It can't be that true I mean what about all the people that are.. like.. successful in TV? Charlie Brooker for one, other TV presenters, they all have to start off somewhere, I just don't buy this...sorry
This was just hilarious when i first watched it on the full episode, i was in fits. If Grievers Get Gunged wasn't hilarious enough Sick on Widow happens and sends you in to a limp laughing mess.
Ok apologies if this comes up twice! Stupid internet. Ok so I love Charlie Brooker in this scene, not only is he amazingly funny but he also doesn't seem to need to breathe! I would love to see this behind the scenes to see A. How long it takes Mr Brooker to learn his lines, B. How many takes it takes to get it that perfect and C. To see whether he needs a breathing apparatus afterwards!
At the last minute I pegged it from Media Studies into Film Studies. I have no idea if this has saved my life or just simply put me on a different track that leads to the same shit creek.
@PushingPies Sorry to say it's probably the latter. But I, and all the other future failures, will meet you at the bottom of the creek with a buoyancy aid and a vodka tonic :)
He claimed in his Guardian Column today that Jerry Sadowitz is never nasty about people, but I once saw him reduce a little boy and his dad to tears at a magic show with a tirade of "cunts" that would make a rock blush.
Absolutely correct. Except it's slightly worse in real life. Because TV is a dying media that has a shrinking market. The only kind of TV where you stand any decent chance of making programming of genuine quality and integrity is sport. Everything else is vile, desperate, increasingly lower common denominator shite designed to extract text fees and phone in money from morons.
Here's a tip for assessing exactly how crap or not a piece of TV is - imagine it with the music removed.
So how does a producer create something that's decent on TV?
Does the Producer just say Fuck it to the commissioner and create something by themselves anyway, then when the commissioner nearly fires them the rating's go up because of the creation then they get Jealous for not creating it themselves? Then recognition sets in?
Last year Charlie Brooker suggested a campaign to beat the X Factor to Xmas #1 by releasing a 15 second track of children saying 'Simon Cowell: Shit for ears' a few times with all proceeds going to charity. The campaign to make this happen in 2011 has begun... check it out on Facebook by searching for "Simon Cowell, shit for ears" - 2011 XMAS campaign.
I'm up for an intense bonding session with a select co-worker... come on, who wants to hump the chaffinch...? damn I've given my surname away... no delete key, can only type forwards...oh shit, look, not a word, if this leaks out then I'm finished, bloody damn delete key... i told him to get it fixed, oh fuck it... hump me hump me.... for christ sake i wanna take the long boat to tuna town... there god damn you... 82 chars left no 66 no 60 shit its going down 35 bollocks well bye then 11 shit...
@89cheapmonday Yep. Waste of time. You can regard it as a history degree if you like. More a badge of study capability than anything of any use. You wanna make films? Buy a camera and some edit software.
@Stkildaswish Unless you want to make bad, sloppy films with no sustinence then don't listen to this man. Like everything, you need to have some idea of how to exploit and employ certain techniques to make a worthwhile film. For example narrative devices, editing technique and mise en scene.
@Restayvien you say that, but people seem to be fond of criticising film students, perhaps because they have a grudge against people with real creative drive and ambition.
how is media studies representative of real creative drive and ambition? people with real creative drive and ambition do something like Architecture or Graphic Design, a course that requires genuine effort and talent. Not a complete doss course that requires you to make a few 15 minute videos about utter drivel. If there was a course that actually required you to make a film worth wile, with emotion or meaning then fair enough, but at the moment it asks for shit and nothing else.
@Sl4y3rNeb You seem to be confusing Media/Film Studies with Media/Film production. I agree that a degree in Media STUDIES is perhaps not that useful. But one in PRODUCTION does require "genuine effort and talent". Anyone can pick up a textbook and derive from it, it takes a special kind of person to actually go out there and create something worthwhile.
As a filmaker who just finished a two year filmmaking course. I can agree with what you said to some extent. Alot of the riff raff are just there to show up, get there ema and leave. t. There are those of us though that want to make good content and try hard given the limited and resources. Also, you think that architecture is more creative then film making....each to their own I guess.
I know people who plan to go into television. Jesus, would they be scared to see this. Sad thing is, there is always a prat who gets the high up job because he is related to someone in the biz.
@yellowcougar18 every biz is like that, i worked it for 2 years at a world renowed jewelry, the boss was a idiot, and ignored security flaws, BUT he was childhood (gay) friend of the son of the company president....what can you do ? i left.
@revengeguy don't worry its more a slant at tv rather than media studies. you'll be fine 70% of media graduates get a job in the media field within 6 months compared top 50% of other main subjects such as English and media studies is the 7th most employable degree. (research by Westminster Uni if i remember correctly)
If you want a great career in media, go to Oxford or Cambridge and do classics, mathematics, languages... anything that will keep you far away from a polyversity and a mickey mouse subject
Haha, ok, so if this is what it's like from Brookers eyes, working on quite good shows with reasonable budgets on a fairly OK channel, imagine what it's like for the people making "Britain's Hairiest Cuntflaps" for BBC3 or Channel 5!
i have been a director for 25 years and must agree... it is tragically close to reality. i work with several female producers in their 40's and none of them have mates. they have a large variety of cats however!!!
well for starters if u dont live in a usa or india then most other countries film industry is tiny and even if u do get in it would play out pretty much like the video suggest except worse
That is weird I know someone who has done exactly as the video shows as I'm sure many media students have....funny how they are so similar down to the very last detail....
Charlie Brooker is very clever & getting better & better! Lets pray that fame doesnt change him! On a different note - I've never seen starwars on BBC4 is rubbish on TV... much better on radio!
Thats not what i said - im simply saying that a career is just that a career - a career cant keep you warm on those cold winters nights if you put a career before family your always going to be left feeling cold.
Here in the west we place far too much emphasis on a job which explains why there is so much insecurity - start a family instead.

