I am a halfling ninja (3.5) with AC of 19 (Flat-footed and Touch are also 19), reflex save of +10, Sudden Attack. weapon finesse and quick draw. I also have a Handy Haver Sack which holds 100lbs of stuff but while always be 5lbs. Btw, I have 20 Dex and +5 Dex Mod. I am a dodgey little bitch.

I was DMing for my brother and a few of his friends the other day. and never before have i seen a man roll 4 nat. 20's in a row.. and I go by the old school rule of 2 nat. 20's in a roll, and you automatically kill the monster... I was so pissed and amazed at the same time. needless to say that the level 1 characters, slaughtered my monsters, thanks to the barbarian, (the guy that rolled the 4 natural 20's in a row).

If you really like to get into the details, go with 3.5, definitely. If you just want to play, 4th is probably better. I hear Gnomes were removed in 4th, though. I don't know if I could deal with that. I got a player who really likes Gnomes, see.

Oh, I definately agree. What I like about 3.5 is the options available. 4e feels to limiting compared to what I've gotten used to in 3.5. BTW, Gnomes are a monster manual race. You could still play one.

Yeah, I don't get that, Teiflings are a class race and Gnomes are monster races... I'll stick to 3.5 thank you very much. On the same token, you could still play as a gnome, just as I've sometimes played as a Kobold, but it's unnecessary to think that Gnomes are a monster race.

@davethedm I have played 4e, though admittedly only once. My feelings about it are still pretty much the same, and even people I know who play it agree with me. Currently we're playing a Pathfinder campaign, which I like more, though I don't know if it will mean I'll ever stop playing 3.5

@fairydragon right know at my strategic gaming club at school we are playing pathfinder witch i like better than 3.5 because i am a full wizard and ill stay faithfull to that the problem is that in 3.5 i had limited 0 level spells, 2 1st level spells and 1 2nd.

now i have unlimited 0 level which makes me usefull because i have 17 int which will help too.

In my opinion, the best way to be useful to the party is to strategically choose your spells so that they will benefit your party. if you are in a specialized class, choose spells that will help battle, but also some that may help when interacting with NPC's.

I'm an aspiring DM, and I've been looking for some kind of DMing guide that's perhaps a bit more straightforward than the official book... or, rather, with a plainer explanation of the more technical aspects of DMing... any advice? I'm quite anxious to begin world-building, but it strikes me that it'd be rather myopic of me to design a continent without knowing how things work...

Take a look at Dungeon Mastering for Dummies. It has a lot of good advice on the topic. Keep in mind that every DM does it differently. Some plan out everything, others only keep sparse notes. It might take time to figure out what works for you.

Incidentally, just in your personal opinion, do you prefer the sort of story that focuses more on politic and intrigue? Or, as the books call it, "bash-in-the-door" games?

I DO love combat, but I like a good driving story and fun roleplay to back that up. So I guess you could say I like a little of both.

Hum. See, the combat is where I think I'd falter. I like making characters and such... worlds and all that stuff. I've been making this kind of "holy war" storyline involving Nerull, Pelor and Boccob, but as I said, I can't do anything without combat.

Also, how often would you say you give out magic items?

I'm currently planning a how to vid on DMing that may answer some of your questions (I hope), although to address magic items: Rarely. They can unbalance things if you aren't careful. Make sure what you give them isn't better than they could afford. Remember that whatever the monsters have, the party gets when they're dead.
