correct me if im wrong but when he plays the cords and they all havee that one note in common thats basically what the pitch axis theory is about right ?
@acdcyoyoer Not exactly, pitch axis is changing the key to another with the same root. You could always have chords that share a note while staying on a single key, for instance
an E minor triad (E-G-B) and an A minor triad (A-C-E) share the E note, yet they're both present in the key of Gmajor/Eminor.
@ShredST well thats stupid... you are pretty much a metal guitar enthusiast trying to act like you know more about things than just metal, but really you just like technical guitar and have no knowledge of melody, you metalhead douchebag. Go listen to metallica you freak.
@eddieisfiction Well. I look at my music collection, and I say you are full of shit. :D Try to make reasonable arguments next time, instead of throwing insults that are based on almost pure assumptions.
@ShredST dude Im just drunk as hell tonight, its friday get over it...
honestly they are both great guitarists.... and you are judging based on some stupid observations believe it or not. One tries to add more technical ability to it, and one tries to sound more melodic and sexy... it reality, they are both probably equal.. they both can be jazzy, and progressive, and can get fusion sound down really well.
@jburde yeah but you arent in the middle of presenting something, lol its usually easier to speak of things with how it relates to modes when you are moving fast and presenting rather trying to find the exact name of a chord... its like hes explaining a formula rather than the specific equation itself.
I've noticed something recently. Players like him, who had to learn by ear, seemed to develop their own unique style, and are usually awesome players. Players today who watch millions of videos on how to play certain songs, and watch videos on how to play certain styles really play like shit. They turn out to be stupid hipsters that play off-key, simple, boring shit.
@Socioistic I think it is because they learn solos from a tab of a favorite song but have no idea how to jam within the key they are actually playing in. That is why it is so important to learn all the chords positions and the scales. As Guthrie says don't let the scales rule you just use them as a tool to expand on your talent. Jamming along to a backing tracks using your emotions and feelings is an important part of developng your ability to improvise.
@Socioistic I suspect that it's because people who learn by tabs and videos end up not listening to closely to what they're playing. They just learn the fingering and picking patterns. People who learn by ear are probably more likely to internalize what they've learned play.
I'd have to say that we are pretty damn lucky, even blessed, for you less secular types out there, to have such a creatively adept musician like Guthrie Govan create these videos for us. Free of charge no less. Think about that for a sec. Thank You (sincerely) Guitar World.
You have to be used to hearing odd things to be able to understand jazz/blues/rock mixtures. seeing as everyone is complaining i suggest you listen to allan holdsworth.
@TronicSpeedsta nah, i know what you mean. guthrie might literally be one of the best guitar players alive from a technical standpoint, but god some of his music is in league with 80s wankery. i love waves, fives and i could listen to him noodle all day... but good lord man
@TronicSpeedsta yeah, this chord progression really is cool and i'm not trying to start an argument by any means, it's just like i hear cool chord progression... then beep boop beep, let me tap all over this shit. i just hate tapping haha!
@erszebet you sir are an idiot open up your mind and ears and listen to the video instead of making comments about how its gay you may actually learn something

Guthrie is a Top, rare and original guitarist, not to mention he is MUSICAL in every way possible,
which a lot of players seem to forget these days.
He makes sense both musically AND technically.
And that is a very hard thing to achieve.
You can easily become extremely technical but lack feel and musical sense or the other way around,be bluesy and don't care about technique.
This man proves being MUSICAL and TECHNICAL at the same time is possible.
One of the best guitarists for sure !

He just gave the definition of Jazz music :
" you've got a triad and then you've got the wrong bass note " :)
Guthrie is great and sincere, an amazing musician !
