a crocheter and I'm learning...i can't really tell the difference between the two...and the video is a little dark :-(

  • @Beauti2988 This may seem a bit late but Purl is the exact opposite of knit. It is literally the mirror opposite of each other as if you flip whatever your making around you will notice that the knit looks the same as the purl once you turn it around.

Purl is when you knit with the yarn in front

knit is when you knit with the yarn behind

  • @Beauti2988 also if you look at what your knitting you will notice there will be a yarn crossing the front of the loop on the left needle if it is purl while if the yarn crosses the back of the loop on the left needle it is a knit

  • Just what i needed! Fairly new to knitting and have been hiding from trying to learn to cable....but before my eyes appeared something that looked pretty darn good! Thanks!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. It helped me immensely. Your son asking you questions was adorable. (^_^)

  • :( ohhhhh, I tried doing this loads, and i swear im doing all the steps right, but it always goes wrong!! ><

  • this was great, thank you so much!

  • My first language is not english. I do understand everything but the thing that confuses me is purl. what do you mean by purl 6 stiches? Do i start my chain stiche on the third row right?

  • WOW thank you so much! i've been searching all day for a video on how to do a cable knit..all of them only explain one row and doesnt explain what to do next after the twist..OMG!! i love you!! :D thanks so much!!

  • this is brilliant........UR A VERY GOOD KNITTING INSTRUCTOR......and is very easy to follow

    thankkkkkkuuuuuuu

    mir x

  • This was so helpful! I'm going to go grab my needles and "mitt" along with you!

  • Thanks so much for this very clear and succinct video. You rock!

  • You could hardly see what you were doing, can you do another with a lighter yarn or more light?

  • Wonderful video! Cables have always scared me a bit :P. Your son is adorable :D.

  • this is the best video. You have explained with clear details. Thanks a lot!!!

  • Thank you very much for this extremely detailed video. I just did my first cable stich!

  • you just made cable sts look realy easy to me, i have never done a cable but i am going to try your pattern...... and your child was great too, making you explaine things!! xx

  • Neat! I've been dying to learn this knitting technique forever. I'm making a hat similar to the one you showed, so I want to add the cable knit into it. I'll probably practice a few times on some separate yarn though. ;) I used that same yarn to make a hat and booties set for my niece! Great fun. :)

  • hey there #VIDEOPOSTERID#, terrific video! It's way too bad that youtube aren't going to allow complete episodes and movies else youtube would become perfect. That's the reason why I RANDSET(use|started using|depend on|go with|go to|head over to)# "stream episodes (DOT) net" instead to watch more or less all of the tv episodes and movies that youtube does not have

    Knitting a Cable Stitch

  • I'm sorry I've been trying to understand this because you keep saying knit the knits and purl the purls but in your written instructions you wrote purl the knits and knit the purls according to the number of stitches that you start and end with so I'm a bit confused. Please explain. Thank you.

  • i just did it thanks soooo much!!!!!!!! ill attach a vid later :))

  • thank you so much im going to try this now my aunt just sent me a cable knitting hat pattern one problem i dont know how to cable knit though ahah ill try this now thanks you!

  • I thought it was a great video too. I am new to knitting and am teaching myself. Your directions were very clearly described. And, the children are priceless; made me yearn for the days when I had little ones asking me questions. Moral of the video: it sometimes help to explain things as if you were REALLY were talking to a three year old!

  • Thanks! Great vid, very clear! You're doing a service to all novice "mitters" ;-)

  • Thanks guys! Your comments are so fabulous!

  • You have the best video! The others that I have seen don't go the extra mile that you did. They just showed the first cable and that was that. Now I can knit cables! Thank you very much!

  • I searched for 2 hours before I found this video! It was great! You explained things in such simple terms! This should be the top hit for knitting cables!! Thank you so so much! I love the kids too!

  • this really is the best cable knit video out there. AfterI practced on ths pattern, I designed my own 3 cable scarf. It looks gorgeous. I love the hat the little boy is wearing, and I love how the kids start bothering her near the end of the video. I can relate!

  • do you have to cast on 14 stiches?

  • this is exactly what i was looking for a cable demo video that did a couple of rows and explained it vary clearly thank you very much this was incredibally helpful

  • Hello thank you so much!

This video was very comprehensive and helpful!!!

  • Thanks for the easy to follow video, I've just knitted my first cable stitches.....and they look like cable stitches :)

  • Hi! I'm a novice knitter and I just have a quick question, with your pattern on row six do I cable that row or do I cable row 7? Btw great video!

  • on row 6, you will go

    knit4 purl 6 knit 4

then start the pattern over, so you would do as row 1-6 instructed again=-) Hope that helps!

  • This is the best video explaining how to cable knit. Thank you!

  • Your kids sound adorable! Lol. This is the most helpful video I've found on cable stitching. The others I've found only do up to the cable stitch, and stop it there, not really touching on what to do afterward, but since you took it that one step further by showing us a few rows after, as well as posting the pattern, it unconfused my confusion! Thank you!

  • thankyou very much!! i have just knitted my first cable with your help. im really thankfull for your well explained video.thank's again ;)

  • Helpful, however we can't really see your stitches. A lighter yarn color, a better lit area, a better close up, and a white background (or a blank, solid color background) would help us to see the stitches. Cables are much simpler than I thought. Thanks.

