  • To all of you who keep saying the tranny needs replaced.....WRONG!!!!!!! When your tranny starts to go you begin to have slow shift, delays in speed pickup, hic-uping between speed. These are the signs of needing a replacement. This car needs the VSS replaced. Or the transmission speed sensor replaced. NOT THE TRANNY!!!! It's cheaper to replace a sensor then a transmission.

  • A lot of issues with this is mostly that your torque converter went out or even the transmission pump could be bad. Just when you get it fixed make sure you pay more attention with maintaning your tranny fluids.

  • Possibly a 4S tranny..."S" stands for Synchronous, meaning with respect to engine RPMs, the unit shifts in an order (1-2, 2-3, 3-4 and likewise in reverse), and often put unnecessary wear on the gears, resulting in tranny failure...

4N - "N" stands for Non-Synchronous, meaning with respect to RPMs, this unit shifts to the best gear option available without following the standard order, resulting in less wear...

  • did you fix it yet? what was what problem?

  • May have an issue with your "Shift Lever" that shifts your transmission. Located on top of your tranny.

  • The transaxle identification code can be found on the VIN tag found on the driver's door. It will be under the "TR" section on the lower right hand corner (1986-1997) or near the middle (1998-2006). 1986-1995 models will have a 5 letter code while 1996-2006 models will have a single letter code. An example of both style VIN tags are shown below.

Only the first letter is needed to identify the transmission if the tag has a 5 letter code.

    Code: L = AX4S X = AX4N

  • THIS IS FOR 99 TAURUS MODEL YEAR.

  • YOU CAN CHECK THE VIN NUMBER TO SEE WHAT TRANSMISSION YOU HAVE ON YOUR CAR..... AX4N (code X), OR AXODE/AX4S (code T or L) SO IF YOUR VIN NUMBER HAS AN X IN IT THEN YOU HAVE THE AX4N TRANNY AND IF YOUR VIN NUMBER HAS T OR L THEN YOU HAVE THE AX4S TRANNY.

  • try the fuse. haha

  • i know exactly what's wrong with it, IT'S A FORD

  • 99 duratec I can make it down the road about a km then it just keeps revving up I pull over and I have no reverse or drive then I shut it off for a few sec and I can go another km then the only way to keep moving is to floor it and it grabs just a bit to keep moving so I just get up to speed put to neutral shut the car off coast fire it up and so on I made it 20km home lol now it's parked

  • Could be a AXOD-E (AX4S) tranny gone bad...The 4S units are known to fail a bit more than the AX4N units...Something about the constant (fully electronic)sequential shifting (hence, the "S" in the tranny model #), as opposed to the 4N ("N" - non sequential), which somewhat relies on the engine RPMs to determine when the proper gear range should be applied...The 4Ns are a little (emphasis on little) more reliable, but it all depends upon driving habits and miles, of course...

  • this happened to my transmission as well. You are going to have to replace it bottom line. I spent 75 dollars on a flush which helped it for about another 5000 miles but then it just totally went out. This is standard for the 98 taurus.

  • that milage is about right for the first failure, if its not that its rust or head melting

  • that milage is about right for the first failure, if its not that its rust or electrical systems

  • My 98 Taurus does the exact same things.

  • the vulcan motor huh, your problem is probibly the fact that you need a new tranny, taurus trannys go out anywhere from 90K to 114K. make sure that when you get it replaced you also do a transmission flush. i also would reccomend a new torque converter.

-Dave (ford dealership tech sence 2004)

  • @thevarekai007 Really, I have a 98 Sable with over 255,000 miles. The tranny and engine is fine...no problems at all. If you maintain it like you should then it will go for many miles. Oil....every 3000 miles, tranny every 30,000 miles. Problem is that most folks don't maintain like they should.

(Shop and backyard mechanic since 1982.)

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE No truer words have been written about the AX4S equipped cars. I recently was given a Mercury Sable with the AX4S trany and everything was nice and smooth up until this past summer and I fired up the air conditioning and after a few weeks, after the car got up to operating temperature, I had no ability to move the car. I came to find out about those wonderful solenoids in the valve body of the transmission, heat and the tranny not being seviced every 30k miles.

