@zanoases I don't get all the Christina hatred. It's as if one must sing 438975789 octaves to be a singer. Her songs are also ridiculous recorded and hard to pull off live. She has an AMAZING voice, deal

@adrianwaj of course mariah never had that vison with tommy he is so old and dicusting she did it to be able to produce all those records which she could have without him but she got tommy because it gave her career a big boost
@repenttyourself Both performances are very similiar, but if you listen carefully you will see diferences: here @ 3:17 she says "just knowing the...,in Madison in the same part she doesn't says the word "just" (2:18 ); in NYC she says eventually @ 2:23 in a different way that in Tokyo in the same part (3:23 on Tokyo).
Of course there's more details, but the main difference is on melisma part: in Madison (2:37) she does it longer and more continuous(and better) than she did in Tokyo(3:36).
So annoying that this is dubbed. I played this along side the Madison Square Garden DVD performance and in parts of it, they are dubbed both with literally the EXACT same vocal. Ugh.
They aren't the exact same. There are many differences which someone else has already pointed out. Plus, if you listen to some of the undubbed ones, they sound very similar to this, in fact more similar to this than the Madison Square Garden one.
@crazy2hazy Yes, they are literally the exact same except for a few small places up through the bridge. And yeah, I know she could hit all of these notes live, because she did during the London and Rotterdam dates of the tour, which we have video of. That's why it annoys me, because she could have hit them perfectly fine live.
I really don't know what you're hearing. There are subtle differences between this performance and the one at Madison Square Garden. You wouldn't be able to tell unless you listened very carefully, but they're not quite the same in many places.
@repenttyourself This concert was NOT dubbed and this was never released outside of Japan. The DVD release of Madison Square Garden is obviously dubbed for clarity purposes. Also, the key was lowered a semi-tone at the MSG concert, the raw footage clearly shows that.
@rekupp No... this concert actually was dubbed. Most of the dubbed vocals come straight from the MSG dubbed vocals for this song. There are a few spots where it's obvious, like in Forever and Without You, where she clearly takes a breath during the climax but the vocals don't stop. It doesn't really bother me, the raw audio & video from other concerts during the Daydream Tour show her voice didn't need to be dubbed and that she could hit those notes live.
@repenttyourself You realize that the Tokyo Dome concert was recorded from a tv special, encoded on a computer and then uploaded onto YouTube? There is a delay. IT IS LIVE. The MSG concert was dubbed over for sound quality purposes not because her voice was bad.
@repenttyourself There are bits and pieces that are dubbed but not fully. MSG's vocals a bit different than these performances in terms of the notes and how she performed it. I say a lot better. Besides she performed 3 times in Tokyo so they were able to pick and choose which is the best.
@GamerCreatorVII even if it was dubbed or lipped or woteva it's still her voice coz she wud have to sung it for them to use therefore i dont care and it's live to me
@GamerCreatorVII This is not dubbed. There are off-key moments in several performances (most notably the last run in whistle register in 'Emotions'). Why would they not dub over those? She has stated time and time again she is a perfectionist.
She sung with such ease back then, She struggles to get them notes out now but she still can... sometimes they sound croaky and not as crystal clear... but she can still sing any of these new artists under the table :D Lamb4Life <3
One thing i notice in this era 1995-1996, even the butterfly era, she really didn't do the Whistle register, with this tour she did only when performing "Emotions" but with "vision", "Anytime you need a friend", and "Dreamlover" she didn't do the whistles like she did in 1990-1993, and with the Butterfly album it was only heard WAY in the background, she really didn't start whistling agian till "Heartbreaker" came out, and then onward it was whistle all the time WHICH I LOVE!!!
@tertra114 She did a lot of whistling on emotions itself. Anytime you need a friend, she never really do the whistles ever, I think the belting is enough. Also she DID do the whistles on Dreamlover. also fantasy for that matter. About vision of love, I think it's the matter of song orders. That song is always performed towards the end at this eras so her voice is already tired. You can even check out her MTV unplugged at 92, it was the second to the last song. She didnt do it either xD
From 1993 to 1996 were her golden years of going high///i mean when she sang her songs live, she added higher parts///NOW O.M.G //// watch the video of her performing HERO in i think 2008 or 2009 at X-Factor......So Sad...But still in Luv with her voice though:)
@Adashification i don't undestend why people say that her best time was from 1993-1996!? becouse in 1990,1991&1992 her voice was soo poweful and her whistles too !!!(her best whisltes are from 1990&1991!!!!!)
If only Mariah still had this voice. seriously. her "image" now is really her. back then it was just tommy who suppressed her so much. but still. Image this or image that present, past, yada yada, Mariahs voice then was THE' Greatest and present, she doesn't have to prove the world anything anymore.
she was so cute between 1990-1996. What a voice in her prime... i miss this mariah, what's happening after... weight, compromise herself by indecent clothes and now no voice... but she's a legend
I miss this Mariah Carry!!! She had class, She was so sexy to me I had like the biggest crush on her... I miss those dayz this song...her voice gives me chills still when I hear this song!!!!!!! (Sad Face)
@Devoted2Mariah i actually think she did better in madison square garden although it's dubbed (i think tokyo dome is dubbed too we just don't have the undubbed versions) but i think that in daydream era she added those high notes like in this song in 4:03 the F#5 replaced the E5's she used to do in the beginning of her career and the F5 in dreamlover replaced the D5 because maybe the D5 and the E5 were harder for her to hold. but i do love it when she did that because it's higher and prettier.
oh my God...what a voice..i cant get enough..so effortless...pure....he face is so angelic when she sings even though the notes are extremely hard...her high notes are very unique..
