  • now available on gog for a small fee, gotta love being able to stram games

  • 1:05 Frieddie Wong

  • 1998... Pre-ordered this game from Electronics Boutique, played it on my Windows 98, 15" CRT, AMD K6-2, Quantum3D Raven 16MB system. Epic then and now. Everyone should go to "Hard dash Light dot Net" get the mod and play it again with modern graphics!

  • so

  • my best game

  • "The Mauler is in a direct impact course for the Galitay!!!!" Thumbs up if you remember that awesome mission.

  • how is it that PC gaming has barely evolved past this point?

  • Oh man, this still sends shivers down my spine every time I see it...

  • i remember when i played this game, i was 4.

btw that lady reminds me of tech support

  • this always gives me goose bumps :S

    steam sucks shit.

this game is too awesome for steam...

  • iknow a level were you can be a shivan

  • @thestabbingchannel A shivan ship, yeah...had to run around stealthily scanning freighters and if you where discovered your jump drives would fail...the first time I played this, I was like "no...no...no...NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOO WOOOOOORRRRRKK!!!!"

The game just had so many "Oh shit" moments, it made me jump several times.

  • oops i ment to write how

  • if his copilot wasnt dead and ash was wow would it play?

  • played this game when it forst came out and have played over and over,, it made the wing commander series look like missile command, this is the greatest space sim ever created

  • I have never played this game, but jesus titty fucking christ that introduction made me jizz. IMA DOWNLOAD THIS MOTHERFUCKER.

  • This is the game! After looking what I missed out on Wing Commander(because I didn't had CD rom on my old computer back then and finally got a PC with a CD rom). I tasted this game from a friend of mine when we traded our PC games long time ago...HOLY SHIT! I got hooked and now I can replay this game once again.

  • Hahaha!! Just snagged Freespace Descent (CDs) for $9 on ebay. Good thing it was in excellent condition. I have to admit, GOG is a real sweet site, but unfortunately my old computer (which I'll install Freespace on) has no internet connection - which is a damn good thing, too. I haven't updated it's anti-virus/spyware stuff since 2005.

  • I never noticed it refers to itself as "Conflict Freespace" in the intro. huh...

  • by far the best intro scene EVER! I wish they would make a FS3

  • i love this game,,,,it was awesome to be given a villian that u can fear and hate with reason.....as opposed to most things now which are....oh theyre bad guys shoot them...done? ok freespace is like movie but one that u decide the outcome of

  • does anyone know where i could get a copy of this game?

  • @murdock2k8 i got a copy :D and i just installed it today again! you can download freespace 2 off torrent sites and this game still runs on windows 7 :D

  • @murdock2k8 Good Old Games has it cheap, 3 bucks to dl with expansion pack and some other goodies. GOG.com

  • this game needs a remake

  • @novato455 um... Freespace SCP?

  • @jhzh oohh you mean freespace source port mate? theres one out there

  • Best Game ever: Freespace <3

  • When you can feel the panic in a man's voice, even though it's a game...

    Wow.

  • damn! now that i saw this i gotta find those cds and play it again! lol

  • what an AWESOME GAME!!!!!!! ive played it about 100 times and im still not tired of it! as well as the expansion and freespace 2.best space simulator EVER! too bad volition went under.some years ago i had read somehere that they kept the rights to this game or something.wish we would see a sequel.

  • @kafgeo12345 Volition is finew, mate. Interplay's in real strife, and there're legal issues regarding the rights, you're right there, but [V] have had major success with Red Faction and Saint's Row. Many of the original Freespace devs still work there.

  • You shall be avenged lieutenant. I promise you.

  • Somehow, this video intro and game, creeps me out =s

  • Even after all this time, the pilot's terrified pleas still chill me.

  • SEND FIGHTERS!!!!... Awesome game!

  • Still find Shivans terrifying, Bosch had the right idea in freespace 2

  • Still one of the best game intros ever.

  • God damn, I hope that that voice actor (the pilot) went far. He sounded like he was genuinely panicking, holy shit!

  • @SentinelPhoenix Wish I could give a +50 thumbs up for this. The VA was fantastic. Like my other comment here, I *Always* feel dread and get goosebumps listening to him.

  • I MISS THIS GAME SO DAM MUCH ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET IT PLS! TELL ME!

  • @RameshNair525

Sure, GOG website, they have lots of classics for cheap and convenient download.

  • whats up with renaming it Conflict: Freespace?! Descent: Freespace was a win name!

  • This intro scared me as a kid and even now, it sends chills down my spine. That haunting music, the pilot's terror...

  • This game is definitely NOT for scrubs!

  • Very fond memories of this game. Never did play FREESPACE 2 though.

  • @senor360 much better than the 1st one, which is nearly impossible, but it really is.

