Cheetahs and Cougars are the only big cats that purr.(No chocolate). Love bites do hurt so I have to be careful to keep any vulnerable areas protected.
I saw a video of pet cheetahs also purring like engines. Does anybody know: do all members of the cat family purr? Do any other animals purr? (Besides me when given chocolate.)

I bottle raised her from 3 day's old and spent every hour of every day for the first 18 months of her life so yes. I know her very well. But even though, she is still a wild cat so constant awareness is always key.
When she doesn't want attention, how does she react? That is the part about wild animals I hear is the most dangerous. Can you anticipate when she might be grumpy?
That is true. No matter how loving and docile they are, they are still wild cats and you never, NEVER drop your guard. Always be aware of your surroundings because even though they may not mean any harm, they still like to"play" and if you don't know what you're doing, you can get hurt or worse.
@TheCatmanDoodz Yes, like driving a car. But the Cougar is a lot prettier than the car with the same name. Life is about risks, and even you don't take any, you're going to die. That pretty girl sure seems worth it to me.
HI, omg this is so awesome but i would be carefull with her. when i get out of highschool i wanna have my own wolf sanctuary but idk how to do this. do i need some sort of training???
Amazing cat! I just relocated back to Florida so I can get a Siberian Lynx. Georgia won't allow any wild animals below F17. The Cougar was bumped to Class 1 for two reasons: 1) their popularity as pets, and 2) the variance in adult size. Depending on the origin of the cat's DNA, they range from a very manageable 80 lbs to an enormous 300 lbs. As with many other animals, the further north you go, the larger the specimen.
Kind people if to you the destiny of homeless animals is not indifferent, offer the small sum on support of a shelter of animals. It is necessary be registered in system webmoney and whenever possible to translate $ on the account wmz Z218679873024