fearless with that voice....ppl can do all kinds of stuff in the studio but when its time to perform on stage, they sound like nails on a chalk board. others are afraid to hit those notes they had in the studio too cuz they're scared they might mess up....but Mariah!!!! =)
you could notice her voice changing it became so much more um mature and strong shes always had a strong voice but ive always treasured her more than Whitney because her belts are strong and yet soft you can notice at 3:01 she sings it in full ;o maybe she tried to but i feel theres a change there
ooh, an early mariah carey song. of course, i didnt hear this song until later on when i was a fan of her by the time "hero" came out....so soulful and probably best only by carey.
she is a legend and even she will leave the world someday, i pray not..her music will live in our hearts ...the greatest singer of all time...more power to you Mimi
I guess to clarify a little more on my earlier post...she sounds great and very powerful here. But that huskiness and deepness in her voice isn't as prominent as in the first couple years of her career, though her belts are more powerful here but not as rich and husky. Listen to this and then a performance from 1990 or '91. So it's kind of like that tone was wearing away slowly and then like the next year after this she sounded kind of hoarse, and it's gotten worse each year after.
What baffles me is that maybe a year or less after this, around the Butterfly era, she didn't sound near as good as she does here. Something really must have damaged her voice because that's not natural. But even here, though she sounds amazing, she lost some of that husky tone and power in her belting that she started out with in the early 90s. It's almost like her voice was thinning away very slowly then all of a sudden it was nearly gone.
You are SO right! Something happened to her voice from here to the Butterfly era and I wish ...maybe all that whispering and trying to be too technical
She lost nothing from the early 90's to the mid 90's. She actually gained a lot more skill and control that she didn't have at the beginning. Did you ever see her belt out G5's or G#5's in the first 2 years of her career? No. Most of them are from this period.
@sanders8323 how can you say "all of a sudden it was nearly gone"??? have you heard her in her 2010 tour??? she has a pretty decent amount of power still, and actually still has ALL HER RANGE she used in the 90's..however she cant effortlessly hit notes these days, it takes her a LOOOT of rest.
any singer who would try to mimic or emulate the unusual sound of her belts will have a hard time...even her belts this time around has a different sound
NB: this tokyo dome concert of Mariah IS on DVD, as well as that of Madison Square Guarden. I'VE HAD IT SINCE LAST JAN. It's ina the same format as the videos watched online!
Agree. No one has been able to replicate her sound, especially in her belts. All her F5s and G5s has a rare tonal quality, which is totally unmatched. Her voice is like a butterfly, the most amazing voice among all humans, but very fragile. Love this woman and admire her as artist.
@mcdamian17 Exactly, lots of singers can belt F5 or G5, but no one can imitate her perfect tone quality in those notes. It's like a machine singing those notes, the notes are so damn PERFECT and POWERFUL.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
so what has happened to her voice? She's never been a smoker....it seemed to fade after her Emotions or Music Box Cd's....I'm glad us "older" folks were around to enjoy her back when she still had her extraordinary voice!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you're right - I can't believe it's been that long ago but Daydream was still one of her better vocal performances....she still lost her voice so very young - she was by far the best female vocalist til Christina came onboard....
Mariah was very good vocally during the Daydream Tour, but I also think she was great vocally on the Music Box and Butterfly and Charmbracelet Tours. In order, from greatest vocally to worst vocally, I would have to say...
for me, the rainbow tour was the worst. She sounded VERY tired and the damage was already pretty evident. I watched a VOL performance on that tour and there were absolutely no high notes. Not one note above C5 I believe. She riffed her way out of it.
And I think the MIMI tour was sorta better than the Music Box tour vocally, I know it sounds wierd but it was her first tour and she obviously had no experience and she didn't know what to do with the songs. But also, and most importantly, she dodged very important high notes.
just listen to the audioclips of the music box tour, the second performance in worcester she recalls as one of her best ever, listen to the emotions take of it, she whistles every critic away
I've listened to some clips of her performances in Worcester and there're not as good or as memorable as those in any of her other tours. Her voice may have been in the best condition, but she didn't sound like she could handle a tour at that time.
Not only was she at her peak vocally, but creatively as well. Her runs and licks were so unique as far as how they played with the songs chord structure here
Like many have said before and I agree that she was at her vocal peak here and no other artist could even begin to get close to her vocally . Hey, even today she's amazing!
whitney and mariah ect . should not even be but in comparison to each other...WTF they are all great why does everything have to be compared or a competition? Why can't they all be great as they are any way whether you lames think so or not
Um evenhough they want to be compare now they also can't cause their voice is so awfull now and Celine still kept her Golden voice very well..............So Celine rule.........
She was at the peak of her vocal abilities in 1996. And she was really humble back then. She's more of a spoiled diva now, unfortunately. I feel so nostalgic! NOONE could fuck with her vocal abilities back in 1996.
i REALLY REALLY love this performance, shes great, as a songwriter and a singer and a person :) so leave her alone, seeing as you obviously like hating on people with talent unlike urself
Singing is not nothing, but it's not everything either.
She writes all her songs?
Of course she does. No help whatsoever.
Don't forget the acting as well. She won an award for her acting performance in Glitter. I'll give you a bonus point if you can tell me what award it won.
It's so sad that you're so fuckin old nickbald and you're STILL so miserable. Where is your life even going? Get ready for your mid life crisis to hit hard, if you're smart enough to self-analyze.
Ohhhh!!! So damn fantastic!!!! =)

