  • This horse is so gorgeous. I could watch this all day.

  • @TheHorseNinja

Have a few more of him I can post in addition to these... just need to get around to doing it. :)

  • haha i like how he just pounces over the jump, haha

  • @immortalSynn interesting he wanted to go back to his kind in the show jumping arena !? well maybe im just too ignorant for this sport after all which is why i gave it up!

  • @timdivine

"interesting he wanted to go back to his kind in the show jumping arena !?"

...or anyyyyy other horse, in anyyyyyy other arena, in anyyyyyy other discipline. You truly are clueless.

"well maybe im just too ignorant for this sport "

    No friggin' shit.....

  • @immortalsynn he "balked" at the in-gate did the commentator say can you translate that for ignorant me, does that mean he was looking forward to the jump? I know some horses do seem to enjoy jumping like Gem Twist for eg charging enthusiastically towards jumps and dont have to be forced or whipped into performing but I know some that have been. Will call no names of course. Was it the last olympics some were eliminated for doping horses well i hope it wasnt the Pessoas of course. Just saying...

  • @timdivine

"can you translate that for ignorant me, does that mean he was looking forward to the jump?"

No you ignorant yutz, it means he wants to go back to where others of his kind are... which ANY herd-animal will reflexively do when given half a chance.

"Will call no names of course. "

But I will. I'm so sick of the likes of you attempting to denounce what you so obviously do not understand, and I'll call a spade a spade very time. Take your bullshit elsewhere.

  • @immortalsynn my mistake its a hackamore at closer inspection. Still doesnt seem to be enjoying it though. I know a lot more than you think was a member of my countries equestrian show jumping team in my youth and I know all too well the abuse and overwork of some of these animals that goes on. Christopher Reeve paid the price as we know, Zara Phillips almost did on a cross country course when her horse broke its neck, had to be euthanised and she broke her collar bones. Not saying its all bad.

  • Dont think he's enjoying it look at his ears and that evil bit, gave up show jumping for that very reason it is a human -centric vainglorious sport that pushes these animals to a limit for what exactly?

  • @timdivine

Has it ever occurred to you that you lack the faintest idea as to what you're talking about?

Heck, even a first year pony-clubber could look at this horse and see that he's not wearing a bit at all... much less an "evil" one. lol

As such, perhaps you'd be best served not speak out about what you (clearly) have no comprehension of-- it makes you look like an abject idiot.

  • @timdivine

you know, horses actually enjoy jumping....

  • he looks like a really hard ride. hats off to his rider!

  • he looks like he doesnt enjoy it and he's been rapped or something

  • @goldenfilly

He's just a finicky horse who gets upset when changes to aids are applied. Horses who don't enjoy what they're doing do NOT win Olympic medals, set world records (that still stand today), win FEI-level grands prix, nor serve as the primary mount for one of the greatest riders in the world..... and yet, Tomboy did all the above.

That, and the reason he jumps like he does has been explained many times. Has nothing to do with rapping.

  • I noticed he's using a running martingale with a hackamore. Never seen that before. Awesome run :)

  • such a shame a beautiful round only to hav messed up when he blocked towards the in gate, shame beautiful ride though this horse has certainley the most powerful horse that can jump : )

  • my pony is the 14.1 version of this. no jokes !

  • Well he's a good horse but has trouble with triples. Because he has such a long stride.

  • @Laneismynickname

Where are you getting that from? I've seen dozens of rounds by this horse, and in only one did he pull a rail in a triple, despite his size.

  • @ImmortalSynn

I'm not saying he does trow some poles off. But he has trouble with it. He touches the poles almost everytim. You can hear Passoa. And you can see some serious hold-ups.

  • @Laneismynickname

What kind of ridiculous drivel is that?

    1) are you even watching the same horse? He almost NEVER touches rails, lol

    2) unless you're pulling rails, there's no real "trouble" there. This ain't hunters chum, lol.

  • Imagine what hight he could jump if he was able to use his back properly!!

    he is truly amazing!!

