The session bad, Kirkland, Panama Jack on drums, and saxophonist named Sears listened to Barbie Gaye sing the song and the band felt it would work well with what was at the time, a brand new style (a mix between r&b, jazz and calypso) that years later would be called "ska" This may be the first song ever recorded in the ska style. That's probably why Chris Blackwell chose it to be covered many years later. Truth is, the recording was years ahead of its time.
True, Lamper2! Morris Levy had absolutey nothing to do with writing this song. He tried to say he used a pseudonym. He knew about something the artists didn't know- licensing. Rovert spencer wrote the origina song and the singer, Barbie Gaye, changed a lot of the lyrics, and the session band led by Jamaican. (I believe named Kirkland) gave it a "ska" feel. The song was recorded in one take. Mr. Spencer was never paid and Ms. Gaye got $200.
This has the same 'groove' or 'feel' as Mr Lee by The Bobettes. Love Millie Small's version, but love this too. From way back in 1956 would you believe!!! Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.
you're 100% right. Robert spencer wrote the song and not only did Morris Levy add his name in the credits, but even tried to say the Robert Spencer was his pseudonym. And the worst part, spencer never got dime from Levy.
Beautiful shuffle feel in the rhythm section. Shows you how with world communication all the different types of music started to melt into one. You can hear Fats Domino and Bob Marley in this song.
Será que o original é sempre o melhor? Enfim, vocês decidem!

It's a 7" record. You can get a piece that you chuck in the middle to make it fit on modern turntables.
