oh i see, im just making fishing weights here and I just scrape off the slag with an old spoon while the lead is still in the pot to remove the impurities
i wouldnt, because of the high water content, it may cause a steam explosion when the molten lead is poured in, use greensand its cheap and safe and proven
You can bake gypsum powder in an oven, most lumber yards carry gypsum in 60-100lbs bags, you bake out the moisture (if you are in a humid area) then you can lightly mist (very fine light mist) it on a tarp then mix well, then pack into a form box, press part, there ya go.
great video, a few q's though, is there any reason you mounted it on a lawnmower chassis? and would you recommend a gas or charcoal furnace for someone who wants to start (me)
I mounted it on a lawnmower chassis because it makes it easier to move around and faster to setup. I used charcoal to start with, but its a pain to keep adding charcoal because it burns away fast (depending on what temp. you're heating to and the amount of metal you're melting). Using propane isn't cheep though because the gas regulator costs alot, so it depends on how far you want to go and your budget
Got a scrapyard nearby? Pull them off scrap car wheels with pliers. Or try builders merchants (lead flashing for house windows, but not cheap!) Just remember that old dirty lead gives off more damgerous fumes, if possible. Ensure plenty of ventilation, preferably outside.
When I was melting the car weights, some have rubber attached to them, so i would chuck them in and walk away for ~5min while it melted and burned off, but using respiratory equipment is best
i like your video but i have one quesion for when you put the car weights in that had rubber what kind of a result did you get was it the same as the car weights with no rubber
yea its the same lead alloy, what i didnt show in the video is that once the metal melts, the rubber/steel clip and other debris float on the top so you can just get an old spoon and scoop it out leaving clean lead alloy behind.
watching melting lead videos are so cool check out my lead melting videos

You need flux to bring dross to the top,,or 25yrs of bullet casting has been wrong
1bad65truck 2 years ago
thats a little gnarly for just lead.. air induced toch can kick that up well over aluminum melting point LOL
akaLops444 2 years ago
Did you use wax for flux?
marshallspikebanana 2 years ago
no flux needed, lead doesn't oxidize by any appreciable amount while molten. Flux is needed when soldering though.
sulliee101 2 years ago
No, I mean to purify the lead. I use candle wax for when I melt lead to make shotgun slugs...
