@Devoto2 Hello! Thanks for the nice comment. I get my CarbOthello pastell pencils at Dick Blick here on-line. You can buy them by the set, box of each color or one at at time. I purchased the largest set then buy them as I need them. If you do purchase the set you may as well get extra black and white as you will use those the most. Good luck! :)) Roby
Once again, a wonderful rendering..I suppose the question the begs to be asked.... where do you get the patience? I imagine its a skill that has been built up by years of work. I find myself getting too tense with very detailed work.... wanting to fight between extreme detail, and a looser form...but again, you have done an outstanding piece...thankyou for sharing!!
@Stryder1100 Hello! Thank you very much for the great comment! I don't know about the patience thing, it's just who I am. I want to make it look as real as possible so I do what it takes to make that happen. It really is a personal thing and there is nothing wrong with doing hyper-realism or loose, it's just what I love. Thanks again for the great comment. :)) Roby
very pretty. Would you mind sharing where you get your reference photos from? thanks. That is the problem that I have--find good references. I've seen alot online (in forums), but most lack the closeup detail needed (for me) to get a good result. Detail is sooo important. I would love to get my hands on a Wolf photograph, but so hard to find.
@customanimalart Hello~ The reference photo for my zebra painting I took myself. I try to take my own reference shots but when I can't I get permission from the photographer. I contact them and usually they will have a larger file that they will send to you. Sometimes you have to pay a fee and sometime not but ALWAYS get permission. If you have a zoo in your area or fairly close to where you live you can get good reference shots that way. Good luck!! :) Roby
Roby, yet another work of art worth all the appreciation it can possibly get! Horses are difficult to start with, and to capture a Zebra with such perfection is near impossible for pretty much anyone BUT you! You have captured the essence of this animal beautifully! I wouldn't be able to do it. I can just about manage a horse.
One question about the Carbo's, I have trouble with them as the lead keeps breaking in the pencil. Do I just have a bad batch or is that a known problem with them?
@castleguardian Hello! Awww, thanks so much for your lovely comments, made my day! There are two reasons for breaking leads. Either they have been dropped breaking the pigment inside or your sharpener is dull. The latter is usually the culprit. Just as soon as my sharpener starts breaking "leads" I return it for a new one. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric that I get a Office Max, get the warrenty, well worth it! Let me know how it goes.... Thank you so much again! :)) Roby
OMG - I have just discovered you! Truly faultless work. You are so blessed and you have inspired me to create more work of my own. What pencils do you use?
@SexyHaras Hello! Thank you very much for your very nice comment! I use CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with stick pastels. Some of my favorite brands are Sennelier, Unison, Schmincke and Rembrandt. Thanks again! :)) Roby
Between the beautiful music and watching you make these amazing works of art, brings tears to my eyes and my heart melt in awe and admiration for your work.
@ToboeWolfsRain Hello! Your English is just fine! What a great comment, thank you so much! This zebra was more time consuming than I thought it would be but it was fun too! After my pre sketch I had to mark the black stripes with dots just to keep me on track of where I was. It was worth all of the work! I'm glad that you like the video too. Thanks again! :))
@iemscifi Hi...thanks!! Yes, I use the Bristol Board 500 series cold press vellum. I buy it by the sheet. You can get either the 10 ply or 20 ply which ever you like. I have a mat cutter so I cut pieces to fit the size of painting that I'm doing. I get it at Dick Blick but I can't link it, sorry youtube won't let me link but here is the number. :)) 13305-1002 500 Series Board 22" x 30" 10-ply. Good luck!
I absolutely just love watching you work. It's so inspiring! And you are without a doubt, a fantastic artist! Thank you so much for sharing your process with everyone. I am still a big fan of your video's and continue to always watch and wait for more! Keep up the great work!
@liquiddragonpodcast Hello Andy!! Thanks so much for your great commnets, that's just wonderful!! As long as I am getting positive comments from generous people like you I'll keep taking the time to do them. Thanks again for your continued support!!! :)))
and this one????? Oh my God, it's AMAZING, splendid work!! I'd see your videos all the time... now YouTube is also on XBox 360, the game console (I love the videogames! ^_^) so I can see your videos on my 52" tv!!!!!! hihihihihihihi :))
@EnFiNiTeART Woo Hoo!!!! Boy that's big!! Thank you so very much for your great comments regarding my work, that's so nice of you! I can't imagine seeing my video on such a large screen. I think it's great that you want to watch them so I'll say thanks again and enjoy your XBox too!!! :)))
Beautiful detail as always. I love how you created smooth values despite the zebra's difficult pattern. I've been meaning to ask: What kinds of pastels do you use? Are they the dry kind or the oil kind?
@SolsticeSong1 Hello again!! Yeah, this one was difficult especially my pencil drawing. I had to use pencil dots on the black stripes to keep me on track of what stripe was what, it gets confusing with all of those lines! I use soft "dry" pastels, no oil pastels and my pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils. The brands that I use the most are Schmincke, Unison, Sennilier, Rambrandt to name a few. Thanks again! :))
you are still too amazing!!! I have a question, where do you get your references? if online, do you use a certain website? and please keep uploading, I look soooo forward for them!:)
@CHloE748 Hello and thanks!! I shoot most of my own references but when I can't I ALWAYS get permission or pay to use a reference. I am a copyright stickler and would never use a photo that I didn't have permission to use. :))
Bravo, Roby! That must have taken forever to do. Don't think I would attempt that! It is so life-like. It is hard doing black/white combos. Thanks for another 'gem'. :-)
@creativebeam1 Thanks so much! I worked on it about a month but some days would be only an hour or so and others all day, hence the length of this video! We had to edit a lot. Merry Christmas to you too!! ;))
