  • Those P42's Be Hatin! xD

  • AWESOME RIO GRANDE!!!

  • WOW!

  • That's great Nice catch. :D

  • I'm Guessing AMTRAK had engine trouble & call dispatcher too take him too another town too get another EGINE too cont. Route amtrak was on ! ! ! ! That would be my guess ? ANY commits SCANNER MAN

  • Where did you take the video?

  • @The23113: Leland, IL., along BNSF's Mendota Subdivision.

  • It's moments like these that just might never happen again

  • Nie caught Amtrak6

  • That's a lucky sight, amtrak moving on time, and a SD70 DRGW Pulling it...

  • what the heck!!!!!

  • that is a once in a lifetime catch! beautiful loco by the way in very nice condition..most UP locos i see are all dirty :(

  • Thanks, I remember that train. I was the engineer who added the UP 1989 to #6 at SLC.

  • Comment removed

  • amazing not ive seen so many other videos with that as well lol ive seen it when i went to america lol

  • I thought it was an F59PHI but when I saw it was the UP/RG SD70ACe I was like O.O

  • LOL when UP removes the Heritage Units they will all be in Arrmor Yellow

  • I just saw UP 1983, a preserved WP GP20, UP 1996, an F7B, and UP 951 (E9) lead a set of passenger cars and freight cars along with 3 cabeese up the UP Valley sub yesterday. Im in process of uploading videos when I find my camera cable. I do have pictures though.

  • Awesome Video!

  • I need some help here. The merger between the UP and SP took place in 1996. But in 1989, Anshultz(?) had already aquired the SP in the previous year. But yet, the heritege fleet shows the merge between the UP and DRGW in 1989. I can't find anything that says something happened between the two roads to indicate a mergerer happened. Is it possible some stock was traded to the UP as a silent partner?

  • nice completly rare for an amtrak

  • nice!

  • I noticed no crossing bells, gates or signals. Was this a private crossing, or was it a dirt farm road?

  • i dont get it whats so awsome ?

  • @dizzl14 up 1989

  • NICE NICK

Where did you catch this ?

  • near Leland

  • AWESOMMEE CATCH!! NICE VID, Thats a nice horn on that unit, I love it its packing bass & sound high balling pulling Amtrak. cool crew to

  • I spy with my little eye MattBNSF1991... Awesome catch man.

  • oh it's matt foaming his ass off in the plain white shirt

  • That's awesome! :D I wonder if up 1996 will lead an amtrak train.

  • You can tell that Amtrak engineer was having a ball.Great Catch

  • nice catch great video, pretty much here if amtrak needs help its junk power from either ns or gt,so they might as well put 2 npcus on these michigan amtrak trains and let m coast to pontiac or chicago lol

  • Sweet video! I see you were railfanning with MattBNSF1991.

  • Thanks, Evan! Yep, Matt can be seen right on the other side of the crossing.

  • Nice Catch!!! Why did amtrak need 1989 though?

  • Thanks a lot! The second P42 on this train had problems at Salt Lake City and 1989 was right nearby to help out.

  • Why Amtrak 6? It should've been Amtrak 30. :D Then I'd get it! :D

  • Great catch! 8-)

  • Thanks, Tracy!

  • wow the chances of seeing that is rare especially when if Amtrak had problems with engine 139 ok no problem but having problems with the second unit like 17 RARE. AWESOME VID!! 5 STARS

  • Thanks, Nick!

  • Wow!

I've never seen a haratage unit and you see one pulling an amtrak???

    awesome video!

  • Thank you, Austin!

  • WOW!

  • matthew

I'll never see another freight engine pulling the amtrak

  • My brother has in Sun Prairie, WI he and his friend were waiting for the train and a Wisconsin & Southern locomotive was pulling Amtrak engine to Milwaukee because Amtrak runs to Milwaukee, but not on WSOR's lines and WSOR (Wisconsin & Southern) had to transport it back so they used a branch line that connected to Watertown (Madison to Watertown Branch) and thats how they got it transported.

  • Seeing a WSOR locomotive leading Amtrak would be awesome. I've yet to see a WSOR engine in person, so far. I really have to get out to their lines.

  • Awesome catch! Will never happen again I assume.

  • Thanks a lot, Jesse!

