I remember sitting in the living room, watching it and my mother happened to walk in just as I was watching the start of 3:37. She get upset, turned the tape off and told me to never watch it again. Betty Boop (BB) was a fairly psychotic bitch, that's what pains me when I see people wearing shirts promoting the character/show. They probably never saw an actual BB cartoon. In one cartoon she fills up bottles using water from a hydrant (not potable) and sells them as 'cure all' snake oil 'medicine'. So evil, even by today's standards that would just be wrong rather than funny. >_<

I think the one safety pin for the three kids was supposed to be part of the show, not to show that the mom couldn't afford three. I don't think this is racist at all, not against Asians or African Americans. I think it was the exact opposite. If it had been trying to be racist, it wouldn't have even let the little black kids and the asian kid in the show. It would have kept them out. These things are useful as documents of their times. To understand what Desi1204 means, I suggest the Spike Lee film 'Bamboozled'. Why has there been such hate/contempt toward African-Americans? I think at the base was/is suppressed guilt for slavery and what followed. While during war stereotypes of the Japanese were bad, the vicious treatment of Black people went beyond anything against any other group.
