  • It is finished and available on DVD off my website underthehollywoodsign

  • please finish it!

  • I would love to see this entire film.

Which movie are the clips at 6:03, 6:23, etc. taken from?

  • @shuckslbj Wait, is it "Hollywood Sign Girls"? I just found that. Were you involved in that also?

  • @shuckslbj

    No

  • @shuckslbj You can order a DVD off my website The b&w clips are from my short film, "Peg Entwistle's Last Walk." You can see it on my channel.

  • great videos. I will be vacationing in Holywood next week, and literally 1 week from RIGHT now, I'll be taking photos of the sign. Now... to find beachwood canyon for the best angle.

  • is there an actual city of hollywood, or is it just a neighborhood?

  • Hollywood was a farming community from the 1880s until its incorporation as a city in 1903. It remained independent until 1910, when it annexed itself to Los Angeles in order to gain access to its water supply. Although it has been part of Los Angeles for a century, it still feels like a town in many ways.

  • Hi, very nice documentary, I too would really like to see the rest, fascinating place.

I wonder if perhaps in your research you ever came across information about a director named John 'jack' Mcdermott? circa 1930's although he lived further west in the Hollywood Hills. He had a *very* unusual house built from various movie sets and there were other unusual aspects to his life and property. It's a long shot i know, but just perhaps you have knowledge not overtly mentioned in the segment.

    Cheers

  • I've never heard of him, but his house sounds amazing. I had to limit myself to Beachwood; even so the documentary ran nearly two hours. I cut 40 minutes out for the TV version and will probably have to cut some more.

  • Hey Nicee Video

    I Was sitting here entertained

    AWESOME GUYS!

    LOVE IT

  • thanks!

  • I'm curious -- when did the sign transform from "Hollywoodland" to "Hollywood?" Is it the same sign, or was the whole thing replaced?

  • The "land" section was removed in 1949, when the Sign and the land under it were given to the City of Los Angeles. The Sign continued to deteriorate until 1978, when it was totally rebuilt with private funds raised by Hugh Hefner. The current Sign is exactly the same size and design as the original but built of steel instead of wood and sheet metal.

  • Nice job! I'm enticed!

  • Thank you for the Hollywood sign history. It's always had a marked memory in my mind since 1963 when I moved to Los Angeles area. Very well reported with the horses, etc. I remember my first ride by horse back from that location to the "Rose Bowl". I now live in Florida, but the memories will always remain. Thank you, Mamie Justice

  • you got lucky that you live in Miami damn damn!!

  • Bravo!

  • Excellent job, Hope! You capture the mystique and spirituality of "the Hollywood sign" and its intriguing history. I've seen "Under the Sign" and it is powerful. Keep up the great work. -- Carol S.

  • This is such a great preview, and now I can't wait to see the documentary. Hope Anderson is a brilliant director with a feel for what interests people. This clip shows the interesting balance between the lore of the sign and the reality of the neighborhood, then and now. BTW, what ever happened to LAND?

  • Thank you! As for the "land," it was removed when the City of Hollywood took over the Sign in the late 1940s.

  • Wow! Watching the preview really made me want to see this film - I'm so impressed!! Great job Hope!

  • Brilliant! A masterwork. I really can't wait to see it. And I am in no way biased.

    James Logan

  • Congratulations, Hope! What a wonderful preview of the magical place we call Hollywoodland! We so look forward to seeing the entire documentary.

    Best wishes,

    Joy and Len Efron