  • ah man it just comes to prove you have so much luck train watching as usuall LOL great video..I was caught at a rural grade crossing near my farm when the gates droped the trains climb a blind hill so I wasnt sure what was comeing anf when the train toped the hill I wanted to cry it had the MKT heritage unit in the lead and I didnt have my damn camra with me oh well win some lose some and I say you definatlly got a winner here

  • Awesome. Just awesome.

  • Thank you very much, Lewis!

  • Great catch and a nice vid

  • Thank you, Peter!

  • dang what catch man

  • Thanks, Wyatt! It was quite a sight.

  • Crap.

  • Word in capital letters, Nick you are right, I couldn't come up with anything to say.

  • Wow! I've been hearing of this train. What is UP 1989 doing on it?

  • The second Amtrak unit had some problems and thankfully, the 1989 was right near.

  • Wow, that turned out quite well for you!

  • Yep, I probably won't get this lucky again, lol.

  • Just an incredible event!! Fantastic that you were able to get out and catch this. So unbelievable that this happened and the DRGW 1989 unit pulled the CZ over the same lines that DRGW used for the Zephyr in the 'old days' between Salt Lake City and Denver-- AND then even better they left 1989 on the Zephyr to CHI...!!! You can't put odds on something like this, and chances are it will never happen again. Great, fantastic video!!

  • Thanks so much! Yep, many things had to go right for this to happen. I saw pictures of a common UP loco leading Amtraks before, but never in all my life would I expect 1989!

  • The only reason this happened, is cause the 2nd unit couldn't load when it was in Salt Lake, and 1989 was there after going out on the MNYRO. So it probally will never happen again.

  • I owe a big thanks to 139.

Got to love how these things work out.

  • Yeah, its Rare as it is for this unit to come off the Joint line and go over Moffat. And then a coincidence for a P42 to break down in Roper, were this Unit was, and the UP guys nice enough to put her on point. Good job catching it.

  • Thanks a lot, Adam!

  • lol you owe a big thanks to ME

  • Yes and most of all, thanks to you, Matt.

  • wtf 43 comments

  • Hey Matt,

    I see you...

  • haha I didnt even notice

    :P

  • LOL

    SO that's the Mysterious MattBNSF1991

    A foamer as always!!

  • Wow cool nic. UP herritage unit on amtrak on BNSF one of the rarest things to ever catch. awsome pal.

  • Thanks! Yep, hopefully it happens again someday. The odds are slim that it'll happen again in the near future.

  • How is this "unreal" ? To Union Pacific or BNSF it's just a locomotive. You don't see UP freaking out that UP 3300 or UP 4141 is retired/storage do you? No. Paint Schemes are nothing to UP. They could careless. Nice video though.

  • Thanks!

I don't know, it's just something about the paint schemes that does it for me. It gives the scene more of a "rush."

  • Nick,

That is completely UNREAL! I wouldn't have believed it unless I had seen the video!!! First, an SD70ACe in Rio Grande livery... and second, leading Amtrak!! This is a new high water mark!!! Thanks for capturing it! (Remember once I had mentioned to you about modern locos wearing fallen flag liveries -- this is exactly what I meant!!)

    Congratulations!!!!!!!!! OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!

    Dave

  • Thank you so much, Dave!

I remember the exact conversation we had about locomotives wearing the old fallen flag liveries. Amazing how the exact thing happens afterwards. LOL.

To be honest, I'm still speechless!! ;)

  • that was sweet

  • Thanks a lot, Andrew!

  • All I can say is holy shit!! That's SO AWESOME!! This means 1989 pulled the Zephyr right through Ottumwa, Iowa, where I regularly film trains...rats, I could have seen it had I'd known, and I was only 19 miles from there yesterday!! IOh well, thanks for capturing this, what a GREAT catch. 5*****

  • Thank you very much, Bobby! Yep, this was certainly a surprise to many.

  • Sweet.

  • Thanks very much, Marshall!

  • very nice video!!!!

  • Thanks a lot, Diego!

  • O MY GAWD!

  • that was awesome!

  • Thank you!

  • this makes me want to assemble this consist in "O" gauge! Thanks Nic!

  • You're welcome, Jim! Glad you like it. :) This consist would look really cool in O Gauge!

  • Sweet!

  • Thanks, Robert!

  • awesome video nice catch! you should have panned :D

  • Thanks, Jackson! I left this one panned on the crossing, while I hand holded another video that I panned on. :)

  • Amazing catch!!! AMTK 139 went through my area on the Maple Leaf on Sunday! Im shocked to see that it's on such a rare train only a few days later! You probably have yourself the rarest catch ever! 5/5!

