I wasn't a big fan of platoon. Sure it won oscars but I often find films that win oscars don't win my heart (can't belive I said that, I'm going to vomit!). Some oscar winning films I like, others I don't. 'nuff said.

So you get drug users, gang members, and people who only care about there own skin, and none of them wanna be there. On top of that, they got ZERO support from home aswell. They also had ROE's they had to obey. I had an ROTC instructor that was in Nam, he said they would see the NVA moving past there firebase, and they weren't allowed to shoot at them because they weren't getting shot at themselves.
"I think now looking back, we did not fight the enemy, we fought ourselves." It's increadible ironic and trully sad how Charlie Sheen's own words from this scene describes, & narates his own life events. Sheen is an amazingly talented actor. I sincerely hope that Charlie gets the help he needs, & finds the will to overcome his currunt & on-going issues. Not only for his own sake, but especially for the sake of his children. I'm a long time fan of all of the Sheen's wish them all the very best.

@kerminator29 - this ending segment misses one important scene which happens RIGHT BEFORE the beginning of this segment.
That scene shows what looks like an APC with what appears to be a NAZI flag on top. Second thing that happens is that you see a guy come out with a German shephard dog. It's as if Oliver Stone was trying to say that American troops were like Nazis.
Also, notice that the beer-drinking redneck soldiers are shown as "bad" guys while pot-smoking hippy soldiers are "good" guys.
This is an example of a fallen angel. Charlie had his rise to being an actor back in this day and now has been a fallen angel due to his fuck ups he made in his life. I just hope he does get ass kicking rehab and look back saying "What the hell was I thinking: I'm over that now. I pray i never do that again"

I will never forget the mood in the theater when my buddy and I saw a "sneak preview" of this movie a week or so before it was released. Starting with the 1st fight scene the audience was silent, stunned, with dropped jaws. Whether you believe it portrays this war or not, no previous Vietnam movie had showed the war in this way. This was nothing like Deer, Apacolypse, Coming Home, or Southern Comfort. My guess is that when those were released they still had to tread lightly on subject manor.

In Apocalypse, Martin Sheen's character was a veteran special forces operator, and war scarred him to the point where he felt at home in the jungles, and craved for a mission, than it tells the story of his mission to assassinate Col. Kurtz, and in the end how it psychologically affected him.

@Snako85 The only similarities they have is the setting. This film is Oliver Stone's response to films like "The Green Berets" which portrayed us being there as a lovey-dovey experience. He wanted to show the grim reality of what it was like being there, and the hell soldiers had to put up with, and not just the VC and the NVA.
"Apocalypse Now" is a retelling of "Heart of Darkness," with a setting that would appeal better to the American public. You can tell a lot just from when it came out.

@kerminator29 - this ending segment misses one important scene which happens RIGHT BEFORE the beginning of this segment.
That scene shows what looks like an APC with what appears to be a NAZI flag on top. Second thing that happens is that you see a guy come out with a German shephard dog. It's as if Oliver Stone was trying to say that American troops were like Nazis.
Also, notice that the beer-drinking redneck soldiers are shown as "bad" guys while pot-smoking hippy soldiers are "good" guys.

I will never forget the mood in the theater when my buddy and I saw a "sneak preview" of this movie a week or so before it was released. Starting with the 1st fight scene the audience was silent, stunned, with dropped jaws. Whether you believe it portrays this war or not, no previous Vietnam movie had showed the war in this way. This was nothing like Deer, Apacolypse, Coming Home, or Southern Comfort. My guess is that when those were released they still had to tread lightly on subject manor.

@cowboysfan782008 Compared to Platoon, Apocalypse Now was a bit different. This shows how the war changed Charlie Sheen's character because he witnessed the brutality of war. In Apocalypse, Martin Sheen's character was a veteran special forces operator, and war scarred him to the point where he felt at home in the jungles, and craved for a mission, than it tells the story of his mission to assassinate Col. Kurtz, and in the end how it psychologically affected him.

@Snako85 The only similarities they have is the setting. This film is Oliver Stone's response to films like "The Green Berets" which portrayed us being there as a lovey-dovey experience. He wanted to show the grim reality of what it was like being there, and the hell soldiers had to put up with, and not just the VC and the NVA.
"Apocalypse Now" is a retelling of "Heart of Darkness," with a setting that would appeal better to the American public. You can tell a lot just from when it came out.