  • @dpgmuchogordo Ouch....if you get a rebuild or a replacement just remember to install a cheap in line secondary tranny cooler to work in conjunction with the factory tranny cooler. Non maintenance and heat are the enemy. Good luck.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Done! :)

  • @dpgmuchogordo Good job.

  • @thevarekai007 OBTW....just sold a owned for 5 years 97 SHO with 159,896 miles and the tranny would chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift. Tranny never been touched internally. Just regular maintenance.

  • those tauruses were known for those problems

  • thats y u have to treat taurus transmissions like ur walking on eggshells... dont floor the fucking thing

  • mine was driveable one minute and no drive or reverse the next

  • I have a 98 taurus doing the same

  • my car has 70 k and does this what broke please tell me my 4month old needs his car back and I would like to fix it if something small broke before i just yank it and replace it

  • we had the same problem and what happen finally was a main drive rod broke in the trans it cost me 1600 bucks to get it fixed

  • Is that the 24V

  • You can tell that there is no engaugement (he is not faking it) because there is NO rpm drop on the tach. when you put it in gear (the AX4S is a problematic transmission anyway) ADDED: This guy dsjamesk is a fucking idiot and knows nothing about vehicles!!! 28 Year Master Auto Technician

  • @charles81265 uh, yes there is a drop in rpm on the first shift into rev, anyone can see this. if i had this problem, i would rev the engine way past 2000 rpm just to show this is not facked.

  • HE IS NOT A FAKE, THIS IS A HUGE AND VERY REAL PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. TORQUE CONVERTER IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE PROBLEM ! BEEN A MECHANIC FOR 25 YEARS AND THIS IS A PROBLEM I SEE ALL THE TIME WITH THE FORDS....

  • i think this was facked, why? well lets see 1, engine is very warm, why is this? 2, you didnt rev it up very much, only up to 2k, probly cause u have the brakes on and didnt want the car to move 3, the big thing, i noticed a very convincing drop in idle speed when placed into rev the 1st time, and i also heard a "clunk" when u shifted into rev the 2nd time. very inconvincing video in my eyes, how low are youtubers when they fake videos

  • maybe a bad torque convertor, or the linkage under the hood may be bad.

  • maybe bad torque convertor.

  • ADD FLUID

  • Drops down the RPM's when you select a different gear, and it doesn't "free rev," you just keep putting it in Neutral. Besides the engine is warm, either you wasted a ton of gas by letting it idle or were just driving it.

    Noob.

Fake a car problem for attention, that's low.

  • my 97 taurus had a problem when u stopped and went to take off it would

"kick:" into gear sometimes almost giiving you whiplash. changing the filter and flushing the transmissions took care of most of it, although when u stopped it still would slip out then kick back in. I drove it like that for a long time then decided to get rid of it and get a 2002 taurus ses, which I drove for 3 years then ended up getting a Lincoln...

  • worn out friction plates or bands are very bad... trans repair needed...

  • @turbotaurus2000 thanks einstine!

  • Two words, transmission fluid.

  • ford tauruses have horrible tranny problems, you usually see broke ass people buy tauruses cause its cheap and they dont know any better. Those cars are good for about 60,000 miles.

  • Comment removed

  • @VerdugoCityRider We bought a 2002 Taurus SEL brand new, and it went 238,000 miles with zero major problems before it got totaled in a wreck. Proper maintenance is key for making any car last. Tauruses get a bad rap because most people don't give a shit and just drive them into the ground.

  • @MavDude your right, but they do tend to have tranny problems.

  • @VerdugoCityRider hell! i bought my 98 sable in 2000 (it had 38K) and its still running strong going on 210K. shit, my 2004 grand prix been in the shop 3 times (from rack and pinion leaking to brake problems) GM is overrated and chrysler is just JUNK...

  • Im sorry but this didnt show me shit.

  • how did u solve this problem because i have an ford escort and the same problem has .what did u change to fix it?

  • I dont knw if it's just me or maybe it really is. But for me, taurus looks like an alien...