  • @ninilein1505

No need to imagine it. This horse holds the North American (and possibly World, though not sure on that one) 6Bar record.

He jumped 6'9" (and as usual, cleared it by a mile, while dangling his front!) from TWO STRIDES, to win the 1996 Alberta Power 6Bar at Spruce Meadows. As far as I know, that record has never been broken for a 6Bar competition.

  • Fantastic jumper but the poor thing looks in agony with every jump..ears flat back and a tight hand on that hackamore bridle probably does not help!

  • @23751

As has been said ad infinitum: horses who are "in agony" don't win FEI championships, Olympic medals, and set highjump records that still stand 14yrs later. In fact, they tend to do something else entirely-- not jump

He's just a finicky horse. It's not unusual among the greats: Judgement (especially during his earlier Michael Matz days) was the same way

Also, the hackamore actually reduced his fidgeting: compare this video with his du Maurier round with a bit. Much less head fussing

  • @ImmortalSynn Having seen the du Maurier rounds I can see your point but it makes a more pleasing view for spectators if the horse manages to prick his ears and look as if he is actually enjoying himself at some point during the round!! Is he still competing at top level?

  • @23751

No, in fact he had a very short (but accomplished) career. He was Rodrigo's top/primary international mount from 1994-1997, taking over from Special Envoy. He was sidelined in '97 after several minor injuries piled up on top of each other; and by that time, Rodrigo had really gotten into groove with Baloubet, so they decided to retire Tomboy. Last I knew, he was out at field, somewhere in Belgium.

  • @ImmortalSynn Thats a shame he's an incredible horse. I mean he's so careful not to get a rail down that he jumps a little higher just to clear it. What a horse!!

  • @iloveanimals4eva

Yeah. Doubt we'll ever see another one like him any time soon... but one good thing to know is that: unlike most grand prix geldings (who later end up as schoolmasters for junior/amateur riders) the Pessoas practically never allow their international mounts to work after retirement. They usually retire them to pasture in either Belgium or Brazil. Tomboy probably never worked another day in his life. :)

  • @ImmortalSynn - Exactly. A horse that is jumping so well, at this level, is most DEFINETLY not lame, or hurting in any way. This is a $1 million+ horse, and I think Rodrigo $ Nelson Pessoa know how to keep a grand Prix Jumper sound.

  • @jumpergurl4190

Indeed, and what's really great, is that I found out last week that Tomboy is still alive!

Granted, it's unfortunate that it took (the press release announcing) the death of Special Envoy for me to learn this, but still somewhat heartening, in its own way.

  • @ImmortalSynn - No kidding! That's great! (about Tomboy being alive.) Is he a stallion? He could make sooo many talented babies.

  • @jumpergurl4190

Unfortunately no. I wish I had a cool million or so sitting around doing nothing-- because I'd have Cryozootech on the phone right now, and be talking about cloning him, a-la Gem Twist, at this very instant!!

  • wow he doesnt jump he flies !

  • How tall is that horse?

  • Oooo! Oooo! Can I get in on this fight? Scope is ACTUALLY the horse's adjustability to the fence, in terms of his stride. In other words, if you ask him to take a longer stride to get to a better spot, can he? And if you ask him to wait an extra stride for a better spot, can he do it?

  • Not very scopy horse spend way to much time in the air.... still a good ride

  • @BexaEquestrian4

LOL, you just proved that you have absolutely no idea what "scope" actually means.

  • @ImmortalSynn hahaahah you seem to be mistaken also he has no "scope" meaning the shape of the legs over the fences he is not "tight" with his front end although he does have a good "kick out" with his back end. But he wastes all his time in the air.

  • @BexaEquestrian4

Um, you've just proven (for a second time) that you can't tell the difference between scope and a tightened bascule... and yet you're laughing?? At what, yourself? LOL!!!

  • @BexaEquestrian4 I was laughing at you because I bet you get all your informatiom from books and the internet. Do you even ride? Can you even jump close to this height? I understand what scope is-- its basiclly how much room the horse leaves bettween the jump but it also means the style of how a horse should jump the "kick out" and the tight front end are added into scope.