  • Still gives me goosebumps after all these years...

  • looks similar to freelancer....

  • How many of you would pay for this again on STEAM?

    I would.

  • @AmanOU2be

No need for steam. It's available drm-free from Good Old Games.

  • i would but we DON'T want it on steam, we already have fsport

  • @AmanOU2be I'm considering getting Evochron Mercenary now because i remembered how awesome this game was.

  • @AmanOU2be If your interested its for sale on GOG.com they freespace+expansion for 6$

  • Dumb bitch didnt listen to him.

  • Shit! I just acquired these 2 games, and viewing the demo? Damn these look pretty fucking intense! Wow, can't wait to start these! Thanks for the post "Straint".

  • i miss freespace 2 TT__TT

  • Love how that functionary kept on asking stupid questions...

  • This game, man. Every now and then I search for the old disc, put it in and play it

Enjoy it so much, even after all this years. best space sim indeed.

  • My god this brings back so many memories of this game... I used to play this but forgot about it. Such a great intro... I watched it every time I booted up the game.

  • Like a good film.... amazing...

  • how the hell did i not play this game 0o

  • to this day, one of the greatest videogame intros of all time...

  • I wonder what would happen if Freespace 3 was ever announced...

  • @MrBummelum

    joy

  • never ceases to give me goosebumps :)

  • The first encounter with shivans. It was creepy. What a game!

  • I used to install this game JUST to watch the intro to it. So amazing, even more amazing for 1996(?)

  • god I was so scared when I first saw this

  • Still the best space sim to date. THEY NEED TO MAKE A NEW ONE

  • An Amazing game!

  • After all these years i still think of this as one of the best introduction cinematics for a video game. It's very hard to beat haha, just like the Starcraft brood war intro

  • Man this brings back memories. One of the first computer games I ever played as a child. This game was just so damn interesting that I would sit for hours just watching my brother play this game. Sometimes I would help him out in pointing out the direction of enemy ships. Good times.

  • Best scripted intro ever. You sit there, going. OMFG i must play

  • they need to BRING THE GAME BACK. . . fuck it i would be happy with a reboot or a remastered game in HD.

"The Great War begins - along with the best space sim series ever conceived." just think about that for a min . . . THAT'S FUCKING WORD.

  • @TX51 Its been done man, check the Freespace 2 open project. As long as you have a copy of FS2 (yeah I know its not FS1 but still...) they have an auto-downloader, hi-res textures, advanced graphics, normal mapping, lighting, new effects, all awesome.

  • @budokai140 thank you so much man that has changed my life :) you are like my new best friend lol

now i know ill be back about 3 weeks from now asking for and new game so you guys get started on that and ill play freespace 2 again, ok we all know what we doing? good, break!

  • @TX51 No problem brother! Ive been back at it for a couple weeks now, that installer gives you LOTS of player created campaigns too so you have plenty to do, I think a lot of guys still do multiplayer out there too.

  • I think this and the mechwarrior 4 intro and probably my favourite intros ever

  • For mid 90's, this is the best quality cinematic I've ever seen!

  • Any idea on how to get rid of the color corruption and other issues that appear when playing it in a modern OS? I really miss this game.

  • @wekillyou5 I would love to know. I had this problem and one day it just started working randomly...

  • I have the disk. I MUST FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE IT WORK ON WINDOWS 7.

This paired with my Sidewinder pro should make for a hell of a game.

  • @TheEightBitLink Go to gog.com dude, the game is half off for $2.99, along with the sequel.

  • @Manufan9090 No, the colors make it seem the developers were on LSD. It works, but, wow, is it trippy.

  • The president of Volition, Mike Kulas, lives on my street. It's not in a famous place, just in the suburbs neighboring Champaing, IL.

  • @wassup986 LOBBY HIM TO MAKE FS3! DO IT UPPPPPPPPP

  • @demonicfork He doesn't really know me, I just know that he lives on my street. We never talked, and I'm just a 13 year old kid. If I showed up at his doorstep, it would look retarded. But I can try :/

  • @wassup986 Or lobby him to rerelease FS 1 and 2 for modern pcs/consoles

  • my dad bought it on the first computer we had in 1999, we didn't have the internet, but this game, mario typing and paint was all I needed on a computer. He didn't pass the flight training, but I went on to play this till the end.

  • One of the best Intros I have EVER seen...

  • when i was 13 everytime i came home from school this was the first thing i did. no fuckin rpg or online chatting just sat behind my sidewinder and beat the shit outta vasudans and shivans. thanks to interplay and volition you made me childhood:D ALPHA 1 SIGNING OUT... (alt+j)

  • I still remember seeing this for the first time as a kid many, many years ago, and I still can't help feeling the same mix of excitement, fright, confusion and sheer amazement. This was so far ahead of its time..