  • did u check the fluid lol

  • i have the same car. same dam thing yours . unplug the plug at the top of the tranns. this gave me drive 1 and 2 no od. and no reverse. but i drove it home. really have not looked in to it yet. i pluged it back in and the dam thing wont move. so i unpluged it again and it took rigt off. but like i sead it only had drive 1 and 2

  • dude i had a starter problem with my taurus , yesterday i toke it off from the same car as yours from a junk yard , i pay 20 bucks .

what i want to say is that if a mechanical told you to pay 800$ or more for a transmission change , go like me to junk yard and do the same .

by the way it's not hard as you think , when i was i Europe i change it by myself to my Peugeot 406 auto

  • i forget something dude , look if transmission cables are good and connected so the transmission and the gear too . if they was , check the Clutch disk cuz he show the same symptoms if he's completely damaged

  • @youssefqazwsx my 07 automatic corrolla does the same, shakes aggressively when changing between P-R-D, and also when it changes gears, especially from 1-2, first, will driving it cause any damage? at least a 20 mins drive to the mechanic, and second, the problem is most likely simple such as fluid shortage or something right?

p.s. the yellow engine sign came on when this problem started.

  • @LeBronForTheWin well , the shaking when you change from neuter to D or R usually is a clutch disk problem in most time . for automatic transmission fluid , look underneath the hose just behind the engine head you ll see a yellow dip stick dandle, that your ATF dip

you can go to the mechanic with that shaking

NB > you have to turn the engine on , if you want to check transmission fluid . engine fluid need the opposite , he should be down ;)

  • @youssefqazwsx aight is the clutch disk problem a big one? in other words is this shit gonna cost a lot to replace?

  • @LeBronForTheWin no such a big like changing the hole transmission , a clutch disk cost vary from 45 bucks to 70 bucks , but if the mechanic tell you the problem is the clutch i recommend you to change the entire Clutch Kit , ask your mechanic for the best marque , my friend has a 08 corolla and he told me the best is Sachs , $110 .

buddy do a diagnostic test for ur cars man , for make sure is clutch first ;) , shops do that for 30 bucks

  • @youssefqazwsx yeah im getting it scanned for sure, ive known the mechanic for a while, he does it for free. Also i was googling about clutch problems and it seems that jerking could be due to oil contamination also besides worn out parts, but thanks a lot man.

  • The Ford Taurus is best known for its transmission failures. You're lucky you made it that far with that car before your tranny went. I was digging around online and found that boatloads of Taurus owners would be driving along and then all the sudden the transmission would just stop pulling. Average mileage before it went: 50-80K miles. WTG Ford.

  • Yea I rebuilt mine at around 120k miles...

  • i'm sure you have figured it out by now, but the transmission is toast. 1996-1999 Ford Taurus's have transmission problem. They usually appear between 100,000 to 120,000 miles. You (and my dad) were lucky to get it to last to 155,000. That's exactly when his wen't out too.

  • same thing with mine cuz i think i flooded it wit trans fluid i goota let it drain, hope i didn't do any damage!!!! help me out!!!

  • my 1996 taurus only has 77k miles and when it first starts off it will try to get out of first and gets stuck in neutral but when it heats up it runs like new. can anyone tell me whats wrong???

  • check the fluid, it sounds like it may have a fluid leak and your very low on fluid, When it heats up the fluid expands and may be why its doing what its doing, If it were a internal trans problem the complete opposite would be happening, Don't drive it with it doing that, You will destroy somthing! You may have rotted wires to, I had this problem with my SHO and had to splice and rig wires where the rotted ones were.

  • @JISINSANE this is the taurus G... i never see the G but i only see the GL model. I dont think the fluid has ever been changed on it since 1996

  • i have the same problem in my 92 taurus wagon there is moisture in you transmission moisture creates water droplets these droplets then run down your dipstick into your transmission fluid remove your dipstick and leave it out don't put it back instead put a ventilated cover over the dipstick hole i designed one out of door screen stapled together it breathes.

  • same happened to us the transmission went out on our 97 taurus but we got a used transmission and its still runnin good

  • No offense to the aspiring mechanic (Somborac420), but the transmission has NOTHING to do with the camshafts. The camshafts are responsible for opening and closing the valves, and are located inside of the cylinder heads in an OHC engine.

My guess is that the torque converter is toast.

