hry i know he was a power hitter but did the negro leagues measure the fences for all i known 100 of hishome runs couldve benn flyouts if he was i n the majors
As a power hitting catcher, I can't begin to tell you how much I respect this guy, 972 Home Runs? Fucking Ridiculous, Its just a tragedy that Mr. Gibson's greatness is tarnished by people's skepticism, and that he never got the chance to prove he ws truly the best because of the color of his skin. If Hank Aaron never played in the majors do you think people would really believe he would be theHR King? At least he's in the Hall, so its not a total shame. REPECT, JOSH...
The problem with the HR king thing is, no one knows how many home runs he really hit (Negro Leagues had a reputation for poor record keeping). FWIW, Wikipedia has him with 115 HR in 1,855 AB with a SLG% of .648 and ISO (Isolated Power, which is SLG-BA to remove singles) around .289.
White folks will always be second best to blacks in sports period, you think I'm lying; just watch ESPN. All the best athletes are black, just imagine how good these guys were back in the day. White folks just keep us out of shit and create their own heroes like Ruth, Williams, Dimaggio, knowing that players like Gibson couldn't play on the same field with them.
it's hard to say if he would be the home run king. Negro league baseball was very popular and they played everywheres. So i asume that some parks were smaller. It is a crying shame that he and many many many others never got to play in the big leagues. I do believe however that Satchel Paige was the best there ever was. Check out Ken Burns documentry on baseball, it's truely amazing.
@HennyHenn209 sorry have to dissagree there and im not even a ruth fan.ruth had alot beter pitching to deal with and many of gibsons homeruns were in the lesser dominican/mexican league.not taking anything away from him deffinetley a great player but you give babe ruth the pitching that josh gibson faced you might be talking 1000 lifetime homeruns
Gibson, of course, was an extremely gifted and powerful hitter. But the 800 figure is just a legend. The negro leagues did not keep many statistics, so it's impossible to know just how many home runs he hit.
Josh Gibson was the best catcher of all time.

Any baseball historian out there ever researched the science behind the strength and power of Gibson?
Any evidence out there regarding his diet? Exercise routine?
The athletes, trainers, and coaches of today certainly can learn much from the stars of yesterday.