  • This scene was just absolutely amazing! I loved it as a kid! Truly epic how they drown out the vocals a little bit as soon as all the jump signatures open up and the noise of inevitability comes through and kind of silences the radio contact like a dark storm rising.

  • The best Intro which i ever seen. I'll never forgett this intro for all time. ^^

  • so intense 0:42+

Loved it as a little kid. Drew those herc bombers fighting shivan cruisers during school. I had all the cutscenes memorized and could perform them to anyone who wanted to hear.

"requesting Immediate fighter cover and rescue- Come in Anybody! (take a breath) Requesting immediate assistance! ANyone Please!!!

    (Change voice by holding nose)

"Barely receiving you Gamma 39er- This is Terran Outpost Riviera Responding. What is your situation?"

    ahh good times good times

  • "We're sending recovery craft right now..."

    "Send FIGHTERS!

    Goosebumps.

  • @johnnychopsocky The best part is.... " YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! YOU WEREN'T THERE!"

That combined with the way he was animated make this more scary than ALL of the horror films I have ever seen!

  • Oh god.. Such lovely game series and amazing intro movie too. Visuals are pretty dated now but atmosphere is still top notch. All time favorites quality for sure.

  • Stunning game. Absolutely fucking stunning.

  • still gives me goosebumps, 10 years later...

  • @drag00re ikr!!

  • I miss this game, I ued to have a copy as a kid but that was years ago, this game was sooo good...

  • @Aturayd i dunno about FS3, but FreeSpace Open is certainly not a "watered down piece of trash" and it DOES run on Windows, Mac, and Linux

  • Poor Lt. Ash.

  • I got this as a Christmas present when i was 7 and this intro freaked me out enough that after the Shivans blew up the Plato i stopped playing for two days because the Shivans were too scary. Good times.

  • this is one of the best games ive ever played. good old summer days playing Freespace n AoE II

  • Ah, the memories.

Mass Effect 2 almost makes up for this, but why aren't there any space sims like this anymore?

Oh and Hydraxa, I kind of agree...there were definitely more unique games by big publishers- the problem is, as long as people continue to buy shovelware like Black Ops, the publishers won't risk their shares and finances with more innovative ones such as, say, Mirror's Edge.

But I definitely miss Interplay, nostalgia be damned.

  • I remember playing this when i was very young, after beating the game i played the extra missions. AWSOME GAME still play it today.

  • i have this game, but i cannot find the disk for it, and i'm so sad because it is such an amazing game...i'm not much for shooting stuff, but it's balanced with enough other things that i absolutely loved it when i could play it

  • 'm a sucker for moody-atmospheric spacey music, and those last seconds of this vid, where the fighter-pilot is killed, had amazing mood music.

    Where can I get it?

  • After seeing this intro, I HAVE TO GET THIS GAME.

  • Best. Game. Evar.

  • Comment removed

  • "I can feel them following me". Great thinking there, bud. You led them right to Terran space. WTF were you thinking?

  • @crazy88boss They already were in Terran space

  • Oh this game is epic

  • Freespace is a UNIQUE MASTERPIECE. I'll never forget this game. Never EVER.

  • than i see this intro,i fall back in the good old times!

masterpiece in the computer game history..

  • I still play this game, and every time i start it up i rewatch this intro scene. This was my most favorite game when i was a child. I am now downloading the free version of its sequel, freespace 2. You can find it at the freespace source code project site. This game was soooo epic for its time. I mean like, it had little competition. I wish that interplay wasn't bankrupt and could make a freespace 3, but things you want tend not to happen your way... oh well. BEST GAME EVER!!!

  • fire in the vaccuum of space

    HMM

  • @frostytheaussie Eating up whatever oxygen was in the cockpit before sputtering out?

  • @frostytheaussie there are laser beams space ships and aliens in this video and the only thing that confuses you is fire?

    HMM

  • still gives me goosebumps

  • when the vid was ended i tought... holy.... i dont wanna be him....... (silence)

i have freespace2 collosses and that game is awesome... i have cheats for it

  • i remember getting this game free when my dad bought his first PC (an IBM) with a DVD drive. I installed it to see what it was like...this is what made me into a gamer, thank you Volition.

  • Christ, i miss this series so bad...

  • My real name is BASTION and its after this game.

  • can't you get the retro version for this game on a website or something? that would be so cool. I have played this since i was 5. Man even now that intro movie touches me. I feel so sorry for the pilot.

  • Fuckin Shivans.

  • Some great voice acting from the guy doing the pilot voice...

  • Ha, I still have this game. maybe I'll give it a go later....

  • Best game ever. Gives me goosebumps.