mariah's singing was her best here because she really used her voice here, but she has always able to hit G5's, in her career not just here.

F*cking AMAZING voice!

effortless notes!
prozerfina 2 years ago
What baffles me is that maybe a year or less after this, around the Butterfly era, she didn't sound near as good as she does here. Something really must have damaged her voice because that's not natural. But even here, though she sounds amazing, she lost some of that husky tone and power in her belting that she started out with in the early 90s. It's almost like her voice was thinning away very slowly then all of a sudden it was nearly gone.
sanders8323 2 years ago 4
You are SO right! Something happened to her voice from here to the Butterfly era and I wish ...maybe all that whispering and trying to be too technical
blkdevil20 1 year ago
@sanders8323
She lost nothing from the early 90's to the mid 90's. She actually gained a lot more skill and control that she didn't have at the beginning. Did you ever see her belt out G5's or G#5's in the first 2 years of her career? No. Most of them are from this period.
crazy2hazy 1 year ago
@crazy2hazy
she also belt A5! :D mariah's highest note at the beggining is F#5! :)
PreciousMariah22 1 year ago
@crazy2hazy most of the G5's and G#5's are from the first album until music box.
she didn't hit a G5 or G#5 in daydream album.
iiAmitx3 1 year ago
@iiAmitx3
I was talking about her live notes. She didn't do any chest notes above F#5 until 93.
crazy2hazy 1 year ago
@sanders8323 how can you say "all of a sudden it was nearly gone"??? have you heard her in her 2010 tour??? she has a pretty decent amount of power still, and actually still has ALL HER RANGE she used in the 90's..however she cant effortlessly hit notes these days, it takes her a LOOOT of rest.

No one can ever replace Mariah Carey. She is the best singer in the world &always will be. :)
HeyJimmyDeannn 2 years ago 108
Agree. No one has been able to replicate her sound, especially in her belts. All her F5s and G5s has a rare tonal quality, which is totally unmatched. Her voice is like a butterfly, the most amazing voice among all humans, but very fragile. Love this woman and admire her as artist.
mcdamian17 2 years ago 133
SO so true. The tone and quality is crazy.
KexZiyah 2 years ago 6
@mcdamian17 the only singer that sounds like Mariah is the one from her girlgroup Allure she created in 1997.
squirebuffy 1 year ago
@mcdamian17 Exactly, lots of singers can belt F5 or G5, but no one can imitate her perfect tone quality in those notes. It's like a machine singing those notes, the notes are so damn PERFECT and POWERFUL.

so what has happened to her voice? She's never been a smoker....it seemed to fade after her Emotions or Music Box Cd's....I'm glad us "older" folks were around to enjoy her back when she still had her extraordinary voice!!!!
TheMailgirlsandiego 2 years ago
What? The Daydream album was amazing vocally. And this performance is from the Daydream era. It's after this era her voice began to fade.

you're right - I can't believe it's been that long ago but Daydream was still one of her better vocal performances....she still lost her voice so very young - she was by far the best female vocalist til Christina came onboard....
TheMailgirlsandiego 2 years ago
christina? nothing special in her voice.

atleast she still has a strong voice - damn good vocalist for such a small girl - weird style, tho.

