  • What's amazing is all of those dismissals were lbw, bowled, caught behind the wicket. The widest of which was gully. No mistimed pull shots or caught on the boundary or caught at midoff. Just clean 'bowlers' dismissals. Showed why Curtley was so good/great. Just hit good areas all the time. Beast.

  • Eh....best vid on utubez?

  • Ambrose the Gr8.......Miss ya buddy.

  • what video is the west indies away 98 series on ?

  • Oops, I cannot read, I meant 17 times :)

  • I always knew Ambrose got Atherton out a lot, but 19 times?! Thanks for the awesome video.

  • the one guy who disliked this video should be mike ATHERTON ..

  • most wkts bowled, lbw or caught by keeer/slips...all real pace bowler wkts...what a great bowler he was!!!

  • all 17 were real paceman wickets: lbw, bowled and caught behind square. signs of high quality fast bowling.

  • Awesome Job on collecting the videos and putting them together. Thanks

  • @shyamumich You are welcome man, it was fun!!!!!!

  • Hi do you have any footage of graeme hick's first test series against the west indies? Apparently ambrose softened him up?

  • C & C owned him, didn't they? 17 dismissale each...Seriously, WTF?

  • more ambrose vids pllllllleeeeeeaaaaaasssseeee

  • On Ambrose's pace, he is clearly a fair bit quicker in the footage from 1991 and 1993-1994; not express pace, but with his heigh, plenty quick enough (I'd guess that he's in the upper 80s MPH). I think he had a shoulder injury in 1994-5, and when the West Indies played Australia in 1995 he was down on pace. I think he probably never got up to the pace of his earlier years, and was consequently not as destructive in the second half of his career.

  • @vindaisatossermini Yeah thats wat i meant

  • Fantastic video! Thanks for taking the effort to compile these dismissals.

  • Amazing, all but one out to defensive strokes.

    Thanks a lot for uploading.

  • Athers so unlucky he had 2 face so many great fast bowlers of 1990s. and that 2 on those seaming english or deadly west indies pitches

  • is it just me or is michael atherton alot of peoples bunny??

  • WOW WAS ATHERS EVERYBODY'S BUNNY!!!!!

  • Brilliant stuff. Atherton was pretty unlucky to have to face McGrath, Ambrose, and Walsh!

  • Atherton last dismissal the speed gun said 84 mph and consensus knowledge was that Ambrose at that time in his career lost a lot of pace....

  • @abner5640 Yeah but Ambrose was never seriously fast, his asset was his height, when he slowed down his pace wasnt threatening, but his accuracy and general plans for batsmen were top class. 84mph, thats not all that quick anyway, isnt 90mph just over 140k's? Ambrose never went near 150ks even at his peak.

  • @robelinda2

90 mph is 145 kph. Anyway, what do you think was Ambrose speed at his peak? Of the late 80's/early 90's version I've seen of him, I'd say he was pretty damn fast. Pretty close to 90 mph.

  • @SPMJ Probably 145 at best, his crazy height and bounce made him awkward, rather than sheer pace. When he was bowling in tandem with Patrick Patterson or Ian Bishop you could see the speed difference. Ambrose more deadly though by miles!

  • @robelinda2: Very true indeed Rob. Ambrose in general displayed more aggression, especially against Australians and English batsmen so I think people thought he was equally aggressive in his speeds. However, I think Courtney Walsh was faster than him and also nastier in terms of bouncers. I was comparing the two videos of Ambrose-Walsh vs Atherton and it seemed that Walsh preferred bouncing Atherton and Ambrose pitched it up and got it to move off the seam with bounce!

  • @ritadhishankar Agree, Walsh was the bouncer man for sure, but was equally effective with his slanting off cutters, but got more caught behinds. Ambrose seemed to go for killer bouncers and lbw's with his off cutter. Neither swung the ball at all really, Ambrose maybe did occasionally, but was more a cutter. DAMN GOOD BOWLERS!!!!!

  • @robelinda2: Yes. In the test prior to the one where England were knocked out for 46, Walsh bowled a terrifying spell to Atherton and I think the England coach said later that the English top order were simply too scared to go on the front foot after that and thereby got caught on the crease at Port of Spain. Most of the wickets for that matter were bowled or lbw.

  • @robelinda2 you have got to be kidding.... you make it sound like you timed him at every occasions.. I heard from many commentators that he was easy 90 miles bowler.... you could tell too,

  • @abner5640 what makes this fascinating viewing is how low the 4th innings totals were that Curtly and Courtney had to defend. It make early strikes a necessity.

As for pace, yeah post-1995 he was slower... rarely would he "fire it up".... that being said, he could hit 90-92mph at peak I reckon... the difficulty with judging his pace was that he came from the Andy Roberts school of having a fast-er ball... so he surprised you with the uptick in pace... never needed to sustain it.

  • @abner5640

He was quick at the start of his career and gradually slowed his pace down. He probably bowled in the mid 140's. But what made him was his almost unerring accuracy and bounce. On top of that, he could move it off the seam in both directions. Some spells of his were almost unplayable - it was all a matter of survival for the batters, forget about runs. I don't think I've seen another bowler have as many spells like that.

  • best & most intimidating fast bowler ever.

  • Atherton 200th and Atherton 400th wicket! What are the chances?

  • Thank you very much Rob, that was great. Are you aware that in the last two days, we've all seen 30.7% of Mr Atherton's dismissals in test cricket? I've almost forgotten what he looked like when he wasn't getting out! Poor fellow, having to face some great bowling.

  • @robertosteiner I know, poor bastard!!! Massive respect for Mike Atherton, these videos might show him getting out but he was tough as nails, and I LOVED the full battles between him and the fast bowlers, over afetr over, compelling viewing. Atherton's average might be awesome but I dont give a shit, as an opener he wasnt the greatest but I really liked his batting, especially on the 94 tour to WI, he just didnt back down, even though he was tormented by the WI bowlers.

  • @robelinda2 Oh, I concur. Long may he be remembered! And to add to that, he's such a lovely character, and I think, and excellent writer and commentator. :)

  • @robertosteiner Agree, bloody excellent commentator, and I love his book too.

  • Was Atherton every bowlers bunny?

  • Another superb video robelinda2 -poor Athers having to face all these guys! Got any more Ambrose-what a bowler!

  • THANK YOU!! Curtly is my favourite bowler bar none. Great to see him, and Courtney in your other vid, torment Athers throughout their respective careers. Cheers.
