WE ARE the deaf persons, only Beethoven's ears was not working...
If human beings really heard, listened and accepted this message (and all those great musicians message of love), we won't be living in such **#@!+$" world!
Hitler was used to force people to play Beethoven 9th for his birthday, what was he hearing? What did he do with the message?
What blows my mind is that we are genuinely overwhelmed by the power and passion of music like this even though we live in a society of constant visual and auditory over stimulation. If this song impacts us this much... imagine how people must have felt hearing this for the first time nearly 200 years ago when music, art, and theater were all the stimuli they had. I would give anything to experience it like they must have.
But, I really wanted the trumpets and horns to be BLASTING. They should hold their trumpets and horns UP at the end. And cymbals: SMASH them, like you would at the end of the Tchaikovksy 4th sym.
Just a life-long classical music critic who has heard the 9th sym so many times
that I feel I have earned the right to be cool and detached.
Ma perchè non trovo mai qualche commento in lingua italiana riguardo questa musica? C'è qualche italiano che ascolta questi brani? Grazie a chi mi risponderà.
wow.... kind of a lukewarm audience response to a monster performance full of energy, life, vitality, spirit, drive and balls. i'd be peeing my pants if i had been there...!!! awesome post!!!!
With all due respect to everyone of you. Call it what you may, belive what you must and think what most reflects your opinion. Just enjoy, and contain within yourselves unnecesary speech, for there is no need for words.
god himslef brought down the notes for this, beethoven tore them up and wrewriten it, and told god he had no talent. this is a timeless masterpiece of a mastermind.
so many emotions are set free while listening to this epic of german musik.
god is my witness, i love my country. may god bless us again with such a composer, i think the whole world needs it.
god do ur stuff dude, now its time to show of what u can do again
Anyone know what the lyrics of the part from 7:45 to the end mean? Curious....just because I fell in love with this part thanks to Clockwork Orange (it's in the final scene) And were the final lyrics Beethoven's, or Schiller's? *curious*
@raakone Be embraced, you millions! This kiss for the whole world! Brothers, beyond the star-canopy Must a loving Father dwell. Be embraced, This kiss for the whole world! Joy, beautiful spark of divinity, Daughter of Elysium, Joy, beautiful spark of divinity Spark of Divinity! They are Schiller's words, Beethoven only wrote the first lines, to introduct precisely the poem of Schiller.
The Ode to Joy from the 9th Symphony always makes me emotional, sometimes to the point of tears. We have such potential. We are children of God or Gods, literally or figuratively, and universal brotherhood should be our lot, yet we forget and fall and fail, again and again in this regard. Thank you Herr Beethoven for reminding us of this, and for giving us a taste of "immortal joy".
@Herm7es thanks for reintroducing me to the word 'supernal'. really. but doesn't 'supernal' imply an aesthetic quality that can only be reduced by supplying 'gorgeous'?
I cannot believe that I've never heard of this magnificent conductor. Based on his interpretation of this Symphony, I would rank him among the giants. And without this 9th Symphony, there would not be a Verdi, or Mahler or anyone else with this innovative musical form. Beethoven was indeed kissed by God!
BRAVO! Thanks for your generous sharing. I love to see how excited Mr. Chailly is as he sings and conducts at the same time in the finale. That is a real sense of JOY!! The overall performance is just comparable with Karajan's 1968 version. While Karajan brought out the holiness, Chailly releases the joy within the Symphony 9.
Good performance, wonderful orchestra, hideous dated venue, why don't they rebuild the old Gewandhaus to the original designs, one of the greatest concert halls ever with the finest acoustics similar to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
Great to see the chorus singing from memory. Thoroughly approve of this. It isrelatively easy to commit hours of performanc to memory and always give more immediacy when you perform this way. Congratulations.
This is just a godlike piece of music... I am incredibly lucky to be one of the few people being in the audience this very evening and see this LIVE...!! I was not able to hold back my tears of joy and so I am again by watching this video now. Riccardo Chailly is such a great character and Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig can be proud to call him their conductor!
Hehe, some of their faces look funny when they sing. I feel immature now, with that comment I probably completely ruined whatever cultured veneer listening to classical music would have given me. :P Ah well, it's nice music.
@AbsotivelyNothingful This heavenly music and beautiful melody is evenly nothing for you. You can make surely your favourite music in YouTube probably easily.
Alles so grandios und genial gestaltet und so fulminant, so kann das Leben wunderschön sein. der Herr Chailly hat wunderbar dirigiert und der Chor war von aller feinste. Besten Dank an Senior (ssiroe) aus Italien für die uploading.