  • Well like I said, I'm an aspiring mechanic so I obviously don't know very much about cars, but I will because that's what I'll be going to College for. Thank you you for correcting my statement because now I know those 2 parts have no physical connection. Please explain why you guessed the torque converter is toast. Thanks.

  • The torque converter is a pump that acts as a clutch, allowing the car to idle in gear without stalling. The torque converter has a turbine at one end that is turned by fluid pressure. For your car to accelerate, the engine has to build enough pressure in the converter to spin the turbine and start transferring power to the tranny. This is called the stall speed. Below that speed it freewheels, which is what you see in the video.

  • I'm an aspiring mechanic & it looks to me as though your tranny has lost physical connection to the cam shaft.

  • Is it out of tranny fluid?

  • Is it out of tranny fluid?

  • Are you revving it? Or is the car rising the RPM's by its self

  • Did you ever figure this out?

One thing that it could be is that your shifter-linkage cable is getting caught on something or its loose or something.

Did the transmission slip any while taking off or driving when you could get it in gear?

  • Holy crap,,,,mine does exactly the same thing.....Did u ever find out what the problem was...If u did, please tell me so I can fix mine, it's also my daily driver.

  • ok can be one of many possibles problema if you put the car in forward or reverse and not move at all ,your transsmision have not any pressure most of cases is the oil pump inside the tranny and can be fix whith tranny in the car or you have bad torque converter because the torque converter move the oil pump and if you have any warning light scan your car for possible electrical problems sush a faulty tranny solenoid...

  • I'm having a small issue with my 05 Sable.... sometimes when I put it in Reverse it doesn't go in reverse.... it usually happens if I put it in Reverse the first time it goes in, but if I put it in drive neutral or park, and put it back in reverse, it wont engage... sometimes it will though sometimes it wont.... could it be either the shift linkage or the electronics?

  • tauruses are known for tranny problems. my dad got a 96 taurus with a 3.0L V6 thinking nothing would go wrong. sorry for your problems :(

  • Check the shift cable first. At least the engine runs.

  • at least the engine runs. ahaha look at my videos my friend taurus blown transmission + blowing the motor up( indestructible lmao)

and quada. your tranny is dead loll

  • yeah like chevy is ant better.had my share of gms same thing.

  • pumps shot

  • My dad had an old car that would roll in any gear except neutral, but that was only if the car was off. With the engine running, the car would stay put in any gear.

  • i read that on these cars you can do quite a bit of service to the trans w/o taking it out of the car. I read you can change the solenoids and valve body by taking the side cover and pan off.

  • lol my dad tried that, one of those dams gears chipped and spread metal bits all over the tranny, had to replace the tranny and flush the radiator

  • Same thing happend to mine. the trans was junk i just went to a junk yard and got a used one and if your lucky you got a good one, i was lucky mine is good.

  • With 155,000 miles on it the transmission probably just wore out. Personally if that were my car, I would scrap it and buy another one because you got your money's worth out of it...the car lasted 10 years and 155,000 miles, it's not like it went boom at only 40k!

  • Hi,

Im having exactly the same problem with my 98 Taurus.

Did you mange to figure out what was the problem and how to fix it?

Thank you in advance for your time.

    Take care,

    Ronni

  • these cars have a problem with the tranny, same with the contour, and escort... you either get a good tranny or you dont is what they say... my contour left my dad in the middle of nowhere, and today we took the tranny out, we'll be putting one we got from a junker as the week goes by...

  • is it hard to replace the tranny?

  • you have to get it in the air, take off both of the front tires, unscrew the axles, get them off the wheel bearing, unhook everything from the tranny, unscrew the flywheel from the torque converter, unbolt all (i think 12) screws around the tranny, remove the two engine mounts that are on the tranny, then remove all 4 bolts that hold the chassis to the body, then lower the chassis along with the tranny, then the tranny goes out the drivers side if the car is up high enough :P

  • Jonyrock, you are 100% correct plus the fact that it is a huge job not for the mechanically challenged. I saw the amount of work the mechanic went through to get the tranny out I got tired just looking at him. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with everyone. Peace!

