Yes you need the hacking tool. Without it, you'd just be changing the registry entries that point to something that doesn't exist. The purpose of changing the text is using a different exe for the change, and not the original.

Also, did you put the file you edited in the Windows Folder and rename the shell to the edited explorer file? Seeing as you have access to this video, I suggest you watch it again. I've given each and every step as thorough as possible.
Nice vid man - you do know there is a MUCH MUCH MUCH simpler way - on ResHacker open explorer.exe yeah... and then open up 'String Table' then open '37' and change where it says 'start' to whatever - compile it and there you go! :D

Ah fair enough. What I do is save a the ResHacker file as 'nathanexplorer.exe' (reason being my names Nathan :]) and then make my computer run that at start up instead of the normal 'explorer.exe'. But I do toatally see where you are coming from :) So a 5* to your video sir!

You just make a copy of the explorer file. That's really it. Now, "Backin' it up" would require a rather jiggly behind and skrillz at expert breakdancing.
Windows XP SP 2 is what I have. This video was made with SP 2 installed. Is your computer not showing anything when you change it, or have you changed it back? I included the steps necessary to putting everything back in the event that you mess up something.
Once you edit your explorer file that you backed up, just put your modified file into the C:\Windows folder.Then go to your start bar, select run, and type in "regedit". Go to HKEY_LOCAL_KEY\Software\Microsoft\Window s NT\Winlogon and change the shell to the modded filename.

i had make a backup for explorer.exe (original) in my D:\ path, and than i had edit with the resource hacker and saved as :lupu.exe in C:\WINDOWS.
In c:\windows it is the explorer.exe too.
The result: is not workink. Appears blank :)
