I was surprised by the amount of humor they incorporated into this movie. Overall, it was well done, but the relationships didn't seem as well developed. Despite it having a running time of two and a half hours, I still think they left out a good amount of the story. However, as a stand-alone film, it's superb... It just doesn't have everything the book does.

This song makes up for it, though!

I never saw the movie until I finally read the book two years ago; then of course I had to see the movie because I could picture nobody other than Whoopi playing Celie. Good movie but somewhat watered downrom the book. Everybody made a big deal because Oprah was - gasp! - nominated for an Oscar but Whoopi was amazing.
