The opening of this work should startle the listener, even shock him or her, but I don't think Barber lived THIS long.
The real disappointment for me, however, was the tempo. Slow is good for the adagio, but the bracketing movements should be taken at a contrasting pace.
Still, it's good to find a group that acknowledges that there is more to Barber's quartet than the Adagio.

@5610winston Yes the tempo is quite suprising. I played this entire quartet and I absolutely hated the second movement though...
