This movie has one of the absolute BEST opening songs in movie history. That is not hyperbole... I absolutely mean it. To say that it matches the movie doesn't do it justice... that's the minimum requirement for a piece of music. This music does more than set the perfect tone, it's extremely memorable in it's own right and makes everything after it seem more amazing as a result.
@Maytag99 I couldn't agree more. I'be watched the movie hundreds of times, the first time about 10 years ago and I still can't get this scene out of my head. This is amazing, you're right, the opening scene plus music, I keep listening to it all the time but it does strange things to my soul....:(
This is one of the most underated title sequences in cinematic history. Part of it has to do with the relative simplicity, but most probably has to do with the fact that the film wasn't received that well. I love Lynch but I'd put LH as one of his lesser efforts. Tons of great ideas here that just didn't click . Mulholland Drive is basically a perfected Lost Highway. It even has a similar credit sequence (drive down a dark street set to music, in that case the film's theme).
This was my first David Lynch film i have seen. Having said that, I was young when i saw this and it didnt make much sense to me; but i remember being blown away at what unfolding on the screen. Strange, baffling, terrifying and amazing. Which are all compliments, if your a Lynch fan...strange is good.
I have this soundtrack...I love it. I need to watch this movie again. I watched it in the 90s but I didn't understand symbolism like I do now. I just could not grasp it then but now that I know about some Lynch's journey in to finding pure conciousness I think I will appreciate this so much more.
This not my favorite Lynch, but it is one of the best 5 movies of the 90s, if not the best.
This opening scene is just amazing. The reason why Lynch is the true master is that he didn't ditch his style and turn into a mainstream director like many others. He took advantage of the new technology to improve his filmmaking techniques (look at Inland Empire).
David Lynch will forever be a true master of filmmaking.
the first david lynch film i saw was "twin peaks: fire walk with me". i saw it in my humanities class, and it was the weirdest fucking movie i've ever seen. and i mean that in the best way possible. but i've always, always wanted to see this movie.
Like I said he never lost it but was trying 2 experiment. He was acting and puting out less material. Ran into a creative dryspell. But its not like needs 2 work anymore. He'll never top his 70's stuff again.
I'm just doing the opposite you think. Saying "Puto Lynch" is like saying "Great Lynch" or something like that. If you read (and understand) the rest of the message, you'll see that i really really like him.
The minute I got in the cinema and the minute these titles started I knew I should leave. Man, I should've listened to myself, but I continued into a full 30 mins of the movie before I ran from the cinema. I even left my boyfriend still in there. But for some reason just beforethe video of his butchered wife I knew it would end as it began and that fried my mind; that's when I ran. Horrendos but brilliant. A true horror movie for the 21st century!
well, for instance, i cant see your original comment since 7 morons did a thumbs down on it. unless i try to reply to it. and your comment was innocuous
Oh thanks, I get what your saying. I didn't notice at first. Yeah, that is kinda weird people want to thumbs down someone's experience, especially as this movie is in my top 3 all time movies. Maybe they just read the first two line and that was enough to condemn me; fans can be very sensitive if they think something they love is being attacked, but there again fan is short for fanatic, lol. It would've been better if they'd left a comment as well so I knew what their problem was.
come on people, what's up with giving thumbs down to this comment, which does nothing more than recount someone's personal relationship to this movie. if you're not intelligent enough to understand what someone is trying to say when she's clearly using plain english, i highly doubt you have the intellect to fully appreciate a david lynch film.
They may be the titles BUT they are also the opening scene as this is the beginning of the journey onto The Lost Highway. The end scene also contains titles but this is a also a continuation of that endless journey so would be considered as the closing scene. The concept of this movie is in that unstoppable, repetitious journey the main character cannot escape. Well, that's my take on it. But man, there's no need to call anyone an idiot.
ok, whatever, i disagree. to me, this is the opening CREDITS. if not, then where ARE the credits in the movie? i just hate CREDITS. dont take my cussing so seriously. i have tourettes.
I saw the film in my college classroom and this opening scene had some sick bass when watched with a good sound system. but what a fuckin creepy movie
oh you must've been that guy on imdb that said to watch tatsuo while stoned, very original, maybe we can try grocery shopping while stoned and while like we're in repo man 'go' and try driving while stoned too
FUCK! Well, gonna try the next best thing: prescriptions + 60% alcohol + TP: last episode + Fire Walk With Me fucked up bits + Mulholland Drive best parts + best you tube clips of Lost Highway... I think i'm getting somewhere
not hard to work out. he kills his wife and cant deal with what hes done so he becomes in his head another person with another fantasy life. but his real life invades his fantasy and he has a breakdown at the end. Lynch said he was listening to bowies outside album and heard this osng and suddenly the whole opening sequence came to him.
I was barely a teenager when I saw it. Suffice to say that that would explain why I didn't get it. I'll have to watch it again just to appreciate the story.
I rather think it was the young guy who was actually the murderer. And the saxophone guy's life, including the murder of his wife, was a fantasy. I saw many hints to that in the movie, but, of course, I might be wrong.
you could look at it that way, but david lynch movies aren't really meant to be explained like a storybook. as he has stated many times in interviews, his films speak for themselves through the art itself--the medium, the characters, the music, the emotions. that is what you get out of it, and it really only degrades the experience to try and explain his art with any certainties... (that's my opinion, and i think most people who work on his films would agree)
i cant understand it too well.. i got lost great bands did soundtrack for it, smashing pumpins-eye. nine inch nails-the perfect drug- and bowie of course
