Draken is DRAGON= we all know what a dragon is, a formidible flying terror. Grippen is Griffin = a lionlike creature or gargoyle that flys and is a predator of man, aka another formidible flying terror.

Viggen is Thunder or thunder maker or thunderbolt and is associated with THOR once more a formidible being from the sky. SAAB is on a pattern here wouldnt you say.

@kevingthompson13 well since the word drake also means dragon you can always keep thinking of it as one, who cares what the manufacturers intended. Even though i personally like the kite version since it looks like one. I admitt that the name is a bit tame and dull

@eilewot In this case it only means "kite" in vernacular and not its actual meaning. Now as for SAAB they probably thought that was a cool thing and most likely used that in the marketing scheme. That way you have a completely everday non harmful item in one psychology and a terrifying creature from out of the sky in another pyschology. OR you might say: THE KIND/FRIENDLY DRAGON. As if there was such a thing, kinda like "officer friendly". Where are any of those these days? Its all marketing.

@dima78350 lol jas 39 is an awesome plane. It may not look ass cool as draken, but its aerial design makes it an awesome maneuverable aircraft. Its 1 of the best fighters in the whole world. During six flag (an dogfight training in usa) 9 griffins shot down twice as many american fighters without loosing even 1 plane.

But i totally agree that draken is soooo much better looking :)

O'boy This is "the" aeroplane that defended me, my little sister and my parents and everyone in sweden when I grow up- The swedish airforce had almost 600 of these beauties in the air during the sixties and the early seventies. This is star wars for me.. Almost every day when I was a small boy these "dragons" passed over our house, sometimes to fast, faster than sound, making the windows almost crash. My mother went crazy everytime. Ohh man just look at that profile.. Star Wars,,

The swedish Draken was built as a interceptor to catch fast high-flying bombers and was not intended to carry nukes or attack Moscow...

The Lansen was designed to carry nukes and chems, plus that Saab were working on the A36, which was supposed to be a true nuclear bomber, with an internal weapons compartment.

@ballen900 The J35 Draken was the first supersonic aircraft in Europe. As for Mach 2, that's debatable, given the J35A didn't exceed Mach 1.2, and it wasn't until the J35D the Draken reached Mach 2+. When it comes to nuclear bombing, that's nonsense. The Draken was never intented for nuclear payloads. The delta winged SAAB A36 was designed for long range nuclear bombings though, but never got passed the early design stage before the development of a swedish nuclear bomb was cancelled.

@ballen900 I´`m sorry but you´re wrong! Draken was built as a interceptor for interception of high attitude bombers over Sweden during the Cold War. There was no "attack/bombing" version ever built of Draken! // 1 Div, F21 Luleå AFB (Sweden)
