This reminds me of a similar incident at KSFO. I'm sure I'm getting the numbers reversed and the exact words wrong, it went something like this.
United 52 San Francisco tower, cleared for takeoff. Tower, United 52..should we taxi around United 62, or wait our turn?

That's an easy mistake to make. You look out your window and see 2 United planes. They don't have their flight #'s painted on the side...

I don't doubt that one bit, which is why I think it's good that most controllers would pronounce it as
(example) five two instead of fifty-two.
I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often with UAL 52 & UAL 62.
