its not rly hardware, u see gta series were never optimized for ati cards, and this is just a bug..install the version 2 patch and latest driver then it might work

no, it's not an ATI HD4870 problem. It's a SAPPIRE ATI 4870 problem. Most other manufactueres who make the 4870 for ATI don't seem to cause this. =/

Sapphire putting out cards not ready for use is quite irresponsible. Tech savvy people may know how to easily solve it by flashing the BIOS themselves, but Joe Consumer doesn't.

I certainly don't. I mean, I know what bios flashing is somewhat, but I don't knowhow to do it. Fortunately editing some of the clock values on the appdata files seems to have fixed it for me, plus increasing the fan speed.

Guys Sapphire has released a new bios fixing that issue for these cards.

Just check you have P/N:188-01E85-001SA,SKU#11133-­00 ONLY and go to sapphire site in drivers section.

Seems to be. No games have crashed like that or frozen up so far after a week, so I'd say it's all good. Oc course there'll always be game crashes but they weren't because of the GPU, just the games screwing up randomly. I certainly didn't have to reset my entire computer. Don't forget to dial the fan speed up too.

I have this same problem(with the same card)on Company of Heroes and Warhammer Online(strangely enough not with WoW).

I've run 8.9 for a while now and I still get the same error.

ATI better fix this 'cause we ain't the only one with this problem, else I'm getting aa nVidea card.

Ok so I have the same card and it works well, but wen I messd with ati overdirve and used auto-tune(auto-tune decided that for my system, the gpu clock to 820 and memoru clock to 1150, are fine) it workd fine in 3dmark06 and in other programs but when I tried to play (let's say oblivion)it crashed after 1 min. So i put my card to stok setings(GPU clock 750, memory clock 900) ad guess what:) it didnt crash any more. So if u oveclocked your card just a little bit this might be the problem;).

Happends to me that the colors mix all up from lines to even squares all over the screen and the comp completely locks up. never noticed any black screens yet, but i have to press the reboot buttom to get out of there. I do also use a Sapphire 4870. However, when i play etc flyff in fullscreen this happends but i've never noticed it in windowed mode yet. that might be a temporary solution to try out windowed mode (yea, in most cases it sucks :/)

But, its just a suprise that default/auto settings failed where as other ASUS boards (this is my 3rd board from ASUS) have been ok with not having to actually mess around with those settings. Timings etc I just let the SPD do its thing (since this is where manufacturer is meant to keep settings). So it was default (timing) @ default (voltage). Not 4-4-4-12 @ default/auto. Its now on default (timing) @ 2.1v.

I just did alil' test... I set all the parameters to low and did bad resolution and played for 25 minuets... then set all to high and good resolution and played for more 15 min.. then set it all to very high and good resolution played 15 min and crashed....