  • @BexaEquestrian4

"ts basiclly how much room the horse leaves bettween the jump but it also means the style of how a horse should jump the "kick out" and the tight front end are added into scope."

....aaaaand, you now prove for a THIRD time that you have no idea what scope actually is!!!!

How dimwitted are you? Anyone with half a brain would've either 1) piped down the first time they got called on their obvious ignorance, or 2) had enough sense to ask someone who actually knew.

  • @ImmortalSynn Excuse me? I am starting to belive you don't know!!!! OH by the way answer by question DO YOU RIDE????? DO YOU JUMP CLOSE TO THIS HEIGHT??? OR ARE YOU DO YOU GET ALL YOUR INFORMATION FROM THE BOOKS AND INTERNET MOST OF WHICH ARE COMPLETLY NOT TRUE?????

  • @BexaEquestrian4

Let me let you in on a little not-so-secret, kiddo:

trying to turn the subject about me, doesn't do a thing to cover the fact that 1) you didn't know what you're talking about, that 2) you were too prideful to admit your ignorance, and 2) that you're too dim to have simply asked someone who DOES know (or just plain look it up).

So for all it matters, I could be Margie Engle, or I could be someone who's never SEEN a horse, but it wouldn't change any of the above now would it.

  • @ImmortalSynn Ok let me tell you something

    1) If you ride or dont ride plays a huge part in what you are saying because if you dont ride and you have gotten all your knowlege from the books and internet you have not actullay learned anything!

    2) I know what I am talkiing about because for all you know my trainer could be an olymic athlete?

    3) These little numbers you are using are pissing me off.

P.s- I am going with you have never jumped or proabably ridden in your life..explains alot.

  • @BexaEquestrian4

Wow, you learned nothing from the previous post. Perhaps "dimwitted" was too generous? But to answer your simple-minded assertions:

    1) again, I have nothing to do with this. Whether I'm Pessoa or whether I don't ride doesn't change the fact that you were wrong, ignorant, and too much a fool to recognize either.

    2) Your trainer didn't make that idiotic mistake, you did. LOL

    3) Who cares

Ps. "go" with whatever you'd like, it won't change anything I've thus far said to you.

  • @ImmortalSynn So tell me you all knowing god what is scope? You have also learned nothing from my questions. Riding a horse is so much different from just repeating what the books tell you. Calling me a "kiddo" and "dimwitted" just tells me how much more immature you really are-- how do I know you are not lying about yor age and you are really a fat 13 year old who spends all your time sitting on your ass pissing people off on youtube and using "big words"?

  • @BexaEquestrian4

"So tell me you all knowing god what is scope?"

And it only took you a dozen or so posts to ask... I was wondering.

Anyway, it's essentially a horse's ability to negotiate the heights/widths required of him, as granted by the combination of his natural conformation+conditioning.

It has NOTHING to do with his form. It has NOTHING to do with how he tucks his legs. It has NOTHING to do with how he kicks out.

And it's also relative to what's asked of them.

  • @ImmortalSynn You didn't read my posts very carefully did you?

"It's basiclly how much room the horse leaves bettween the jump" In your words "it's essentially a horse's ability to negotiate the heights/widths required of him" same fucking thing???? But you are mistakenagian it IS also his ability to jump his "style" the way he hold himself in the air the horse here hangs his legs and is "hollow" in his back but has a great "kick" helping him be careful over fences.

  • @BexaEquestrian4

"But you are mistakenagian it IS also his ability to jump his "style" the way he hold himself in the air."

    WRONG!

In fact, if you had any historical experience, you'd realize that oftentimes the scopiest horses tend to have some of the WORST form, because they don't NEED IT in order to finesse their way over the fences.

Look at this horse, or the likes of "V.V. It's Otto" or "Calvaro V" or "Mont Cenis"... none of them great in form, all of them INCREDIBLY scopey.

  • @ImmortalSynn

You still don't get it do you?

