I was allways told that this tradition coming from southern Catalunya from around 200 years has everything to do with being a silent protest against spain. From the 1640's to the 1730's Catalunya raised several times against spanish domination almost everytime ending in disaster for us. I think that these castells were a way to express our feelings of not being absolutely defeted and our people pulling together ( men women kids all ages)to rebuild the country as many times as necessary.somiserem
@prettypollution it's not all about taxes, it is also about culture, language, and self-determination. Most of catalan people does not feel identified with "hispanity" and this is the main reason why we want to be an independent country.
No, really, It's all about stupidity. You are so wrong kid. Most of the catalan people feel also Spaniard and only a noisy bunch of rednecks like you feel the need to claim to the world that you are soooo diferent and sooo good... It's pathetic. Really.
We have our land, our culture, our language, our festivities, our politicians, our sense as a country,... we don't need anymore, we don't need an oppressive state, we don't need spain. And we don't want to be a part of spain.
Saying "excentric" I mean things/ideas like Gaudi, Dali, Miro, Picasso (partially!), etc.
"Tomatina" and "Fallas" (valencian-catalan!) count as well. Of course, I see it with the western eyes - otherwise it is, probably, the Japanese or Chinese. Anyway, thanks!
point 1: This tradition originated in the southern part of Catalonia at the end of the 18th century. More specifically in Valls.
point 2: the term "Ancient" is subjective... what must be considered "ancient" and what not in your expert opinnion may I ask? I guess next time we need to "catalogue" something we better ask you first, right? ¬¬

I can say that not all children can climb that high, have to be a children with special character and hability, and his or her parents aswell need to have an open and free mind. If you're fear your children aswell. That's the way it is.

My point is that no father (or mother) has the right to expose their children to a dangerous situation like this just for fun or "tradition". I've seen many "castells" and most of the kids (7 or 8 yo) have the fear reflected on their faces before they go up. It has nothing to do with a boring or funny world. It has to do with defending those that can't defend by themselves

I wish I had been involved in "castells" when I was little but my "mum" was spanish and she didn't let me be catalan. How f****d are the spanish that think that have the god-given right to go around telling what people are and how they have to feel. For much that I love my mum she has allways been an example of how the spanish have behaved with us: like fascists!!!!
Those who do that are very incivilized. The little kids going up are exposing their lifes and nobody is taking care, not even the government or their own parents. Much more disgusting than bullfighting. Ban this, please!
Incivilizised ta mare. I disagree in total with your note.
A castell is a human tower traditionally built during festivals in many places in Catalonia, Spain. There is 1 castell fallen over 1000's built. and no one dies NEVER.
Parents have to sign an official document as their children can participate in these cultural groups.
You don't mess up with my country tradition and I won't mess up on yours.
The "anxaneta" (the last child to go up) wears a helmet. Besides, the public that watch, acts as a cushion for the tower. As much people the best must envolve the whole tower for in case the tower falls. Check te video again and you'll see everybody is attached to it. The castellers (people of the tower) learn and practice how to fall and not to hurt.
Hola!
Although the castle fell, the kid (anxaneta) managed to get to the top, so it's considered half a victory. Since it was the first time this kind of castle was completely built, it's a unique and worth of celebration moment.
The sad truth is that in fact there HAD been even a deadly accident during the last year, a young kid died...she would have survived with a helmet on.
Yes, one deadly accident in 2006 and another in... let me think... yes, I believe around 1987. How much kids have dead because a home accident in those 19 years? Please, be concerned with things you understand and only when you have something interesting to say.

Although there is always some risk, there have been only a few serious injured people over the years. The fall in this video (falling like a "block") its quite safe. BTW, after an accident some years ago children now always wear a helmet. Typical injuries building "castells" aren't worse than those you can suffer from playing any team sport.
how much do you know about physics... You never achieve a high velocity and deceleration when the tower crumbles on its self. Sure if somebody jumped of the top, but even then you decelerating over at least 30cm when land on the people below, where as decelerating over less than an inch on concrete with stiff legs.
Watching this made me think.

nowadays all children wear helmet and hardly ever they suffer any pain.

I think I better translate your interesting post to people who doesn't understand Spanish. You said:
- Sons of the big b**** the Catalans and Catalonia. Long live to Franco, f***! Filthy trash.
Thank you again for your demonstration of politeness.

Although there is always some risk, there have been only a few serious injured people over the years. The fall in this video (falling like a "block") its quite safe. BTW, after an accident some years ago children now always wear a helmet. Typical injuries building "castells" aren't worse than those you can suffer from playing any team sport.

sure...falling from 50feet up is just as safe as Basketball...u know how much BS that is -_-
Strongbadunit2 4 years ago
Hmm.. I was thinking about football and soccer. But yes, it hardly goes worse than some contusions.
orique 4 years ago
how much do you know about physics... You never achieve a high velocity and deceleration when the tower crumbles on its self. Sure if somebody jumped of the top, but even then you decelerating over at least 30cm when land on the people below, where as decelerating over less than an inch on concrete with stiff legs.

Wow! Quite a crash!
misterchill 4 years ago
Not to worry, noone got hurt in that specific crash. They were too busy celebrating that historic moment :P
It's better with gralles and the original soundtrack of the public's reactions, but thanks for sharing.