@TheMailgirlsandiego: Actually mariah admitted that she smoked for 6 years prior to became famous she quit because it started ruining her voice.

Arden15yr 2 years ago
Mariah was very good vocally during the Daydream Tour, but I also think she was great vocally on the Music Box and Butterfly and Charmbracelet Tours. In order, from greatest vocally to worst vocally, I would have to say...
1. Daydream Tour
2. Butterfly Tour
3. Charbracelet Tour
4. Music Box Tour
5. Rainbow Tour
6. Adventures of Mimi Tour
roniandcheese18 2 years ago 7
for me, the rainbow tour was the worst. She sounded VERY tired and the damage was already pretty evident. I watched a VOL performance on that tour and there were absolutely no high notes. Not one note above C5 I believe. She riffed her way out of it.
crazy2hazy 2 years ago
I dont know why people put thumbs down to people who speaks the truth.
alainmichael 2 years ago
And I think the MIMI tour was sorta better than the Music Box tour vocally, I know it sounds wierd but it was her first tour and she obviously had no experience and she didn't know what to do with the songs. But also, and most importantly, she dodged very important high notes.
crazy2hazy 2 years ago
just listen to the audioclips of the music box tour, the second performance in worcester she recalls as one of her best ever, listen to the emotions take of it, she whistles every critic away
dreamdate 2 years ago
I've listened to some clips of her performances in Worcester and there're not as good or as memorable as those in any of her other tours. Her voice may have been in the best condition, but she didn't sound like she could handle a tour at that time.
crazy2hazy 2 years ago
Definitely the at her best in daydream tour

Not only was she at her peak vocally, but creatively as well. Her runs and licks were so unique as far as how they played with the songs chord structure here
goodywin 2 years ago 2
I agree with you so~~~much!
b30owna 2 years ago
Like many have said before and I agree that she was at her vocal peak here and no other artist could even begin to get close to her vocally . Hey, even today she's amazing!

whitney and mariah ect . should not even be but in comparison to each other...WTF they are all great why does everything have to be compared or a competition? Why can't they all be great as they are any way whether you lames think so or not
chanel8865 2 years ago 2
Um evenhough they want to be compare now they also can't cause their voice is so awfull now and Celine still kept her Golden voice very well..............So Celine rule.........
vicshang 2 years ago
She was at the peak of her vocal abilities in 1996. And she was really humble back then. She's more of a spoiled diva now, unfortunately. I feel so nostalgic! NOONE could fuck with her vocal abilities back in 1996.

yeah she'd fuck whitney and celine in their ass:d

dreamdate 2 years ago
No. I actually like this one song of hers so I'll come back now and again.
Being talentless isn't a reason to dislike Mariah, I was just making the point that she gets all her songs and music written for her.
But she can sing. She just over-eggs the pudding sometimes.
Most of the time, actually.
I'm sure she's probably a very nice person.
Probably.

I can compare Christina to Mariah.
They are both overrated, talentless but good looking manufactured singers who believe their own hype.
They sing 20 notes per word when 1 will do.
They've both mutilated their bodies with ridiculously oversized silicone implants.
That's all I can think of for now...
nickbaldeagle01 2 years ago
Talentless?hahaha and you have to say that on one of the most amazing live performance of Mariah........Seriously she is pure talent.

She can sing. Granted.
I can plumb in a combination boiler and a house full of radiators. Which would you rather have in -40 degrees?
Can she write her own music?
Probably not. Can she play an instrument? Hmmm.
Talented? Well, no.
She can sing. That's not an indicator of talent. She was lucky to be married to a record producer at a young age.
She ditched him once other people made her famous with their songwriting and musical skills.
nickbaldeagle01 2 years ago
I'm sorry but singing is also a talent.............And SHE WRITTES all her songs, WTF with the songwritters. You know nothing on Mariah!
And you don' tknow if she played an instrument.....
So for you singing is nothing? But writting is everything?
cinqoctaves 2 years ago 6
Singing is not nothing, but it's not everything either.
She writes all her songs?
Of course she does. No help whatsoever.
Don't forget the acting as well. She won an award for her acting performance in Glitter. I'll give you a bonus point if you can tell me what award it won.
Go on now, off to Google...
nickbaldeagle01 2 years ago
Sometimes she co-wrottes, but miost of the time she writtes her stuff by herself!
And she sing like a godess!
So yeah she is undoubtly talented!
Seriously who the fuck are you LMAO!
cinqoctaves 2 years ago 3
you dont understand her writing process. The lyrics are written by her. The melodies USUALLY are NOT. That is where you made your mistake.

It's so sad that you're so fuckin old nickbald and you're STILL so miserable. Where is your life even going? Get ready for your mid life crisis to hit hard, if you're smart enough to self-analyze.
