The words to Es ist ein rose entsprungegen say (approximately) that a rose (ie a rosebush) has sprung forth from the root of Jesse (father of King David) just as the prophet Isaiah had said. From the rose has grown a bud, a liitle child, without spoiling the perfection of the rose. This child is created by the word of God and has come to overthrow darkeness, sin and death.
It's not the same. A Great and Mighty Wonder is 1,000 years older. It was used by St Germanicus to teach the pagan tribes Christianity. Es Ist Ein Ros Enstrpungen was written to the tune of "Wonder" in the 17th century by Praetorious
This arrangement of A Great and Mighty Wonder is beautiful. Does anyone know of a recording (apart from this one--i.e., CD or mp3) of this setting?

@danburns79 I have a two disc set of King's College Choir doing this song. I believe the title of the CD is "Noel"

sounds like Er ist ein rose entsprungen...I think that's how it's written. Is it essentially the same tune with different words?
