Hi everyone, its me Dennis Woodruff. Did you know that my grandfather S. H. Woodruff built the hollywood sign in 1923. and was the developer for hollywood land, i was just featured in Los Angeles Magazine in June as Mr. Hollywood. If you would like to get my movies and especially Mr. Hollywood landmark movies. You can google search my name Dennis Woodruff and you'll find my name at the top of the page. I make great films and I am a great actor...so they say. Order all my films today.
great videos. I will be vacationing in Holywood next week, and literally 1 week from RIGHT now, I'll be taking photos of the sign. Now... to find beachwood canyon for the best angle.
Hollywood was a farming community from the 1880s until its incorporation as a city in 1903. It remained independent until 1910, when it annexed itself to Los Angeles in order to gain access to its water supply. Although it has been part of Los Angeles for a century, it still feels like a town in many ways.
Hi, very nice documentary, I too would really like to see the rest, fascinating place.
I wonder if perhaps in your research you ever came across information about a director named John 'jack' Mcdermott? circa 1930's although he lived further west in the Hollywood Hills. He had a *very* unusual house built from various movie sets and there were other unusual aspects to his life and property. It's a long shot i know, but just perhaps you have knowledge not overtly mentioned in the segment.
I've never heard of him, but his house sounds amazing. I had to limit myself to Beachwood; even so the documentary ran nearly two hours. I cut 40 minutes out for the TV version and will probably have to cut some more.
The "land" section was removed in 1949, when the Sign and the land under it were given to the City of Los Angeles. The Sign continued to deteriorate until 1978, when it was totally rebuilt with private funds raised by Hugh Hefner. The current Sign is exactly the same size and design as the original but built of steel instead of wood and sheet metal.
"Under the Hollywood Sign" is just about done and will be screened privately this month, after which I'll update you on its whereabouts. Thanks to all who watched the preview!
The film was screened privately last week; I'm getting ready to submit it to festivals and will post info on its whereabouts. Thanks so much for your interest!
Richard and I took a peek at your Beachwood preview....magical!!! We were both "Beachwoodians"...I lived on Beachwood since 1943...through fire and flood!! We would love to attend your screening. Please confirm.

thanks! I've gotten a flood of new information and have been doing more interviews, so I'm aiming for the end of May for completion. It will probably be shown in festivals first; more on that as we move into distribution.
As a Beachwooder on Glen Green, I give you great kudos for your wonderful preview of what ptomises to be a very enlightening film. Looking forward to it. :)
Thank you for the Hollywood sign history. It's always had a marked memory in my mind since 1963 when I moved to Los Angeles area. Very well reported with the horses, etc. I remember my first ride by horse back from that location to the "Rose Bowl". I now live in Florida, but the memories will always remain. Thank you, Mamie Justice
Excellent job, Hope! You capture the mystique and spirituality of "the Hollywood sign" and its intriguing history. I've seen "Under the Sign" and it is powerful. Keep up the great work. -- Carol S.
This is such a great preview, and now I can't wait to see the documentary. Hope Anderson is a brilliant director with a feel for what interests people. This clip shows the interesting balance between the lore of the sign and the reality of the neighborhood, then and now. BTW, what ever happened to LAND?
It is finished and available on DVD off my website underthehollywoodsign

I'm curious -- when did the sign transform from "Hollywoodland" to "Hollywood?" Is it the same sign, or was the whole thing replaced?
