The Soda Ash pre-soak raises the pH level of the garment or fabric to approximately 10.5. Raising the pH level of the solution that the fabric or garment is soaked in raises the level of negative hydrogen ions in the dyeing environment. The chemical bonding process uses these ions in the reaction. Pre-soaking in Soda Ash fixer solution is what allows the fiber reactive dyes to work at room temperature.
@oneshrivledweenie I did it too with a tshirt and it ended up too thick too. what i learned to do is only use the front side of the tshirt for the mandala (so you only have one layer of fabric). It is quite confusing to tie though. Then dye another pattern to the back of the shirt.
@JaneBritany I would guess that the "center" point you are using is the outside of the fabric. Try the fold on a tshirt and see if that helps you visualize the "center" any better. Hope that helps.
@aishumaj1 Yes and no... This was a fairly thin bandana, you could do two or three or more layers with thin fabric. I wouldn't even try this fold on thick fabric such as sweatshirt material. So it depends on your fabric. and my best advice, as with an tie dyeing, is to experiment and try it out :)
way to go on the fire look. i was thinking it was going to be super sloppy cuz you just tossed those colors right on there but it wasn't. thanks for the video man.

After watching this video, I wasn't exactly worried about..... anything! So far, this is the best technique I've been able to find on youtube. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the technique-- it's really great!
btw: after your dye has cured, simply soak in cold water to release all traces of soda ash. You then wash the fabric in warm water with Synthropol (or your regular laundry detergent). Vinegar is used for acid dyes, as a dye assist to add more oxygen sites on the fibers.
i totally thought that would look like shit but it actually looks pretty sweet man

will this work with a cotton shirt too?
shiboodles 1 year ago
@shiboodles yes, depending on the thickness of the shirt. I don't think that it would work too well with a sweatshirt.
