My parents didn't want me getting Sega Channel because I could rent games instead. They didn't seem to understand it was more expensive to rent from Blockbuster than getting 50 games for an entire month for $14.99... They eventually gave in and got it for me.. I still have the adapter. They never asked for it back. Its essentially a brick now but it's a nice collectors item.
I really miss the 'ol gaming days! I remember the games from sega channel, like golden axe, Road Rash, Sonic 3, Sword Of Vermillion. Really miss them. BTW, Your videos ROCK!!!!
Actually, there were also games that were exclusively on The Sega Channel. Then, there were games not exculively on The Sega Channel, but that kind of were, at least to me because I could never find those games in stores. One game in particular was a game called Awesome Possom Kicks Dr. Machineo's Buitt. I'm not kidding There was a game that was really called that. However, I could only play it on The Sega Channel because I could never find it in stores.
well for one i think dat ur series dope mann anyway my top ten sege channel games 1. streets of rage series 2.mortal kombat (espcially 2 was tha best) 3.all of the road rash 4.gunstar heroes 5.tiny toon wacy sports adventure 6.skitchin 7.outrunners 8.batman and robin 9.beavis and butthead 10.power rangers the movie
I enjoyed Sega Channel just as much as you're saying. I never stopped playing through. Golden Axe 2 was the shit, and I didn't even know it was the title. I also played Bevis and Butt-head, and yes, a pure classic. My parents would never let me buy it, but thanks to the sega channel. The game was hard for me, and I had to read up for codes....Epic.
Othergreat games I found was Jurassic Park and also the Rampage edition. The JP games were just as cool as Pitfall.
Bonkers Was on The Disney Channel. I used to watch it as a kid. Disney cartoons would air on like Channel 9 or something on Saturday morning back in the day.
Beavis and Butthead was a good game. Yes you would throw the rat into the deep fryer. The game story is that they had tickets to a GWAR concert and they got torn up and they had to go to different places in Highland to get pieces of the tickets. Beavis basic attack was to burp and buttheads basic attack was to fart.
AnotherDude26 The game you may be talking about is Babsy 2 music level search for Let's Play Bubsy the Bobcat 2 ep2 or you may be talking about Rister music level search for Ristar playthrough [Part 4] or you may even be talking about that 32X game called Tempo.
dougd1015 The RF connector that come with the Sega Channel had a slot that you screw your cable wire to. That's how your able to game and watch TV with out having to disconnect anything.
The other thing that I want to clear up is Bevis and Butt-head. Bevis and Butt-head for the Genesis is a completely different game than the weak SNES version. The Genesis one is basicly a platform puzzle game and its pretty good.
Lickmyballs718 I know the game you are thinking of its called California Games. It did have a bit of a learning curve for each event but once you figured it out it was a blast.
Ya the Sega Channel was awesome. I had the service all together for about 3 to 4 years. We had it for 2 years and then my mom stop paying for it. Then we got it back for about a year or so before the service was discontinued. Anyways I do want to clear up some misconceptions. When David is talking about games that had time limits on them he is referring to games in the test drive section. The test drive section would allow you to play games before they come out in stores.
id wake up and hour early on fridays just to play before school in elementray school, my dad used to be stoked i got up so easy ha. and the best game it ever had was a game with sports like bmx, surf, skate, and had hackey sack in it too, cant remember name but that was best game. swear it was called xtreme games or somethin, well let me know if you remember that game, and about your series, great series, juuuts ho long do you think itll last? its great though really
damn i was talking bout this with my friend in an xbox360 party chat so i came and looked it up on youtube. i remember this good, every other friday they would update te games,
The newer genration of games like xbox 360,ps3.... won't make a service like Sega Channel because they would lose profit. games now a days costs alot more then they used to back in the 90's, so they'll never make a serivce like they with the new genration of games.
Oh and dude, do you happen to remember a game back then...I've only a vague memory of it and its bugging me that I can't remember what it was called. In the game, I remember it was largely based around music, like pianos would fall on you and trumpets would attack you. There were pits with sharps in the bottom. Ringing any bells?
I miss the Sega Channel... I used to wake up early on the 1st of every month to see what new games were available, and then every two weeks. Admittedly though, I cried when the cable guy came to take the adapter away.
VC would actually be worth something if it was a subscription service (like Sega Channel) instead of a "buy it" service... The current model just motivates people to hunt for carts to justify roms instead of actually using VC.
Top badass Sega Channel Games: 10: Golden Axe III 9: Earthworm Jim II 8: Road Rash III 7: Mega Bomberman (a BLAST with friends lol) 6: Light Crusader (predecessor to Diablo?) 5: Mortal Kombat series 4: Comix Zone 3: Shining Force Series 2: Phantasy Star Series (especially 4) 1: Shadowrun **** If you haven't played this game, even to this day, you're seriously missing out. This game was easily a decade ahead of it's time, and had the most immersive world ever seen in a game.)
sega always was the first to try cool stuff, the only problem is everyone else one uped them. but for the time being able to play a lot of game demos basicly, threw your cable was very cool, i had it for a couple of months, but i only got it to play mortal kombat 3 before it came out on the consoles.
I never had this service, but did play my friends Sega Mega Drive back in the day. Mortal Kombat II and III, and Sonic and Knuckles were the only titles i played on Sega Mega Drive. The Mega Drive is still a great system.
it's simpel why sony, nintendo or microsoft don't provide this... i think...one of the reasons :)...
Size.... those games from sega channel where like 1megabit... i remember a game advertasing as: ONE FULL MEGABIT OF ACTION :p.... but these dayz... blu-ray discs for games? would talk a hole lotta time to download... if even possible in some country's.... in belgium we can only dload 30gig/month (with my provider)... so a blu)ray disc download :).... see :p
I remember Bevis and Butt-head. The story was, they wanted to go to a gwar concert. You had to collect ticket pieces all over the city. Burger world, The Hospital, The Mall, School, etc. My favorite memory from that game was in the hospital, riding the hospital bed down the hallway.
Hey I think I have the answer to that ball/maze game you were talking about...was it called 'ZOOP'?...that has to be it,I remember it had colrful mazes or something and you controled a blob or ball.I remember it being really hard.
Sega Channel was a great service, I remember when my mom got the service. The games could of continued, I bet you anything that if they were to bring it back, many would wish for the good old day graphics. So hey, I agree, I have recently rebeaten Bevis and Butthead. Let me know if I can be of some help.