  • no problem, my car's already on all 4's and the tranny we got works great, but it's really rewarding when you start it up for the first time after having taken it apart and back together :P

  • fuck that lol i would buy new car shit lol

  • well, arent you lazy..... its obvious you've never worked on a car b4, there's no greater feeling than seeing after all the effort and time you've put into it, that it starts right up and runs :)

  • @jonyrock im not lazy man i worked on cars before but i dont do trannys there too hard and there alot of money to fix and yes i know that feeling i put in new exhaust systems in with my father

  • planetary gear maybe, my brother sold my friend his SHO and the tranny wouldnt go in any gear.

he took it the tranny shop which had 3 already in the lot, his planetary gear went out.

  • those cars are so round and bubbly.

  • mine started doing that so i winded on it and it stopped. kind of random

  • but it would have been more helpful if you had talked about it some..

  • You are dumb as fuck. What do you need to know more? Its pretty self explanatory!

  • how can we really tell it is not shifting into any gear? your not explaing anything and how do we know if ur not just holdin down the brake while u rev it? u need to have a cam man other then ur self so you can explain and me get a wider view on the car and what its doing.

  • One of the dumbest comments I have heard for 2 reasons...

1: Why would I fake a problem with my vehicle

2: You cannot rev a vehicle in gear with the brake down. It would just bog and not want to rev....

But thanks for your ignorance :P

  • my car can rev in gear with the brake down. it moves ur car a little bit but it can stay still for the most part and it does not bog down.

  • You cannot rev it that freely when the brake is held down and its in gear. also its pretty obvious that the car did not move

  • kay whatever.. obviously the problem is he puts it in gear and it doesn't do anything.. The answer to your problem is you need a new tranny... something everybody with a taurus will have to do eventually

  • @baddmaddogg if you can do that in your car youve got some serious torque converter problems.

  • @adammdamann I never really revved it up alot. Lol. It was always just a tad bit to keep it from stalling .. it had some problems. and when it would start to stall when I was at a red light I would give it a tiny bit of gas and thats what I was talking about in that post. Sorry, I really didn't give any more information.

  • @baddmaddogg its all good youre probly just buzzed man lol

  • @Quada03 you can rev a vehicle with the brake on..just saying

  • @Quada03 i agree with badmaddog, its simple to fake it, and it would to want to rev, if done it thousands of times

  • Comment removed

  • @baddmaddogg I have a 2003 taurus and mine did the exact same thing. It was the torque converter splines that were stripped. Replace the torque it will work perfect.

  • Remove the ford logo!!

  • LOL!.

  • if its ur transmission...u can always go to the junk yard and get one off a recked tarus...should work fine after it is installed...

  • my dads car did this, turned out it didnt have enough atf in it try adding some

  • I drove a black '98 taurus for a year... great motor, horrible transmission.

  • my borther inlaw is a transmission mechanic and he has replaced the transmission in these a million times.

  • Shifting problems at one point , then normal shifting at other times is a direct indicator of a faulty shift solenoid. Have it replaced and you will be ok.

  • normal ford vehicle

  • "normal" for any vehicle 11 years old.

jeez enough with ford-bashing.. atleast they didnt take bailout money like gm and chrysler did

  • No ford stole enough of peoples money to not have to take the money. Buy two new fords a year.

  • township bought 4 last year and no problems responding to emergencies.. in addition to the crown vic's comin in

  • @Tr2u1ck. and GM paid it all back with full intrest. and ford should have when they had the chance. now they need it... id love to see ford go under and quit completly.

  • @Tr2u1ck actually its normal for any ford taurus. worst transmissions ever in those things. both of our cars are 13 years old and shift perfectly, every time. oh wait, did i mention they were both chrysler's?

  • @sideburns2009 you didnt mention the: milage, driving environment, proper maintenance.. oh and did I mention the lack of taxpayer dollars needed by Ford..?

  • @Tr2u1ck yes, but while ford didn't get a government loan, they still took out quite a big loan and are still in just as much debt as the other 2, just not a debt to the gov't. look it up

  • @sideburns2009 Just did a bit of looking up.. Ford took nothing in the 2008 bailout.. but a page said that if it wasn't for the bailout of GM and Chrysler, we would have lost all 3.

