Humans have been doing drugs long before your childhood, or anyone elses. Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it wasn't there... The romans were ALL about poppies.
Exactly. You know who was sitting in John & Yoko's room during their bed-in in Montreal? Yeah. Tommy Smothers. He was hangin with the cool kids. Not the innocent naive ones.
@jojo2664488 Idiots, all of you. You have no sense of time or history. When this clip was first aired, there was no wide-spread drug culture. This was long before the Beatles hit the scene, before Hippies, etc. Dick Smothers did not get into the drug scene, although Tommy did. After 1967, Marijuana was a prominent fixture in the writers office at CBS. You talk like you know, yet I doubt you were even alive when they were popular, and certainly not in the folk era. Now, shut up.
I thought there was a version where they said the cabbage was boiled to cook hotcakes in. May have tasted good to the pioneers, but-like Tommy said-it wouldn't work very well today.

So refreshing. Clean, genius humor. On long trips, my parents would play this bit but I was so young I didn't understand why it was so funny. I recently youtubed this about a month ago after watching a documentary about these guy who fell in a crevice and it reminded me of this. the whole time i was saying "he's stuck in deep cravass! hope there are no pumas." first time actually seeing the guys. its a lot funnier seeing them do the bit.
Wow! I am 53 and I can only faintly remember a time when network censors wemt thumbs down on uttering the word "hell". Times certainly have changed...
These guys are true American Heroes and I still feel that way. God Bless these brothers! My dad had all of their albums & I still love that Puma's were 'Frothing in their mouths in deep Cravices!!' Fantastic stuff!
I used to see Dickie at least 3 nights a week in El Porto , Manhattan Beach at Orville & Wilbur's ...Dickie came in and enjoyed the hospitality circa 1972
Bwahaha It's been ages since I watched a B&W TV set with horizontal hold issues! The Smothers Brothers were revolutionary for their time. I know they inspired programs like "Laugh In" and "The Flip Wilson Show."
(cont'd) Their schtick is formulaic: they start singing, Tommy disrupts humorously/controversially), Dick chastises him, they resume and repeat this several times, often not finishing the song. Over time, their patter became increasingly political and anti-Nixon. That's why their show and "Laugh In" were canceled. I'm glad they're still performing. They are American icons.
It's so odd to see all the comments about how squeaky clean these guys were, and maybe they were, at first. But they evolved and changed for the better. Tommy got away with a lot of double entendre comments because he looked so middle America. They were both smart, witty and so good at what they did. They were also very brave, Tom especially, with the way they jousted with the censors at the time of their series. Bravo to the Smothers Brothers!
Those truly WERE the days, lol!! The Folks Singers Guide Book indeed. I grew up to the sounds of these two comedic geniuses, and loved every minute of it.
Liner notes from the "Mom Always Liked You Best" LP:
"Last February I was lucky enough to have on my television show two of the zaniest and most refreshingly funny guys I've ever known.
When the first bounced onstage that night in their bright red blazers--shoebutton eyes shining and faces freshly scrubbed--I was sure they had mistaken the studio for an eighth grade dancing class."
I used to have this one on one of their albums. I love the Smothers Brothers - they're so goofy and their music is excellent. I love their comedy but I love their music more.
The Best Brothers Smothers bit ever! I've remembered every word of this version for (blush!) almost 40 years.
But let me be the next to point out: There are LOTS oi pumas in America. Pumas (a/k/a mountain lions or cougars) are FROM America. Whether they live in cravasses, is another matter.
This clip was taken from a Jack Benny program. He had them on his program just as they were getting started in their career, just likke so many other talented comedians and musicians. Jack Benny was a class act too,
Tommy & his pumas!! lol. I remember that ",,vicious beasts who look like pumas" thing way back when. Also-FDI-America's the only 2 continents that DO have pumas.
Man oh man. I surely enjoyed this happy little break listening to these guys. If they don't make you nostalgic for a bygone era, I don't know what will.
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The big secret was that Tom and Dick were actually very good musicians. Their show was extremely funny and they did everything possible to get past the censors.
this is hilarious. i saw a clip of them in american history. because we are learning about the hippy movement and things that included all the veitnam war

Their mouths didn't match because the syncronization is off after so many years of this video surviving. I'm really amazed there is as much of it viewable as there is. Old video tape decomposes (note all the "scrambles" during the playing). Someone must have had this in proper storage for a long time. Lucky for us!
Humans have been doing drugs long before your childhood, or anyone elses. Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it wasn't there... The romans were ALL about poppies.

Not the first hippies, just the first ones with their own prime time TV show.

Their mouths didn't match because the syncronization is off after so many years of this video surviving. I'm really amazed there is as much of it viewable as there is. Old video tape decomposes (note all the "scrambles" during the playing). Someone must have had this in proper storage for a long time. Lucky for us!
