What about the only person who has a right to it is the person who originally came along in the stone age and camped on it? That follows your logic somewhat. Whoever makes a HOME of somewhere, who lives in it with LOVE and respect for their neighbours, that should be who has a right to the place - all else being equal.

@Saighton The people who have a right to the house are the people who built it or bought it. My point was that it is a perversion of government to use their monopoly of force to guarantee people the right to someone else's product. It's the same idea as not stealing.

@underdg22 Sure, I don't steal, for example, but I would squat under the right circumstances - where the building is empty and the owner isn't going to use it (not some family, but some holding company or property investor sitting on it for years, or something). There's only so much land in the world, we have to use it wisely before ANYTHING else, or perhaps start war again to reduce population levels to sustainable levels. Friendly squatting isn't bad.

@Saighton I agree we all gotta do what it takes to survive. However, society can't really function without property rights. I agree that it'd be stupid for some holding company to sit on a property, it would make much more sense for them to rent it out. What usually stops people from having affordable housing are zoning restrictions and rent control. Zoning restriction limit the supply by preventing building in certain places and rent controls make new construction uneconomical.

It's the basic example they use in any Econ 101 class you take about the problems with setting prices. For zoning restrictions google "Zoning Laws Destroy Communities" or read Thomas Sowell's chapter called "Urban Facts and Fallacies" in his book Economic Facts and Fallacies. Or just use common sense, zoning is a RESTRICTIVE measure.