As with all big cats, understanding that they are still wild animals, constant awareness is key. You never let your guard down. As loving as they can get, when they want to play, well that can be very dangerous. I don't have experience with Cheetahs as I've never had the pleasure of working with them. I did work with a few species of Leopards during my training and they are hard to read. But that's just my opinion.
@TheCatmanDoodz I've heard that technically, our little housecats are also much closer to wild animals than we think, certainly much closer to their wild ancestors than dogs. Our advantage here is that we're ten times bigger than them or more, plus selective breeding over a few millennium has given us pets with the best dispositions so generally they won't try to disembowel us (or run at the site of us). Do you agree, that even housecats are technically more on the wild side than we think?
@MarkQuinn2k7 I agree. It's really obvious; if I leave my windows open with the screens inside, my cat jumps up and prowls there for birds for HOURS. Also, the cougar is the closest relative to domestic house cats of all the big cats.
And I'd like to challenge your claim that it takes a millennium to domesticate animals. Look up the Russian domesticated fox. It only took a few decades, and about 40 generations.
@goober239 Well what I meant was that domestic cats first made regular contact with man a few thousand years ago. I imagine those who genetically leaned toward "friendly" were given scraps of fish, etc., while those who maintained the more mean or aloof traits did not. So it wasn't deliberate domestication at first, and therefore took much longer.
@goober239 I saw that article in National Geographic. It took 2-4 generations for domestication but as the geneticists continued the experiment the appearance changed too. The foxes got floppy ears, spotted coats, and shorter tails. The geneticists are trying to discover the genome for domestication. What changes in an animal that it accepts other species as companions? They want to sell them as pets otherwise they go to fur farms. I WANT ONE
@TheCatmanDoodz I knew a guy who used to take care of large cats I asked which was most dangerous,he said
all are wild.If they don'y know you,you have no business being in there cage.He turned his back on a leopard and it pounched on him, lucky his assistant was outside the cage.
@TheCatmanDoodz Is the couger the only animal your willing to do this with? Would you do the same thing with a lion or tiger? Or are cougers more "docile" for a wild animal.
What a gorgeous cat! How do you think cougars compare to similar sized cats like say leopards or cheetahs with respect to looking after one the way you do with Sasha?
I adopted her mother at six weeks old from a wild cat sanctuary. Her mother Catrina died in my arms on the operating table from cancer 2 months shy of her 13th birthday. It was the worst day of my life. But I'm very fortunate to have Sasha. As you can see the amazing bond of love we have. Sasha will be 11 in July.
awww what country do u live in and how do i get one im planning on getting my vets license and get all the training just so i can take care of my own pets and ill have a lot of open space and enough food for regular eating :) i have always wanted a big cat :)
I am a trained big cat handler with many years of experience. Anytime there's an incident, it is always human error. I thank you for your concern, I know they will always have their wild instincts, but I assure you, having bottle raised her from birth, I am always aware of her moods and know when to leave her be. Believe it or not.
It's not a good idea to have one of these as a pet. They are NOT fully domesticated, and they are still coursing with wild instincts. Although it may be cute and loving sometimes, it can turn on you at anytime and kill you in an instant.
They are SOLITARY animals, they have no need AT ALL for human companionship. These are not your average little kitty cat, this is a wild predator.
@Xgames13 Love is love. Look at that man. How many stories do you hear of dogs/cats biting their owner? Plenty. You treat them respect and they will treat you with respect.
That's until they grow up and develop their perception of solitude. Like I said, these animals can turn on you and attack. And being attacked by a cougar is not like being bitten by a dog, they can kill you VERY quickly.
@Xgames13 Actually, I think this guy could hold his own if the cougar attacked. Any grown man with half his senses could fend off a cougar. Injuries? yes, death? fat chance.
Normally I would agree with you but as the human race's need for more land grows, the"wild" is getting smaller every day. It's our responsibility to keep these beautiful animals from becoming extinct so I feel I'm doing my part by giving them a safe and loving home. In captivity they can live 25 - 30 years or more. In the wild they're lucky if they reach 10. What have you done to help?
i was actually going to ask something along these lines.
humanity is spreading, and growing. it seems to me that the first animals to be hurt by our presence are the big predators, because they require a large amount of mostly herbivores for prey, who in turn require even larger habitat to live off of.
i think the big cats, being large, purely carnivorous creatures, will one day go the way of the cat and dog.
@TheCatmanDoodz It's sad isn't it how their property is taken away from them with no regard! It kills me inside. I can't even look at the videos it breaks my heart. I love animals big and small. You are an angel. How is your giant putty tat doing!
I wish I knew the answer. All I know is that the change in classification is causing me problems. Although I am grandfathered in and am able to keep my baby, I now have to come up with a 2 million $ liability policy. This is not fair and is creating a huge problem as I can't afford it. In the 15÷ years of having these beautiful cats in my life and part of my family, not once was there an incident. If there's anyone out there who can help, please pass these videos around and let me know.
@TheCatmanDoodz That was the idea... For it to become too cost prohibitive for people to keep their animals. When the idiots who pushed this legislation lobbied, they didn't bother to explain how many otherwise happy well kept cats would be displaced and or euthanized.
class 1 or 2...? is that a hunting term... ? - sorry, I´m a zoologist (PhD) and cougars are still listed as small cats in every scientific source I know in opposition to big cats (Pantherinae) - this classification has (almost) nothing to do with weight... the snow leopard is a big cat even though it is smaller than some small cats...
You are incorrect. As of July, 2010, the cougar,(puma, mountain lion, etc.) was reclassified from a class 2 to a class 1 cat. That would make them a big cat. Besides, if they can grow to 280 lbs's, I'd say that's a pretty big for a cat. Do some more research.
Cougars are NOT big cats... systematically they belong to the small cats (Felinae) ... - only small cats can purr - it´s has something to do with the ossification (or lack of ossification) of the hyoid...
When i go to college im getting a degree in biology of animals and behaivar of animals a breeders license and a class 1 licesense its my dream to open a big animal haven actually
you have no idea how jealous i am of you! id love one of these but i dont know if irish weather is too cold, i assume id need some sort of license ye?
im just going to say this in plain english, the man who has the balls to get his face up a cougars, is one brave big balls mother fucker. i am scared of a god damn monkey or pitbull.
That is simply amazing! What a great bond you have with her. Something that is earned by trust on both sides over time. You are one of a priveledged few. I hope one day to have such a relationship with this great animal, the most beautiful of all large cats.
The Chausie is a great alternative. The Chausie also known as a Nile Cat is a cross between an African Golden or Jungle Cat and an Egyptian Mau. The Mau is a direct descendant of the Jungle cat which the Egyptians domesticated 4 to 6000 years ago. The Chausie can grow to 30 - 40 pounds. They are extremely intelligent and loving. My Chausie, Spok, is 16 years old and still plays like a kitten. He's about 30 pounds.
I think that a cougar might be a big adjustment for me at the start so ive started researching smaller wild cats. Right now im strongly considering a wild hybrid cat that has an african serval father and a bobcat mother. (not to be confused with a savannah cat which is a serval father to a domestic mother). Do you have any advice or recommendations?
Sasha was not "purchased". I adopted her mother, Catrina from a big cat sanctuary while volunteering and training for my class 1 and 2 license. Catrina passed away from cancer May of 2009.
Laws are strict as to owning big cats. I live in Florida and in order to possess a big cat you have to go through 1000 hours of training and have the proper facility. you must have at least two and a half acres of land and the enclosure has to pass the required space. We get inspected 2 times a year by The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Having these beautiful cats, I have 3, is a lifetime commitment and it takes a lot of hard work. I recommend you think hard before you act.
Yes, Ihad Sasha's mother. Catrina passed away May 19th last year from cancer. She was our Gentle Giant as she was 200 pounds. Just as loving and sweet as Sasha. I guess it runs in the family. I also have two Siberian Lynx we rescued from a "fur farm" in Canada. They're not as sociable being mistreated from birth till we got them at 15 weeks. But they are alive and healthy and get lots of love and care.
She will be 10 years old July 29th. Sasha was born in my back yard and I bottle raised her starting at 4 days old. Unfortunately her mother, Catrina, whom I've had since she was 6 weeks old, passed away from cancer last year, May 19th, just 3 months shy of her 13th birthday. In captivity Cougars can live 25 - 30 years.