You can sit here and brag about some unnamed "Olympic athlete" trainer (wow, never heard THAT one before)... but all it shows anyone reading this is that you must be sleeping through his/her lessons, as anyone of that caliber wouldn't make half of the mistakes/assumptions that you've presented here.

In essence, you'd be doing yourself a favor if you DIDN'T try to boast about that, as you'd then have an excuse for that kind of mistake!

  • @ImmortalSynn I understand everything "kiddo" --- I don't need to share names on this site--Who ever said I am repeating exactly what my trainer has said? And I have had a small mistake the on very first comment because I clicked post b4 I was finished writing-- all the rest are correct if your werent so critical you would realize that. You must have low confidence if you have to approve comments and try to make yourself look "big" and "smart" on the internet.

  • @BexaEquestrian4

"Who ever said I am repeating exactly what my trainer has said"

Nobody. If your alleged trainer said something like that, then s/he sure as heck is no "Olympic athlete"!

    "You must have low confidence"

Nope, just low tolerance for mindless profanity. Anything else is free to express, or have you somehow NOT noticed that you've had no trouble saying anything you want to say?

  • This horse doesn't look like a definate hunter/jumper but he sure is powerful! Wow!

  • Comment removed

  • ...look at his Olympic and World Championship Gold medals, all over the place.

    Grow up.

  • Comment removed

  • Nah, just indicates that you're too naive/ignorant to have realized that equitation is a construct meant solely for amateurs.

At this level, the overwhelming majority of FEI-quality riders have long-since valued functionality over form.

  • personnaly I hate pessoa, but he has some great horses and some great rides!

  • agreed! his elbows drive me bonkers

  • ...I'm curious ...as to whether his numerous World Cup, World Championship, and Olympic medals-- have the same effect. ;)

  • lol i'm aware of his many accomplishments. i wasn't saying he is a bad rider. his elbows stick out, and it drives me bonkers. but that wouldn't change the affectiveness of his riding, it's just an aesthetic thing.

  • Oh, I know... that was just my way of lamenting the general pointlessness of nitpicking aesthetics in the jumper ring.

  • i know, i know, trust me. i just don't really like his attitude either, from the few things i've heard him say or read that he's said. maybe i caught all his bad days tho. but that's my biggest difficulty right now, transitioning from hunters to jumpers. i know hunters is about the horse, but in my training you had to look perfect as the rider as well. and my friends keep yelling at me, because i'll do exercises over and over until we both look perfect. it's just jumpers, they say. bah!

  • Careful not to let that overwhelm you though... I've seen people in A/A jmprs or higher, who've recently transitioned from relatively high/established hunter careers-- still trying to ride their corners and the like. Then they look completely befuddled when they've just had a clean jumping round, but are barred from jumping off due to time faults. Sounds ridiculous, but seen it happen too many times to discount the possibility of riders getting mentally stuck like that.

  • oh I know, I've seen it too. I'm getting much better at it, and have been practicing sharp, small turns and jumping jumps crookedly and stuff. baby steps!

  • @ImmortalSynn lol i know that, i was just backing you up

  • @ImmortalSynn when it comes to the bigger jumps such as these you cannot worry about looking pretty ontop of trying to control a 1800 pound free thinking animal over foot tall jumps.though he is no Brianne Goutal, i think he is a beautful rider simply for the fact he can ride anything, he is simply amazing.

  • Uh... you're telling the wrong person-- we're saying the same thing.

  • three words that he might have said:

    WELL THIS SUCKS

No offense (I feel bad), but those words just popped into my head as he said "Won't make it into the jumpoff"

  • ...he was probably thinking even harsher words than that-- and who could blame him, they missed the jumpoff for the Olympic medals by barely one quarter of a second!

  • this horse and rider are absolutely amazing. best jump is at 0.40 deffianately, he seems to glide.

  • Most powereful? Nope, that would be the late great Idle Dice.

  • Complete disagree.

Idle Dice was indeed a great horse, but doesn't hold a candle to this one when it comes to raw scope.

