The real reason Kittan's death was so Epic was just because for most of the series he was just a side character. And then like he just became awesome in 2 mins flat and it was like wow he really was a cool character afterall. Whereas Kamina was Epic from the beginning and was a main character.

And at the first explosion you really think he is dead, with an awful scream that gave me chills.

And suddenly reapears with a giga drill breaker.

This was a sacrifice dead, Kamina was more like a battlefield dead.

It wasn't entirely voluntary. As stated in Lagann-Hen, Kittan's gunman was the only one to whitstand the outside pressure, so it was Kittan or nobody. He just accepted that. Also, why do his fans always need to belittle Kamina's death somehow to glorify Kittan? Kamina gained enough will power to practicaly raise from the death to lead and inspire his people to victory. That's impressive enough. To much martylogy lovin' going around.

That description fitts Kamina's death perfectly, btw.

Ponder on this: Even if Kittan hadn't kissed Yoko he'd still die. If he kissed Yoko and came back- no one'd give a shit about him and there would be no DRAMA. If he neither kissed her nor sacrificed- then what's the use? I can't also see Yoko being 'in love' at all, there's no spark like with Kamina- she acts more like his mom. That's not how love works, you can't make the girl love you by pressing your lips to hers by force and make her owe you, no matter how good it looks on screen...

It's one of those series where you can just sit back and enjoy it, and it's a good one of those at that. This is one of those series where the plot, plot holes and lack of logic don't matter, because it compensates for that in it's entertainment.

Similarly it took hundreds of years for Lord Genome to develop it in both his eyes. Who knows what will happen if Kittan had lived?
