@Mezzotenor I hadn't thought of that, but Smallwood's style is certainly quite classically-grounded. If you like Schubertian music, you might be interested in a video I did the other day of a piece by Alexander Czersky, which has a real Schubert feel (to me).
this was one of billy the kids favorite songs along with "turkey in the straw" before it became an awful ice cream selling no good song. i dont think he was whistling either one before killing anyone though. lol!
Beautifully played! I hope you do check out the Chico Marx version in the film Animal Crackers. In typical Marx Brothers fashion, he introduces it as "One of my compositions, by Victor Herbert", neither statement being true.
You take me back to the 1940s, to my M.grandmother's home. I was playing the piano, my mother the mandolin, my uncles and father singing: we did not know what lay ahead and to what far distant places some of us would travel too for King and Country. The music is very much a happy image, for me, of the past and of the people who helped to prepare me for the Nazi Barbarians and my somewhat cold sea journeys to Arctic waters. Jannarta.
My grandmother died today and she learned me this song on organ. I would like to read her uligy next monday on this song but i kind seem to find the download any where on piano exept for this youtube video. Can u help me?
If u know how to download this song anywhere, please let me know the webadress cause im afraid to reveal my email adress here..
WOW! Sir you have just put Phil Coulter (an Irish Pianist), see my video's, to shame!!!!
I remember my Nann playing this, while my Granddad sang, all those many years ago. THANK YOU for bringing back long forgotten memories of happy times spent with my Grandparents.
Being reminded of this beautiful song now means I have a piece of music I can put to the montage of pictures of my Grandparents.
my father played it often when i was little.. he said the person who created this piece was very old and created this piece for his wife before he died
I youtubed the song cos i was hoping to find the original version hehe.. i have no idea what the original version is like.. whether it's an orchestrial or a piano solo like your one o_O
Thanks for the kind comment. This used to be a very well known song, and Smallwood's arrangement has a charm of its own. There is a huge amount of similar music from the 19th century, almost all forgotten now.
I don't know if there is a 'Schubert' influence or not, all I know is that it is a lovely piece, very well played.