This is the horse BTW that continues to hold the 6Bar record.

  • Ughhh!!!! If he hadnt had napped then he would have easily made the time! Horses do add some variety into this game! haha

  • This horse can jump! but he's always got his ears back !!!!!

  • i love how when he jumps at 0.40 Tomboy like floats there for wait seems like ages then decends absolutly amazing horse!

  • He truly was.

I nearly cried-- he missed the jumpoff for the Olympic medals by less than half a second. :(

  • very nice round. was this horse abused before he went to rod? because his ears are always back, bless him, i dont think its rod's fault either.

    <3

  • omg horses r not ugly even though they might look gangly

  • amazin animal, rider is very easy on the eye!!!haha!!!

  • I've always thought Rodrigo was something of an ugly duckling when younger... but saw him when he won Charlotte earlier this year, and he really has grow into his looks. Handsome fellow. ;)

  • what is that bit called this horse is wearing?

  • He's not wearing a bit, but instead using a Hackamore.

  • The whole time I kept yelling "no way!" That horse is amazing. His rider's not too hard on the eyes, either. :P

  • ...if you think THIS display is amazing, you should see his video "Most Powerful Showjumper Ever". THAT is amazing!

  • I think that's how I found this video, and I was yelling just as loud then. My poor roommie kept wondering what I'd sat on, LOL!

  • ...if that makes you scream, I'm trying to find the one where he wins the Alberta Power 6Bar... by clearing the 6'9" final fence, with only two strides in front of it, with absolutely RIDICULOUS ease!

  • Why do you think he is not hard on the eyes?!

Because he is Rodrigo Pessoa, 3-times World Cup Champion, 2 times World Cup second place, World Champion in Rome (1998), Individual Olympic Gold Medal (Athens 2004) and 2 times Team Olympic Bronze medalist (Atlanta, 1996 with this horse and Sydney 2000). Additionally, he got 5th place at the last Olympics.

Moreover, he is young and will probably become the ultimate rider ever seen in this world. Next time, I suggest you get informed. : )

  • ...um, you do realize that "not hard on the eyes" is a compliment meaning "beautiful", do you not?

  • LOL, I was thinking more along the lines of "good looking" or "attractive", but "beautiful" works, too. XD

  • Wow, what an interesting jumping style! I could see myself falling off this horse repeatedly.

  • what a horse! he is really something, it sux though cause with out that time fault they would have gone on and we could have seen more of him he can really jump

  • ...you can see more of him at his other two videos here ;)

  • Now make that "the other three" ;)

  • he is sooooo amazing!!!

  • he has a interesting jump but he is sooo pretty!

  • Agreed... ain't he a looker! Really wish he was a stallion, would've loved to see what his offspring would've come out like.

Make sure ya check out his other vids ;)

  • Hmm I see what you mean. Awesome horse!

  • incredible horse

  • OMG :40 sec is crazy! he jumped that like a puissance fence haha

  • ...indeed.

I'm trying like heck to find the tape of him winning the Alberta Power 6-Bar, so I can post it here.

He jumped 6ft 9inches, after clearing several smaller fences in front of it, for the win. He cleared the final jump in his usual fashion: plenty of air!

  • thats crazy he is most deffenetly one of those one in a lifetime horses...btw where do you get all of your videos!? lol

  • *tisk tisk tisk*

...a lady never tells her secrets.

    Granted, I ain't a chick-- but y'know, whatever, same shit applies :)

  • *sigh* lol

  • I have video tapes of jumping from the 80's & 90's I most get up - Milton at Hickstead double clear Nations Cup etc, etc

  • Neat... though what I'd really like are more videos of L.P. Tomboy.

Trying to secure some now, it's just taking time.

  • all great jumpers are Freaks - if you breed one your very Lucky - TomBoy was bred in Co. Clare, west Ireland by a good Thoroughbred Coevers (1965 USA) - grandson of Nasrullah) out of a half TB mare by Jab (ch. 1955)

  • ...how do you feel when you miss the Olympic jumpoff by ONE SECOND?!