I enjoy the videogame recollection series! It's really nostalgic with lots of them, and it's interesting to see what other people think about what was a large part of my childhood (however sad that sounds)
ummm, i know this isnt as "old school" as the other games, but how about the GTA series??? thats kinda changed the gaming word, i mean alot of games have now allowed you to "free roam" just another suggestion.
I bought one of the first, if not the first, video game that hooked up onto a TV. This was "Pong" put out by Magnavox way back when. No color, no nuttin. Just playing tennis, and at that time it cost a small fortune. I tossed it out after we moved. :(
I love what you are doing Dave don't stop this video game recollections are a fresh way to bring us the history of what started the industry hahaha excellent job as always!
I like this new ... "franchise"??? Anyway, I never really got into video games until the ps1, so I can't say much about the sega channel, since I can't revisit it. But I'm sure it was great.
I do like this series. I had forgot about Seaman and Sega Channel, I had a neighbor that had Sega Channel and everytime they updated new games, I'd stay at his house on friday nights (I was in school at the time!) and we'd try to beat them. When we got bored, we'd play his 3DO because he was the only person I knew that had that too LOL.
Before watching this video, I've never heard of the Sega Channel before so I can't really comment on it. One thing I can agree with in this video is that the Power Ranger games were indeed awesome :D
About the series - I love it, keep it going it's great.
Most of the people who might say they don't like this series are Mac users, mostly they only watch your videos for Mac stuff. Personally, I say you don't stop making these videos. I like video games, I subscribed earlier for that as well as others. Keep this series going :)
I like the series and I think I might have the Mac OS X Virus. This morning when I started Safari, apple's start page was nothing but HTML code and youtube was nothing but a blank, white page. I need a antivirus app ASAP!
Great series. I think it's only good for people who actually remember the games your talking about, otherwise they might not be able to relate very well to the topic. I think i'm around the same age as you and I'm loving the series. I can distinctly remember getting an N64 with Diddy Kong Racing & Super Mario 64 for a birthday and playing them both to death.
very good video never played it but i have played a sega its kinda werid ive played every system because ive been playing video games sence i was born well more like 1 years old and the frist system i played was the NES watch my video response
I remember this. Never had it but it looked cool. Too bad Sega had such bad management they really had better games and were more innovative then the Nintendo imo.
Time Warner Cable, TCI and ATT were the only providers that had Sega channel. I loved the service 14.99 cant beat that.

Well now, I have a question for you.
The Sega Channel Adapter; it went into the cartridge slot and plugged into RF connection and acted as cable service right?
Is that how it would work out?
You could receive your cable service through the RF connection coming from the Sega Channel adapter?
Thanks for your time.
I would much appreciate if you and I could talk about our retro game experiences together.

ummm, i know this isnt as "old school" as the other games, but how about the GTA series??? thats kinda changed the gaming word, i mean alot of games have now allowed you to "free roam" just another suggestion.

I love video games and play pretty much everyday, but the subjects in this series so far have not interested me at all.....

The saga channel was also avainlble through
TCI Cable which is now Time Warner Cable.
Wikapidia is not 100% acurate. bacouse people
can edit or add their own entries and definitions. I like this video sities keep it up.

I like the series and I think I might have the Mac OS X Virus. This morning when I started Safari, apple's start page was nothing but HTML code and youtube was nothing but a blank, white page. I need a antivirus app ASAP!

Hey David.
Keep up to good work :-D

What is holding them back? The free service causing bandwidth problems would be one ..
Serendip1ty 4 years ago
I never said the service would be free. I would gladly pay a monthly fee for a service like Sega Channel.
thecreativeone 4 years ago
That would actually work quite well. Great point man. Also great video! I am surprised they had the technology to do that in the 90s!

I remember this. Never had it but it looked cool. Too bad Sega had such bad management they really had better games and were more innovative then the Nintendo imo.
