2:28 is either a glitch or inconsistent from one version to another since I remember the 4-2 warp to 8-1 being accessed via a vine and in SM All-Stars the pipe he took will only lead you to a coin area and then return you to 4-2 without warping you. Not hatin' but genuinely curious about the inconsistency.

@blakfloyd Its a glitch you can perform by sending Mario as far right of the screen as possible. The screen still sees the programming of the secret exit and the pipe carries that use of the secret, taking you to the warp zone, rather than to the bonus area.

@cowswirl At 2:19 I start this trick. I tap left just before the jump and quickly hold right again so I still have speed. Then I do a few more simple backwards jumps into the pipes. You'll see the Mario is facing left when he jumps. If you look closely, you'll see that Mario ends up further on the right side of the screen. So, the screen is still in a place where if you exit via pipe/vine, it'll take you to the warp zone. If I moved too far right, the pipe would take me to its usual location.
