  • plain ol epic

  • well i definitely need some improving on the english horn

  • cor angelais? funny i've never even heard of that and i'm quite well versed in all things musical

  • oh wow! Her tonguing is amazing! I am cringing at the thought of attempting that on my oboe ;)

  • i played oboe for our schools musical and i was in the pit, it had cor anglais parts but we couldnt get a hold of one, i wish we had gotten a hold of one, the cor anglais has a beautiful sound and very unique

  • i sounds like similar to the trumpet but its a wood wind lol

  • who the hell plays this thing?

  • @LouieOmega lots of people do. but usually many oboists only double on the cor anglais (or english horn) and its not usually a primary instrument. just happens to be hers...

  • @LouieOmega most 2nd Oboists and most professional Oboists!!! Who wouldn't!!! :)

  • @annakchambers Oh well ive never seen this thing. lol but I play horn so ill stick to mine. To each its own i guess.

  • @LouieOmega hey Louie, horn is good too! U shld check out some other Cor Anglais music if you're interested.. it's gorgeous when played well, and there's loads of awesome music written for it :) tc..

  • WOW your amazing!!

  • Lovely playing. I wish I could hear her play a real EH piece instead of this Tan Dun Eroica mutation.

  • what is a cor anglais

  • The cor anglais is also called the English horn. It is a double reed instrument similar to the oboe, but larger and lower pitched.

  • cor anglais is french for english horn....lolz

  • @keith8404 Well duh!!!

  • @MollzKav - dragonfly3895 asked "what is a cor anglais"; I answered. Not everyone understands French or is even passingly familiar with the instrument. I'd rather provide answers - even one's that may seem obvious to some - than be a smart-aleck douche.

  • Beautiful. I just need to work on my tone. I have a feeling my tone may be "suckish" because of the reed. Sure everyone blames it on the reed, but I don't know how to make my own reeds, and the brand of reed i'm using for my english horn is a brand of reed that i do not like using on my oboe.

  • Absolutely fantastic teaching! I love the sound of the Oboe although I do not play it. The Dvorak Largo, New World Symphony is exceptionally wonderful! Keep up the great work!

  • Maybe you just can't listen much, and probably can't learn much either, pinche mocoso. Shut up and learn!

  • dude...just shut up, this isn't really a "playing" video its an imformal video...

  • If you close your eyes and just listen, it kind of sounds like a violin.

  • Hmm... Cor Anglais = Alto clarinet of oboe world. intriguing

  • these segments are most excellent! i only wish the audio were louder- at max volume on computer and on player, it's still barely audible.

:( doesn't stop me working it over and over, tho!

  • This sounds so much smoother than an oboe. I can't stand oboes!

  • Am I not allowed to have an opinion!? Gosh all I said was I don't like oboes. If I would have said something like oboe players are stupid, I would understand getting 4 down thumb thingys! Not saying I don't like an instrument! I hate clarinets, but I have alot of friends who play them! My drum major plays flute, but she is swapping to oboe, but that doesn't mean I'm going to hate her for that!

  • Haha now we know what professional musicians think about during rehearsal! xD

  • Excellent tone and description of various elements of playing.

  • ha she takes a proper pause and looks down like shes looking at a teleprompter

  • There was a midget in the room making rude gestures

  • English horn. The bass oboe is bigger and plays an octave below the oboe, while the english horn only plays a 5th below. You'd hear a bass oboe in, among other things, Saturn from the Planets by Holst.

  • In the Ne Yo Mad Timothy Moloi, is this a Howarth Cor Anglais?

  • Yes - it's an old S2 (with open holes).

  • I have NEVER seen one of those before!!....

  • We cor players do play things other than Dvorak, you know... >0(

  • @violoboist I hope this includes Warlock's Curlew......;-)

  • First time i see this vid, i was sure she will play Dvorak The new world II

    Beautiful melody

  • Actually, I've heard that confusing angled with english is actually not how english horn (cor anglais) got it's name, though this is what many people believe.

  • Anyone know what make english horn she plays?

  • is it a cor anglais solo on 'handbags and gladrags'??

  • Not if you mean the Stereophonics' version - that's an oboe.

