This is a mellow Eyes but still mighty fine indeed. I love the Eyes but I'm now on this kick w/ those 1973 versions of They Love Each Other. Anyway its played by the boys sounds good to me but I'm diggin that rockin up-beat boogie versions of TLEO. WE MISS YOU JERRY!!!
Eyes is the Dead's greatest song, lyrically and musically. Lyrically, it is the best expression of Zen ever captured in song. Musically, it is a simple and complex jazz beauty that provides all the flexibility Jerry needed to be brilliant in any mood and mode. This one I love for the tempo and ease of spirit. It was a good day!
They were brilliant as a group and each was brilliant in his own way.... the greatest meeting of people and music in history... never happened before and might never happen again. I am grateful it all happened in my lifetime! Thanks for posting this version.... I love the 12 minute time... maybe someday you tube will allow 20 or 25 25 minute Dead numbers.... ahhhh the Grateful Dead Channel!
I keep coming back to this version of Eyes. It really is a beauty.
My favorite Dead period is '71-74, but there's something about Jerry's playing in and around '77-78 that is really technically advanced. Not sure what his personal scene was like then, but he really did hit a beautiful peak in his musical knowledge.
@fenderfunk - yeah, i agree. For me the range is 71-78, a series of peaks like on a mountain range. Have you checked out the GD release "Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings"? There's an Eyes from June 8, 1977 that surpasses (or at least rivals) this one. A work of art...
@chasefukuoka61 Two shows from may 77; three discs per show= 6 Discs of sublime recordings from that year all at just a few bucks more than the normal 3-4 packages from Deadnet. Very great.
You have truly grabbed the essence of this song, picked the perfect version and then made it a "song of your own"...I know Jerry is smiling at this production! Great work! Totally awesome!
By creating this video, you have done the impossible: you have IMPROVED on what was already perfect - the 1977 Grateful Dead at their best. You have also shown us all, through your art, why the governments of the world fear LSD so much - because it turns us into free thinkers, noncomformists and ultimately enlightened, egoless devotees of peace and love. And the governments of the world, the ultimate ego trips, can't possibly tolerate THAT for even a second.
Hay now!!!!!! Bob and Phil should be proud of this vid whart a Tribute any video response will be approved in the future you just got an A+ from mountainboy32!!!!
@ninety9prbs - Well, thank you for your kind words, this was a labor of love, one of my all time favorite eyes... Jerry's 3 min solo from about 6:40 never fails to make my heart smile. If you have a chance check out the audience version (link provided under the video) at the end the crowd just ROARssssss.......
Thank you so much. What a lovely video, for one of my fave's, and just the ticket to get me outta da funk! See me smiling for the memories, so grateful!
@mythtree - i'm glad... yeah, its kinda like medicine, hearing the music and thinking about the love and joy the band was sending out with this song....
I often tried to exhaust. Lesson learned.
