Beautifully judged short-shifting was the key to this pole-position. Exit traction was always going to be there and you can then concentrate on the perfect exit-line.
If you can understand this - then it's just another insight into the vast arsenal of driving techniques this great man could bring to the table.
The arm-wave is simple courtesy to the second-car on the straight. Driving on the dirty part of the track to let him through for what the marshalls flagged as another flying-lap.
@petecockcroft "the vast arsenal of driving techniques this great man could bring to the table."
Excellent comment - for it is so true - Senna was a savant of race-car driving - not just a genius - on a totally different plane to all others, ever. He saw extra dimensions in the art and explored them to the limit. He could do the impossible.
It's not strictly true to to say "no electronics" with regards to this video.
The engines were electronically fuel injected, the Ferrari of 1990 had a paddle shift gearbox and I think some teams (certainly Lotus) at this time had active suspension.
This was the beginning of the transition to the artificial, commercially driven, high technology dominated era of Formula 1.
I wish people would stop banging on about how today's F1 drivers aren't as skilled as those from the 80s. A modern grand prix car is if anything probably harder to drive than older cars there just safer. I've been a fan of formula one since the early 80s so have seen them all. In the 80s the cars had huge mechanical grip from massive and very early 80s ground effect then in the early 90s ABS, active suspension ect. Today's cars rely mainly on aerodynamics they have no driver aids and tyres that
@edd55r Modern racing cars have less power and torque, less grip,Manual gearboxs,No traction control, no electronics. The cars were more dangerous in an accident, the track safety and pit safety was worse back then. I mean i am not saying that modern F1
@edd55r Modern racing cars have less power and torque, less grip,Manual gearboxs,No traction control, no electronics. The cars were more dangerous in an accident, the track safety and pit safety was worse back then. I mean i am not saying that modern F1 drivers are bad. Also Ground effects were largely banned from Formula One in the early 1980s ABS was banned in 1993 , along with many other driving aids, like traction control, launch control, active suspension and so on.
@edd55r ok, the modern cars are safer. and there is no traction controle and so on, but the modern cars got perfect engines, perfekt aerodynamics... everything on this cars is perfekt. the old cars - lets say the turbocharged: the engines where just monsters. the power kicks in at one moment and the grip wasn't besser, otherwise they would have been faster through corners, which they wasn't. its just a face that modern F1 cars are easier to drive. every f1 driver of nowdays sais this ;)
just that one gear shift at 1:20 says it all, i mean can u imagine driving a 1200HP monster with a very low aero set up , and negotiating that first chicane with just one hand on the steering wheel, while the other is dealing with the gear lever.
Senna, Stweard, Ickxx, Hill...man, you can't touch those guys. Don't get me wrong, modern F1 cars are still a hand full. But back in the day--whew! I raise a glass to those still with us and I pour some drops for the one who are not.
Agree! I have posted some similar comments trying to get people to think: was it really That much better "back then" and is All modern F1 and drivers really just crap?!
I think every era in F1 has their own charm, but for some people nostalgia completely suppresses common sense!
We just had 6 great seasons back to back (2005-2010), and I can think of many things in F1 that is harder today than 25 years ago!..but again it's not an era competition!
I agree that having manual gearbox rock though. But in exchange, drivers now have watch for tons of buttons in the steering wheel. F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport and that's why cars have evolved to what they're today.
@RedhotIta1 where did he register that top speed in 1982? in 1983 fastest at monza was 312km/h with piquet and 1986 was 351,2 km/h berger fastest both with bmw power. 1987 was piquet again fastest with 352km/h honda this time. All turbo. cheers
@RedhotIta1 it was a test i think in 1982 with the ferrari 126CK with no wings where he raced also an airplane maybe there they caught that speed. cheers
Lewis Hamilton driving one of the Mp4 88 Mclaren cars recently. FINALLY a driver of today could get a sense of what REAL F.1 driving was. Ayrton was the best ....end of.
These v8s nowadays cannot even compete with the sounds of these v12s! And worse is to follow, in 2013 they're gonna change to 1.6L 4-cylinder engines, that's gonna be the nail in the coffin.
@cloughers nelsol piquet won the 1983 title with a 1.5 litre turbo 4 in line BMW engine, not 1.6 V4. In the 80's in formula 1 you could use a normal aspirated 3 litre o 1.5 litre turbo, no limits regarding the number of clilynders.
@cheekypigeon If you were working for McLaren, one would assume you would know a little about their cars. How come you were mentioning the MP4/4 in the comment section of this video? Did McLaren use some clever tactics with using a 2 year old car for Monza? Doesn't make much sense.
@geds7 oh so I'm guessing todays F1 is crap then. you do know today's f1 cars have no traction control, no electronics and a semi automatic gear box. in fact if anything the cars in 1990 were much more sphisticated electronically, ferrari began using a semi auto gearbox and most cars even had active suspension, the mother of all driving aids. No doubt this was a good era for f1 but don't let on that todays is crap.
@geds7 Sorry dude.... As far as driver involvement goes, the only difference between this gearbox and the current gearboxes is the location of the shifter! And that car has way more electronics on it, even back then, than you could get your mind around!
You want no electronics and a real manual gearbox? That's what NASCAR is all about.
@arhavlisj Agreed mate - as a youngster racing karts back in these days - we lived for these in-car camera laps with the great Senna - because we KNEW we were watching perfection in action - there was simply no better example of how to do it perfectly.

look at any of the onboard vids from monaco back in the day..
i rekon' they drive at least half the lap one handed, the other is constantly reaching for the gear lever every few seconds.
to do that for ~90minutes, man thats some phsyical strength and stamina.
