@ILOVETHE1700s Thank you. Although Matchlock Muskets are rather doomed in the Rain, Wheellocks and Flintlocks perform, though not perfectly, quite well even in bad Weather, when the Uder knows what to do. Many Reenactors dont, for some Reason, menage to fire in the Rain, but I'd bet my Behind its because a Lack of Training.
The whole 33rd Regiment re-enactment group is a really excellent outfit, led by a first class sergeant. They are accurate, very well drilled, and if you want to see how it should be done go and see them in action. If you Google 33rd Regiment you'll find them. This video clip was shot actually on the battle field at Waterloo in June 2009
It's hard to imagine that a weapon like this, that takes a full minute to fire once, was actually more effective in battle than a bow-and-arrow or crossbow.
@kvn8907 The great thing about the musket was that, whereas archers were extremely skilled and trained from a very young age, foot soldiers could be trained in musketry probably in less than a week. And well trained infantry could get off three aimed shots a minute.
@johndivall Not crossbowmen. A crossbow was simple to use, simple to manufacture, and quick to train on. So if it's simply an issue of training required, the musket beats out bow and arrow, but not crossbowmen.
@johndivall The Effectiveness of the Bow is highly overrated, as is the Musket very often highly underrated. Also, The Fairytale of Archers being difficult and expansive to train and musketeers being very cheaply and easily got by is Rubbish.
@FinalFreek It is a great Misconception. The Powder resides in a nice and dry Leatherpouch inside a massive, dry Block of wood, mainly Beech. When taken out, it is in your hand, and it is contained in the pan and Barrel safely. If you get a drop of Rain on the filled Pan while open or you stand too lonf in the rain loaded without precautions against rain, water will turn the priming into a smudge. BUT, it takes few precaution to prevent. Greasing the arms helps a lot, as does proper body position
Good morning from England! Glad you enjoyed the video clip. I hope to add another one in a few weeks time so take another look about the end of July or the beginning of August- of it works it will be spectacular!

See? Muskets do fire in the rain. Its probably only if you leave the pan open too long. People always seem to under estimate muskets. Sad.

I find it quite funny how the sergeant is shorter than all of them, then he has the spear/lance held in that comical way, it made me smile.