I just did...
i shared with FB friends,. wonderful cats... I wish I could afford one :(
karinamayai 1 year ago

TheOnlyRealBeeQueen 1 year ago
@TheOnlyRealBeeQueen - Class 1 in relation to the type of permit required. Cheetahs were bumped up to class one as well.

That's adorable. I want one :D

TheCatmanDoodz 1 year ago
Cougars are NOT big cats... systematically they belong to the small cats (Felinae) ... - only small cats can purr - it´s has something to do with the ossification (or lack of ossification) of the hyoid...
TheOnlyRealBeeQueen 1 year ago
I stand corrected!!!

Why is it growling at u?
tomyferland1234 1 year ago
She's not growling. That's how she talks to me. It's a sign of affection.
TheCatmanDoodz 1 year ago
She's purring. Cougars are the only big cats that purr.

Catnip has no effect at all.

I wonder if catnip would be a bad idea.

TheCatmanDoodz 1 year ago
very beautiful cat i plan on owning a cougar too what do i feed them and does it stay with you in your house?
sunlogothetis 1 year ago
Yes, Ihad Sasha's mother. Catrina passed away May 19th last year from cancer. She was our Gentle Giant as she was 200 pounds. Just as loving and sweet as Sasha. I guess it runs in the family. I also have two Siberian Lynx we rescued from a "fur farm" in Canada. They're not as sociable being mistreated from birth till we got them at 15 weeks. But they are alive and healthy and get lots of love and care.
TheCatmanDoodz 1 year ago
Have you ever had smaller exotic cats prior to having a cougar?
ajcusn 1 year ago
She will be 10 years old July 29th. Sasha was born in my back yard and I bottle raised her starting at 4 days old. Unfortunately her mother, Catrina, whom I've had since she was 6 weeks old, passed away from cancer last year, May 19th, just 3 months shy of her 13th birthday. In captivity Cougars can live 25 - 30 years.
