  • qualitatively different. lol

  • ahahha so true...that was the stupidest idea

  • is this based on a real proposal?

  • unfortunately!

  • I agree with the bill, if it's a true one.Not from Australia, so I don't know. I do know that the left in America tries to slant it to make you a racist if you say stuff like that here.I beleive that if you emigrate to another country because your homeland was a peice of shit, you should absolutely assimilate to that country's values and culture.I see it too much here.Immigrants come and create their own neighborhoods, refuse to learn English, and don't associate with anybody thats not like them.

  • Yeah, in theory that makes sense. They should just integrate. It would solve some of the problems associated with immigration and would fit the melting pot model. The problem is the assumption of their reasons for forming their own neighborhoods. Maybe you wouldn't mind, but a lot of Americans don't want a Sudanese refugee living near them,e.g. Immigrants face a lot of racism, making living together more comfortable+ if they are part of a large family group they want to be together.

  • I would agree with that if it weren't for all of the immigrants sending their money back to the homeland, and not planning on staying here for the rest of their lives. The Irish were brought over to America as indentured servants. Blacks as slaves. Jews under persecution. All of those mentioned were treated like shit when they arrived, and all assimilated. There is no excuse for the actions of todays immigrants.

  • Sort of, over a long period of time. But you know what? there are still Jewish neighborhoods, still black neighborhoods, and, well, there are still heavily Irish areas. As for sending their money back home, that sort of makes sense, you came here to earn money for your family after all. Sometimes trying to get them here with you. And, yeah, I think most of them are planning on staying here their whole lives, as long as some jerk doesn't deport them. Show me some stats saying otherwise.

  • Yes, those groups do tend to stay to their own neighborhoods. Humans naturally segregate. The point is that the new wave of immigrants don't want to assimilate. When the Jews, Irish, Africans, etc. came to America, they learned the language and the customs. You did not see billboards and advertising in their native languages. They tried to appease their new country's culture, not vice versa. There is no national pride with the new wave of immigrants.

  • I would say you are wrong. It is very important to them that their children learn English. Now, African slaves were forced to learn English, the Irish already knew it, and many European Jews weren't fluent until the second generation. Just because you move to a new country doesn't make is easy to learn a new language. Also, the billboards might be from advertisers trying to reach the demographic of first gen. immigrants. What is so bad about seeing billboards in other languages?

  • lol u keep on beating alextrippe in this argument

  • @tvdrpr

i get what you're saying but it's like a soft form of segregation created by an undertow of fear, distrust, etc. of the new arrivals. i dunno if you can stop it, not saying its right or wrong, but then you have enclaves of different cultural groups that don't mingle and blend that grow up never going to school with the people they'll have to connect with once they start working and functioning in society.

  • agreed thanks v much