  • Thank You. My saw and your Cor Anglais must have about the same range. It was hard finding music to play for video II. This music works great. Of course I love it now. Even though I don't have reeds or blow I used your class for my master class. I called a local community symphony conductor and he didn't take me seriously. Another one asked for an audition. Please suggest other pieces like this without staccato. Thank you so much.

  • You could try the Roman Carnival Overture by Berlioz or if you're really ambitious, how about the off stage solo from Act 3 of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde? Good luck!

  • Thank you so very much for doing this. As a composer, I am relieved to learn that Tan Dun also causes "hypoxia" among the woodwinds :) All these videos are wonderful springboards for any composer needing to awaken his thinking on each instrument and its capabilities. Brava, and thank you again.

  • Look closely at Paul Mc Cartney on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper album. He's holding a Cor Anglais.

  • Listen to a song called L'homme Arme. Then listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts club.

  • I listened to L'homme Arme and it sound more like Revolution No. 9 than Sgt. Pepper to me. It might resemble the very beginning? I'm not a musican, just a huge Beatles/Paul McCartney fan. Please explain the connection from your point of view.

  • L'homme Arme is a renaissance period piece tha has been used as the cantus firmus (base) of many, MANY pieces in history. Sgt. Pepper was the only song I knew of in the modern era that used this piece, but there is likely many more, and also many pieces that use small pieces of it.

  • Question for Cor Anglais cognoscenti: There is a cor anglais solo in Tristan und Isolde (I think). Does anyone know what act & scene it is? Is it on youtube? Haven't found it yet. Thanks a bundle if you know.

  • The big EH solo starts the 3rd act of Tristan und Isolde.

  • Enter this in search bar: iHmxdloeQjw (that's the video ID), which brings you to Act 3, Part 1. Solo starts after the prelude, at 4:35, ends 7:25. (Anyway, you should't miss out the Prelude, which is extremely beautiful). That's the slow part. The fast part is about 30 minutes later, but I could only find videos where it has been replaced with a trumpet... (dullards!)

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE :)

I have played "The new world" as a duet.

    Check it out..hihi :)

  • wat is this instrument?

  • its called either the cor anglais or the english horn

  • I wish I had a teacher like her... She explains very clearly and to the point, makes it all easier.

  • We call it "cor anglais" because, it is shaped differently of the oboe, so they call it "cor anglé" in French

    "anglé" turns out to "anglais"

sorry for the english errors :S I hope you understand anyway

  • Is it a US thing that we call it an English Horn?

  • Sort of. I've heard many different opinions, the one I like most went like this:

The English Horn used to (circa 1800) have (about) a 140 degree angle in the middle of the body. The word "anglais" means 'angle' and between the French manufactures an the English players the name was mistranslated from 'angled' to English somewhere in there.

    Anyone else have different stories?

  • Ok... any idea how \the French horn got its name?

  • Music history prof told us once... don't remember the story, but it actually is a Bohemian horn.

  • Anglais means English.

However, anglé means angled and they're pronouced almost the same.

  • I've been told recently that 'angle' has never meant angled either in old or in modern french. The latest theory is that it 'angle' refers to angels, and specifically to the curved instruments they play in many baroque images.

  • she's absolutely incredible.

  • 100 stars well done.....!!!!!!

  • so what is the difference between this instrument and the oboe?

  • It's a lower pitch, different shape, different range, uses different reeds, but its still similair.

  • never even heard of this instrument but it has a beautiful sound!!

  • Maybe you havent heard OF this instrument, but you probably have heard IT a lot. It's a staple of almost every melancholy romantic film music tune. (It's all over the place in Lord of the Ring, John Williams's music, etc.) And, of course, the theme from Dvorak's "New World" symphony that she plays in the video.

  • It's also called "English Horn", btw.

  • Yeah, "Cor Anglais," get it?

  • Wow, I love this. Listening to excellent musicians talk about music... makes me really, really, really, happy.

  • omg yes.

  • I know I love it too!

  • a wonderful musician

  • And a good teacher for sure.

  • All of these LSo pieces are fantastic. Thanks Google and LSO. WT