  • Thanks, Daniel! Yep, it's amazing how these locomotives get around.

  • I cant believe that! Great catch! Where was this?

  • Thank you very much! This was filmed in Leland, in between Earlville and Mendota.

  • Now that's definitely something you don't see everyday! But there were already two other P42's on the train, how'd UP end up on there; or were those two units having problems as well? Great video.

  • From the comments on another video, I believe AMTK 139 broke down, and UP 1989 was added in Denver to pull the crippled train.

Why they chose such a fine unit, we will never know.

AMTK 17 was presumably providing head-end power.

  • both P42's were running through Galesburg

  • it was Salt Lake City

there's pictures of this train west of Denver

  • Thank you for the info, Lucas!

  • Many thanks!

Strange things have happened, but I never thought it would be so strange to the point where they'd have a heritage unit leading, lol.

  • best freaking vid ever never seen something so rare

  • Thank you, Eric!

  • Excellent*****

  • Thanks very much!

  • I actually saw this train while driving thru DG later in the day.

  • Amazing how timing works, lol.

  • Great catch!

  • Thank you, John!

  • i think the rarest catch in the hole freaking world

  • true that

  • Yep, definitely.

  • yes true, but wouldnt 5 triple window SD60MS leading a coal load elephant style be pretty rare?

  • Watching that in full throttle, that would literally make me foam at the mouth...no joke. Of course, who could blame me? :)

  • it did. i cant blame you i got teary eyed when i saw BNSF 612

  • ummm okkkkay lol. I've seen 612 lead 2 other warbonnets.....I wonder if that still has it's RS3L, about 3months ago, It did

  • (JAW DROPING) I read that it was on Amtrak....but didn't belive it..untill just now

  • When I heard the news, I really didn't know what to say or think, lol.

  • Holy crap man, what a catch!

    Well done.

  • Thanks, Greg!

  • Thats 139 for ya...peice of crap dies in SLC and makes things intresting thanks to 1989 being in the right place...right time. Nice work, Chicago fans are gonna freak. Rumors are 1989 will lead 5 back. BUT, they may make it a 3 P42 train since there was no protect unit in DEN.

  • no probably UP will have it taken to canal st. in chicago and put it on the bird to salt lake

  • Wonder whether it will lead or not, if it does. The Bird usually leaves at a reasonable time, around noon.

  • Thanks, Alex! Wow, hopefully the rumors hold true about 1989 leading 5 back. I may head out to catch 5 tomorrow.

  • Awesome! Awesome! Too bad Amtrak doesn't have some of those to lead ALL their trains instead of the P-42's!!! 5***** and great catch!!!

    And Favorite!

  • Thanks very much, Gene! Oh, how I wish the heritage units would lead Amtrak more often. :)

  • You're welcome, well the way the P-42's break down all the time you might see something like that again...

  • Looking forward to those days! Strange things have been happening on Amtrak these past few weeks. BNSF GEVO's have been leading, even UP AC4400CW's on the line through Joliet, IL.

  • Atleast someone caught it. Good catch man.

  • Thank you very much!

  • Great catch.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • wow..got goosebumps when that went flying by in the video!

  • Yep, that horn really gives you the chills!

  • WOW

  • Exactly what I said after she flew by. :)

  • Lol took the words right out of your mouth

  • Whow! Wonder why they did that?

    What a catch!

  • Apparently, one of the Amtrak units had a hard time loading in Salt Lake City and the 1989 was conveniently right near. :) Glad that it was nearby!

  • Unbelievable Nic!!!! Wow that is amazing ;)

  • Thanks, Ryan! I appreciate it.

  • You deserve it man!!!

You must've had to hyperventilate for a few seconds after you saw that..... he he he

  • I actually got the chills after it flew by. LOL.

  • Once I saw a train up here in Canada with a CN,UP,CN and unpatched SP..... I almost fainted!!!!!

  • Wow. An unpatched SP in Canada...I'd almost faint too. :) Great catch!

  • That is so unbelievably awesome! Kind of like a modern day Rio Grande Zephyr. Glad you were able to record this historcial event!

  • Thanks, Matt! I had been looking forward to it all of the night before, lol. I feel that the nice crew added a nice touch as well.

  • I'm sure they knew the significance of what they were running.

  • Yep, must have been a fun day for that crew.

  • OMG that is so cool

  • Yep, a thrilling once in a lifetime moment!