And you would think it's JUST a game...

  • can some one tell me how to get this game ... i remember playing it back in the day ..n i could not stop ... best game ever !!!!

  • God I had chills running up my spine and this excited adrenaline pounding rush pumping through my veins during this intro. I could NOT stop playing after this. Short shallow breaths and everything, my father was sitting behind me with his mouth open during this intro haha

  • @LegostarwarsFanatic

$6 is too expensive?? Greatest gaming site known to mankind....Good Old Games (gog.com). Get Freespace 1 and 2 for $6 apiece. No DRM, no CDs required, patched to latest official versions, and working from Windows XP to 7. And once you have FS2, check out the Freespace 2 SCP and Freespace Port.

  • 10 dislikers have never played the best game series in the world

  • thats the best fuckin intro ever.omg i want a new freespace. i would be happy even with a remake PLS SOMEBODY!!!...

  • @1Maverick1880 Well, actually there is a remake. Freesace 1 is totally converted to Freespace Open, which is upgraded Freespace 2 engine with modern state of the art graphic. It's called Freespace Port. There is also redesigned Silent Threat expansion called Silent Threat: Reborn. For more info head to hard-light..net forums - the biggest FS community hub. It's a must for every FS fan.

  • My first space sim on my computer. This gives me the same chills now as it did when it first came out.

  • I was always jealous of this Apollo pilot's cockpit. Really wanted one of those in-game.

Great game btw, do I even need to say it?

  • This is how MassEffect 3 should open up.

Military scouting party on edge of galaxy with boundry skirmish gets both their asses kicked by reapers.

    retreat to a Mass Relay.

    Everything dies.

  • Okay... I want to see Freespace - the movie.

No Battlestar Garglactica or Stragrate University soap-opera stuff either.

Just tell the story the games did.

  • 10+ years later this intro still better than a lot of other game came out. I love this game. Love this series. I really wish finally FS3 will come. I would pay anything for it!!!

  • As old as the game is, I still play it. I've even beat it what... 3 times? At lest 2.

  • @TheLegolasguy Haha, I can't even recall how many times I've beat both games. It's a classic. Every couple years I reinstall it and have another go, and thanks to the Freespace SCP Open graphics, it looks better each time I play it. :-)

  • this video everytime when i see, ahh i get angry, and wanted to hunt some Shivans down. cant explain the feelings.

  • @DwyerEP

I feel the same way. You apparently have a well-evolved paternal instinct :D

Fortunately I've got Freespace 2 loaded on my other machine, with my MS Joystick waiting for my itchy trigger finger...

  • The intros to both games still give me the shivers.

  • This is such a great game.

  • best space sim i've ever played.

this just makes me wanna play both games again.

  • This game was from 1998 and it's still awesome.

  • I love this game and Freespace 2! I really wish there had been more sequels. Does anyone know how you fill up your medals in each game?

  • this game is such a fucking masterpiece...

  • Im so lucky that this was the first game i got into

Too bad the genre is dead :(

  • You sir, have been avenged, too bad I died on the sequel :(

  • I was 8 when i first played this game.

The first and one of the best video games of my life!

  • @Shadowcry1000

Same, it was the only game to actually make me cry.

  • anyone know how to get this to run on windows 7? it won't even install...i get some error halfway through

  • @hellsummon Use FreeSpace Open.

  • Holy fuck, what an awesome fucking intro.

  • What a flipping masterpiece. Tell me, EA & nearly every other big game pusher out there- when will we have a diverse selection of PC game genres again? ( I know there are all kinds of games out there, but not like THIS. )...

... We've lost something in the last decade IMHO. Is it just me?

  • @HydraXA

    I agree..wtf happened... :/

this game was so awesome and the intro and voiceacting still gives me the chills

  • @HydraXA

You're absolutely right. What we lost is originality and passion. Hope we'll get it back soon. ;-)

  • @HydraXA It's not just you...i feel you're pain too. There's just such a massive lack of memorable and original games like this. Developers just keep churning out lesser quality games (with some exceptions of course) year after year. Sigh, hopefully, one day, the PC will become the king of platforms again, and not just some mere after-thought to throw crappy console ports at...

  • @HydraXA totally agree, never even liked this type of game before i played this... loved it! played the second one and loved that!!! took it to my older cousin who loved games, hated these types... i told him to play it and he loved it!!! this game is for everyone! great storyline and if only people gave it a chance they would love it to this day!!! Freespace 3 on pre-order definately!!!

  • @Adono86 if it ever made-___-. but if it does come out i will be sleeping infront of the store the day of release

  • @HydraXA hell yes, the market is over saturated with first person shooters that look "modern" , but only for about two or three years

  • @HydraXA Trust me, it's not just you :D
