When I was in college, my teacher boiled water in a paper cup over a gas flame. I thought it was pretty cool. I wouldn't recommend drinking from a melted bottle too often, prolly lots of carcinogens in there. But if it was life or death, yeah.
Great video! Beer bottles or any glass bottle would work too. For survival purposes, I guess it is okay to temporary use this method just until help arrived. I'm sure the chemicals in the plastic will eventually get to you. Either die from thirst today or die from cancer 30 years down the road.
first off dont get me wrong, that would be great in the wilderness if it were a last resort, but i wouldnt reccamend it...because when heated plastic will release chemicals into the substance in the bottle beleived to cause cancer...which is also why i wont drink hot coffie etc. out of styrofoam cups from gas stations and what not.
@TheAlphaFaction You can burn out a cavity in a log and heat water in it with hot rocks, or do the same with water in a pit in the ground lined with a plastic bag. Then there are containers which can be made of birch bark or paper and heated "conventionaly" over the fire.
i figured this out on my own :) i tried it an from personal expleriance it is CRUCIAL that theere is absolutely no air at all in the bottle or it will pop and it wont work
There is also a video here on Youtube of a paper cup being used to boil water. That is not something that I would normally choose to boil water in, then again neither is a plastic bottle.
Just stand it in the embers, no real need for the tripod. watch the bottle. as soon as it distorts pick it up. make a hot drink, have a wash or do washing up. Better still take a metal pan!!!
THe way I've seen it done is by filling the bottle to expell any water, then screw the top back on and drop the whole thing on the fire. It did not shrink and you could not see the boil. The water just stopped the bottle from burning. It did not explode, like I expected it to do. Never done it myself though....
I saw this on man vs. wild. he kept swinging the bottle back and forth so it would not hang directly over the fire and receive direct heat. This would make it so the bottle did not shrink as much and loose allot of water.
@FooFromaStreet if you collected it from a stream or pond, and it wasn't potable. boiling the water kills the parasites and bacteria in the water and allows it to be safely drank.
good vid, only your supposed to keep the bottle next to the fire for 45-50 mins, and you can use it beetween 3-4 X,it doesnnt necceserally boil the water but pasteurises it,just an FYI guys, good vid,ali
Doing it once or twice wont do much to you but it can cause the bottle to release more diethylhydroxylamine or DEHA thats if you expose the bottle to heat it goes from .02 to 32 which is a big incress.. can be unsafe/unhealthy but will it kill you no.. over a long peroid of time sure.. depends on the bottle really.. even adding boiling water can speed the breakdown up.. lots of info online just google it..
You can boil water in a plastic bottle if you fill the bottle up with water and make sure their is no air bubles in the bottle thats th secret then put it in embers i have tried this it does work
can you redo this video but next time fill the bottle to the brim and put the cap on it that is the way it works best. it needs to be airtight with no air in the bottle.
it does work but id never do it, simply cuase when u heat plastic up you release its chemicals,, and it messes up your body over the long run,, with your hormones. But im sure in a once in a lifetime thing would be alright, but id prefer to use metal cup or something other than plastic. alot of chemicals and toxins will be released on the plastic bottle,,, not good.
I would suggest you do this over a tall coal bed rather than an active flame fire to lap at the bottle. As has been said I would be worried about chemicals from the plastic getting in the water. Good experiment though and good vid. 4 stars
this is great for the last resort, but when you heat the plastic the carcinogens are released into the water. dont get me wrong i would do it myself if i needed to.
We know about all the nasty stuff released from the bottle, but if its that or get super sick from bad water, I will take the chemicals from the bottle. I think you would have a better chance to survive the chemicals once or twice than the parasites in dirty water.
I agree. This was more to see if it could be done, as we had not done it before, and have some fun trying something new. We did not drink the water as we were not in a survival situation.

couldn't you just pasteurize the water and prolong the life of the bottle

You won't die drinking water boiled in bottles just once.
You might from hundreds bottles of the same water.
