I think the Coriolis effect isn't created by the earth's spin and angle, but rather because of the influence of magnetic north and south poles. Gravity is a form of magnetism, like Ed Leedskalnin the creator of Coral Castle stated in his pamphlets.
Actually, the guide used the same basin for all three demonstrations (she just picked it up and moved it). A few feet North or South of the equator did result in either a marked clockwise or counterclockwise swirl.
This was just one of several peculiar phenomenas that happen at the equator and it was worth every cent to see them. That place was one of the neatest I've ever been to on a vacation.

Thats nothing to do with the equator its the design of the basin that means theres no swirl/vortex, it doesn't always drain that way.
Hope they didn't pay to see that! :)
