its never occured to me b4 but i imagine qutie a few of the loco drivers and staff were dissapointed by the changes to the (eventually) more efficient diesel locos.
at 2:01 is Bittern the A4 4-6-2 Pacific, Ive seen her at the Watercress and on a tour in March 2010 going through Bushey at speed. So sad that steam locos demised, great to see many floating around, but they really were something else, they lived and breathed. Beeching culled so many lines and cut off communities. However, as sad as it was the end of steam locomotives was inevitable :( they were fantastic :( Delighted the younger generation like me can still see them :)
It will certainly be interesting in a few years as the winter weather gradually worsens and the Solar flares that are due to strike, in a technological age of alot of electricity, it will all be rendered useless, and the diesels with their electrics will fail. It will be back to the steamer and mechanical signals
i have a film here and its the only copy im sure, its called building an A1 pacific at dpncaster works on 1948,but i dont think you will let this info pass as i will be doing something against you by showing what you might not have and that you wont like, its the same with deltics nobody is bothered any more
Yes! it all seemed so permanent back in those days, a great selection here of North Eastern and Standard BR Locos. In all the years steam reigned supreme the railways provided jobs and skills for countless thousands up and down this land, granted some areas of operation became unprofitable. But in having let loose the Arch Vandle Beeching, is the reason for the traffic problems we are facing today.
"lelboy" agree with your comment 100% Very atmospheric video, thanks
Nice to see Bury Bolton Street in there , now in 2010 seeing probably more steam than it did back in the late 60s! - no 3rd rail electrification anymore tho! Also good shots of streak 19 @ Hawick , hopefully one day Hawick will rejoin the national rail network.
Brings back memories of train spotting in the early to mid sixties. The great steam engine sheds at Old Oak Common and Willesden Junction. The big round turntable house at Old Oak Common. There was something magical about steam trains. They were almost living things.
I m sad,I wanna live in the 30 s 40 s 50 s and so forth so on..I wanna live in every year after the year 1900 and before I m sad,I wanna live in the 30 s 40 s 50 s and so forth so on..I wanna live in every year after the year 1900 and before 2000 cuz today sucks... :( cuz today sucks... :(
Thanks for subscribing. I suppose that, in reality, some of the old lines had to close - for various reasons, but it still is a fact that so much of our heritage is gone. Thanks again for putting up such good stuff. Les
@lelboy It was more Ernest Marple who was the criminal.. he was the one who ordered the Beeching report and manipulated money away from the railways into the roads.. not surprising really he was a major sharehlder in a road construction company! The whole thing was a conspiracy to close down our railway system!
These Steam Locomotives are beautiful! I will always remember them... "Sob Sob" Some people dont get it! I mean whats the problem about steam engines?! Some people are complaining about them. just wish they bring Steam locomotives back!
albeit we must look ahead, the newly built class A1 "tornado" will once more fill our lungs with sweet steam, coat our suits a healthy black, and have our ears bask in the steam locomotives' enchanting bellows; the steam train is coming back (though sadly not on regular services)!
this video is brilliant I just love steam how they move the smell the look It's like a liveing thing you can nurse it back home but you can't with the modern trash. and I've got to be up early bank holiday to light up a couple of steam engines and fire them I'm doing the fireing at my nearest museum which has a narrow gauge railway
From a country that pioneered the railways, what the bloody hell have we got now? With new locomotives etc... going to be made in china. What is unbelievable, the newest locomotive running on British Railways is a Steamer "60163 TORNADO"
Yes, A few of the BR standard class 9 freight engines had the mechanical stoker, some were at Saltney for the Carlisle freight, which was a lodging turn for the crew
@boazrg i did 50yrs ago,a long lasting memory im proud of,when we first saw them in our region,we called them spaceships, because of the size and blinkers. a strong and handsome engine, scrapped before they were hardly worn in HAPPY DAYS
Dead right. There was no more powerful locomotive than the US Challenger and Big Boy classes. Problem is UK loading gauge makes, plus inherently greater labour costs of steam. Electrics 'don't count in my book 'cos all their power comes through the wires!
Steam turbines may yet appear. Stanier proved the technology, 21st Century 'tech' may find a more efficient way of implementing it.
So sad people feel they have to spoil an already youtubed, compressed clip with a great big logo of their own. Any chance of advertising goes straight out of the window - no-one is ever going to use this!

@lelboy If it weren't for Beeching, there would be no closed lines for preserved railways like the Bluebell, North York Moors or the East Lancs Rly
kingmush3602 1 year ago
@lelboy : well, the rails had to go because of lack of public patronage and also Britain's economy declined when it gave up the colonies
3NUNS 1 year ago
@lelboy unfortunately you cannot blame Beeching for the railway closures. It was a government decision.
If he hadn't done it, someone else would've.

Agreed. It was a very cynical plan, not to modernise but decimate the railways.

Did any UK steam engines have mechanical stokers? You wonder how one man could have kept a large engine in steam at high speed.

A British Rail worker (as it was then) back in the 80's did tell me that they had designed a modern steam locomotive - as in they had the plans drawn up for it but it must have come to nought. But I do recall seeing a program on tv about the closure of the Woodhead route and a driver said that 90% of drivers preferred diesel and electrics, with their cabs, and would not go back to steam if given the choice.