Another page said Ford was actually "offered" a loan from the Federal Reserve (Ford Credit) in 2008..

Yes Ford has debt but not much.. Ford will "have zero debt by 2011" (published by Reuters on Oct. 2, 2010). When was this alleged Ford bailout?

  • @Tr2u1ck You completely missed what I said. Ford didn't take government bailout loan money, but they were in just as much trouble. They took a private loan and are in just as much debt as the other 2, just not in debt to the government. Can't put it any clearer than that.

  • My transmission in my 98 taurus just went out and i had to pay $2,200 for a new one

  • omg a 98 taurus isn't even worth 2200

  • i agree.. but it depends on the miles and condition.. some lot sold a 97 taurus for 3500$

  • you know what's the problem with the fords, especially the taurus. ford likes to cut edges especially on this cars.. one of the most common problems with fords is the brake lines, they corroded fast as ever.. i have seen 8 yrs old fords with corroded lines, because they do not use the steel coated brake lines.. i had to do mines on my 97 taurus and my civic is a 95 and the lines are still good.. also they use plastic components in the taurus trans.

  • I hope they don't use the same lines on the 1993 Escort...

  • your tarus caught the chrysler virus lol

  • go suk a cock

  • fords are garbage

  • It has to be the Tranny Filter. It did that on my 99 Mercury Sable and right when i replaced it, it was alive again. I was soo happy. But then about 2 months, the damn thing went out. Started slipping, then stop slipping then reverse went out. WIerd

  • i had the same prob with my 03. i replaced my fluid and it cured it.

  • ChryslerVans

Still better than any 1998 Chrysler product. At least it starts, won't be able to say the same thing about a Chrysler. Chrysler's are the worst in quality. Good luck sticking with your soon be owned by the Chinese Chrysler Corp.

  • I know wht the problem is, its proboley your torque converter splines stripped that spins the pump, so when the torque converter spins its not turning the pupm which does not pump any fluid to the tranny.

  • Your name has Chrysler in it, and you insult Ford....???

  • i have same problem you do i have 1996 ford tarus is dosent reversie it

  • As someone else stated, it could be the linkage. I had a similar problem with my '97 Taurus. The gear selector would be in park, but the car would actually stay in reverse or neutral and would roll backward if I didn't put the E-Brake on every time I "parked." Took it to my mechanic and told them to check the linkage, they fixed it for $30.00 and she's perfectly fine now. From what I hear, this generation of Taurus has tranny problems that Ford should have recalled, but never did.

  • Hi, wondering if you fix the problem with your taurus..having the exact same problem with mine. No movement in any gear, no noise, oil level fine no leaks. Mine gave out on the hiway doing 100kmph..just like someone shifted it into neutral. Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks

  • your trans is shot

  • Connect a OBDII Scaner, you should be able to get codes that may guide you to the problem.

change your Solenoids, all 5 of them, they are ussaully about 26usd and chage the trans fluid too. The expensive part is replacing them.

  • Did you try any of the other forward gears? In our Mercury Villager (same tranny), the linkage got so out of adjustment that the indicator would show it was in a certain gear when in reality it was in another...

  • Get rid of it and don't buy another Ford! There's your solution.

  • Don't you suppose it's a 1-in-50,000 defect?

  • Now ya tell me

  • Or a bad pump. Forgot to mention that in the comment below.

  • I'm not a Ford transmission expert, I'm just now getting into the transmission business, but I'm wondering, have you checked the line pressure while it's actin stupid? From what I'm reading, if it dosen't shift into any gear at all, I wanna think low line pressure, or a pressure relief valve stuck open.

  • Could it be the clutch bands or a bad pump?

  • taurus's are junk except for the sho's

  • Hate to sound stupid but you can hear the transmission attempt to change gears when he moves the column shifter. Now the stupid question... Did you check and confirm proper level of transmission fluid? Also are you using the correct fluid type for your transmission?

  • Did you ever fix this? I would try changing the valve body on the tranny, mine did this a few months before it completely screwed itself over (see my video), replacing that helped a ton.

  • It's that kind of problem that I have with my 1995 Ford Probe 4cyl w/automatic transaxle. They said that it could be the neutral safety switch (or Park/neutral safety switch)