  • I started knitting a month ago,and I always wanted to know how to knit cables.

you explained everything perfectly for me!

    :) Love Beckyboo

  • Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I am a beginning knitter and have been wanting to try cables. I think I'm ready to try it. Btw- love the additions of your kids, it sounds just like my house when I am trying to do something! lol. Though for me, it's peeling skin off of apples.

  • wow something just clicked in my head. I just started learning knit, I've been crocheting for about a year but that's in my family so it came easy, anyway I am making a scarf with ribbing and just realized a cable is the twisted part of ribbing basically. thank you so much.

  • thanks the tutorial was great! and you made it so easy! now how do i do the hat??

  • Thanks! Seems pretty easy. I am going to practice tonight. BTW: Your son's background comments are great!

  • Please...peel his orange

  • I did! I did! In fact, I have peeled MANY oranges for him since then! =)

  • Thank you so much!

    I finally get it :)

  • thank you, gr8!!!! i've tried everywhere to help with the cable thing but still dont get it, but it thx to you, i think i can do it, thank you ^^

  • I like the 'I'll peel your orange in a second' bit. Thanks so much for this! I'm working on fingerless gloves with cables on the back now.

  • Thank you for the lesson, came in very handy. Cute kid by the way.

  • Thank you SO much for your tutorial! I am excited to try the cable stitch for the first time.

Also, your son sounds so adorable. =)

  • this was great!! Thank you so much. I had no clue how to cable and no websites or videos were really healping. This was great! I can't wait to knit more cables. Thanks!

  • thank u so much Kate! I so exited now I can do it!! its 2:55AM now I can't stop knitting cables!!! thank u so much!!! you're the best!!!

  • Kate- thank you so much. Before watching your video, I was afraid to do anything but the basic knit stitch! You're the best!

  • Kate, you rock! Thank you so much. I am working on a cape that is all cables and it's my first experience and you explained it so well!! -Sarah

  • You're welcome! Wow, a cape? I'd love to see that!

  • I have searched and searched for a good video on cables, and finally found one! Thank you so much, the step by step process really helped me, and I must say, my cables look great.

    Thanks again!

  • You're welcome, glad I could help! Cables don't have to be scary!

  • Your boy sounds so cute. I felt like cuddling him. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Even I can now knit a cable. Thank you!

  • I cabled a lot easier with a cable needle. The curve it provide makes it easier to keep the stitches on and it doesn't get in the way like a dpn does.

  • Oh sure, cable needles are great if you have them, but it's good to know you can do a cable without it! Thanks for watching!

  • Try as hard as I can, I just can't seem to get the hang of the dpns. Could be because I'm just a beginner.

  • Oh my gosh! I've been wanting to learn how to cable for years now, and I never knew it was so easy! Thanks SOOOO much!! :)

  • Yay! You're welcome. =)

  • i'm so exited to try this!!!!!!!!

and go peel that orange! lol

  • When you knit the cables, is it suposed to have a hole on one of the sides?... And what is that fork/cable thing inbetween the other cables (on your sons cap), sorry im new at this. Thanks in advance =)

  • Hm, I'm not sure about holes on the side... Maybe if you tighten up your stitches on either side of the cable they would go away. And the line between the cable is simply two knit stitches with two purl stitches on either side. A little ribbing.

  • Hey! For the first time my cable stitch turned out! I can't tell you how many times I've ripped out stitches that didn't work while trying to get this stitch. I understood the basic stitch, but no one showed me what to do on the "wrong" side, or that the majority of the rows are just a combination of knit and purl with 1 cable row thrown in. My swatch looks beautiful and I can't wait to knit it into a cap and scarf. Thank you Kate!

  • You're welcome! Glad I could help!

  • ok, i tried this and its not working, i even took notes. it doesnt look that hard but mine didnt turn out for some reason. its all bunched up in the middle it looks like it kind of twisted but not quite there yet, can anyone help me!!!!!

  • It could be that you're twisting the needle the the cable stitches are on. When you put your stitches to be skipped on the extra needle make sure it's either a double-pointed needle or a cable needle (I used a double-pointed needle). Slide them on from left to right, let the needle hang in front, then slide the stitches over to the right and knit them off the other side. If you use a regular needle you'll have to turn the stitches to get them off and they'll get twisted. Hope that helps. Kate

  • Thanks! Since you're knitting it in the round you will always purl on either side of the cable and you will always knit the cable itself. And, no, I don't think your cable will show up without the purls on either side. You need the purls to make the cable pop up. Otherwise all you'll see is the little twist where you crossed stitches. That's my guess, anyway, I've never done a cable without a purl border...

  • Hey, great tutorial! I'm currently doing a hat in the round with turbo needles instead of 4 or 5 needles. I want to do a cable stitch, but does the cable-work not show up if it's not purled on either side?

  • awesome tutorial!

one suggestion would be to make the image a little lighter; it's very difficult to make out while you're knitting it.

can I make a request for a tutorial on knitting hats in the round? kthnx i luv u! ^_^

  • I know, this seriously is my very first video. I've worked out many of the kinks after this. And yes, I can do a knitted hat in the round. I'll work on that! Thank you!

  • Thanks! My first time filming and editing my own video!

  • "mitting"? that's very cute. Awesome video! You're a great teacher. I'll have to try that once my deformed scarf is done.