The powers that be are still trying to force that tired "you can do anything you put your mind to" Bull Shit on us - but I am a realist and am well aware that its a numbers game there are simply not enough peachy jobs with plum salaries to go around - and the current job climate makes this fact even more stark .
Of course there are exeptions to the rule - and these are inevitably paraded around as examples but exeption is the word.
The sooner we stop deluding ourselves the happier we wil be
Yeah, my friend who works in telly showed me this recently. Practically every event in the clip is something I remember him telling me about over the years. Scarily accurate...
Was this made by Endemol? I recognise the meeting room in one of the sequences. Bet they didn't show it to their staff. Endemol are one of the worst offenders at what CB is on about . Yes, young people, Unless you know you are Stanley Kubrick reincarnated, or are related to the MD, or have an unearned income, find something else for a career.
Obviously, the people teaching the film course will tell you otherwise (because they're paid to. If they knew what they were actually doing they'd be working in the industry, not teaching it), but Brooker is spot on.
It's only a shitty path if that's the one you choose. The trick is to keep your head down and get stuck in. If you have the chance to fuck over a twatty producer then do it. The majority of people who complain about working the media are the arseholes who'd complain about anything. It's beats standing at a sink for 10 hours a day washing dishes.
It's a comedy, get over yourself. Wow your working for Endemol, that's much more morally just than being a doctor or actually contributing to this world.
I'd rather watch "Barry Shitpeas Sick On A Widow" than half the shit currently on TV.

Well mate, I would rather that than having to spend 17h hours in an edit suite with you. Now run along and get me my tea!

working in TV is a doddle.
This video is the exact opposite of what happened to me.
Yes i was at university, but thats where the similarity ended.
I made a well recieved documentary, yes - But it was about my balls and how one was slightly bigger than the other.
I now work for Endemol.

It's a comedy, get over yourself. Wow your working for Endemol, that's much more morally just than being a doctor or actually contributing to this world.
