I love this movie so much. Its amazing how talented Emmy Rossum is. i was watching her in a bunch of interviews with the cast over on the snapsnao channel and she just comes across so mature.
Imagine you're sitting in the theatre and you can hear the guy from the beginning say "Lot 666 then... a chandelier in pieces..." He goes on... "Maybe we frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination... gentlemen?" And then the chandelier gets uncovered, raises above your head and this epic overture starts... I always get goose pimples...
Probably one of the best moments in my whole life.
(Well, there weren't any other great moments in my life - I'm just 14 years old)
The first time I heard this, I was watching it as an in-flight movie. The highest the earphones went up to was still barely high enough for me to hear, so I was kind of zoning out during the auction. Then this overture came in, ear-blastingly high and completely epic. Ever since, I've turned the volume up several notches when the overture starts, because that is the proper way to blow your mind with this piece. I've watched it over 20 times and still love it.
@GermanStel not at all, actually Webber composed the song in wich this is based: it is the ending of "Close every door", wich he composed 2 years before Pink Floyd came out with that song (listen to it closely). If it were something, then Pink Floyd copied Webber.
Anyway, I respect pink floyd but seriously, daring to even compare the musical genius of Webber to pink floyd and implying he needs to copy them is just insulting. Even one of those pink floyd guys found the sole idea idiotic.
Prof. Virgínia... É simplesmente épico você querer que a gente se inspire no cenário de Fantasma da Ópera pra fazer um palco de formatura de medicina.. :P
I love this number. It's just so damn impressive and awe inspiring. I wonder what this would sound like with something like the organ of the Sydney Opera House, all stops out.
I just listened to both songs, Phantom of the Opera and the Pink Floyd song. Really, the only similarity I heard was the set of scales going up and down. That was it. You really want to call that plagiarism? Both songs are absolutely fantastic and I believe both songs are quite unique and apart from each other.
@KerryEllisFannn I agree. My mom and I went to see it in Detroit Michigan and it was an amazing show. I own an actual Phantom Of The Opera's Phantom mask. I hope it comes back to Toronto, Ontario, Canada because it is the best place to see it.
I watched the movies like 20 times before I saw the play, and I memorized most of the words of the movie.
When I saw the play, I knew almost all the words to it! It was weird, I thought they'd be more to play. The only thing that there was more of was that one Verse in Phantom of the Opera... And I guess the mini song "Your hand at the level of your eyes" was just in the movie... So so so strange.
i dont mean to criticize, and im not even sure if im right, but im pretty sure AMV standsa for anime music video. at least, those are the only ones ive seen that particular achronyme used, and this is certainly not anime. again, im not entrely sure
That's right, it's popular musical theatre. There's a difference. The only real reason the word "opera" is in the title is because it's a story which takes place at the Paris Opera House.
On a side note: this is a good clip, but I must admit, I much prefer the original score for the overture without all the added orchestrations at the end that they used in the movie. The original opening chords are also MUCH more powerful and bassey which is how it should be. Cheers
I agree with Dridler00. For example, I went to see Wall-E with my best friend, and I HATED it! Yet it was rated as the best in America. That sucked hardcore!
Better? You can't compare the film with the musical!
I'm from Germany and watched it during a class trip. After returning home I watched the German version of the film - it seemed as absolute crap to me (maybe due to the really bad synchronisation). I think the English version of the film is better than the German one, but the musical in London is still much better.
I used to be scared of this song (the whole Phantom idea to be honest lol) but now I think its beautiful. my favourite song from it is a tossup between this, "Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You" (that last one is probably the best if not this)

you need a copyright to plagiarize something.
and since you can't copyright a musical scale it isn't ripping off of anything.
otherwise I would have to pay someone royalties to practice scales in my backyard.

Maybe, in your culture, the purpose of a film is to make money.
In that circumstance, the film that grosses high at the box office is a *good one*.
In many other cultures of the world, acting and production are considered as forms of art.
Is this an such alien concept, to one so subsumed in the "culture" of capital?
