@TheReinaldomartinez In my time as a long haul trucker, I came across many similar crossings in the US, in fact , probably more due to the greater population density in the US compared to Canada. Don't be so quick to judge, or toss around insults. On the other hand, just looked at your channel, clearly you are no more than a common troll, so I will disregard your future attempts at ruffling feathers.
@hayenga Actually, I live not far from Sainte-Hyacinthe, QC and although level crossings across major highways is not unusual, this is a flat river valley where it can get quite foggy or snowy in the winter. What is unusual about the A-20 crossing the A-20 is a freeway or thruway. By most North American Standards, any limited access motorways is not supposed to have the following: level train crossings and traffic lights. Autoroute 20 has both.
Those aren't weird.... check out the Ring Road in Regina, SK we have two main lines crossing within 500m of eachother... CP Lanigan Sub and CN Regina Sub... speed limit is 100km/h and trains cross the road 3 times a day at minimum.
@hayenga ...I think he was refering to how there is no arm gate stopping cars from crossing and that someone might easily run the warning lights (like running a red light) and get hit
There is NOTHING unsafe or crazy about any railroad crossing in any country that is protected by crossbucks and flashers that trigger when a train approaches the crossing. What is unsafe is drivers who will not stop for an activated crossing because they think they have the right of way over any train, which is definitely NOT the case! The law protects the train; NOT you. They're heavy; you're not. They can't stop quickly; you can.
Mr Lance, that line is there since 1894, the United Counties Railway, a long time before Highway 20 was created. It became the D&H's Montreal Quebec & Southern Railway main line later into CNR. This is what's left of CN's St,Jude S/D, now the St. Jude Spur serving some industries north of #20. All trains must come to a fullstop before proceeding across the well-protected highway. There is no danger and your driving is A1.
Would that line crossing the highway be a service track (labelled as Exempt here in the States)? We have a similar crossing on K-32 (Kansas Highway) just outside the gravel pit/cement plant east of Bonner Springs (just east of the K-32/K-7 interchange). Speed limit is 45 MPH over that service track (the UP main line is parallel along the south side of K-32.
I'm willing to bet that rail line was there before the road was put in. I don't see that being a problem unless people don't pay attention, or try to beat the train. Otherwise, it's a rail crossing not unlike zillions of others.
you mit think this is a bit shocing but there is one oned by bnsf and amtrak in Richmond BC but it has got 4 cantalaevers and 2 grades with lights, gates and sighnes and it is only one trak but it crossis a huge highway. from supertrainkid
There are level crossings all over the world. They are perfectly safe considering you don't run red lights even if you are on a highway. And to me it looks like there's plenty of visibility to go round there.
@LanceCampeau simple. society grows, and things change and some things dont. just think of the olden days when rail road crossings did not exist. if you completely dead to the rail road crossing lights blinking and the warning bell going off, then you dont need a license period. after all, you said in the video yourself that your driving is more dangerous than that crossing....
I've been on the train that crosses the highway. It is the Amtrak that runs between Montreal and New York. CP own the line, I think. I had to do a double when we crossed it. I am glad though, that it is the 20. I try to avoid it whenever possible. The A-20 is a boulevard in Dorion, runs switched over as it passes through the Tucotte Yards in Lasalle and this. It must have been fun being a Quebec freeway designer in the 60s.

Here in Louisiana we have a railroad crossing over Highway 90.
It is a spur track into a industry, i don't know if they use it still but trains go really slow there so if you can't see a train in the middle of a big open area, like where you were at, then there is something wrong lol.
doubt it dude, chances are the highway was there befor the spur. Its more than likely going to a factory, and you need roads before you can build factorys.
we have one on our freeway in Saskatoon here, but it is just a low speed, low traffic spur line, this crossing is probably similar. The warning system will be designed to alert drivers at the highway speed, and trains will travel slow at off-peak hours across it.
What's really scary about Autoroute 20 is the Champlain Bridge bus lane in Montréal. The bus lane is reversible, meaning that half of the day busses travel in the wrong direction. Imagine my surprise driving down a divided freeway and being confronted with a bus on the wrong side of the road going the wrong way. Of course the lone sign explaining this is written in dense French in tiny writing on a faded sign.
Yeah, but you wouldn't see that on an Interstate freeway. Autoroute 20 is the most major freeway in Québec. It would be like having a railway crossing on I-95.
@rolls283 I see your point. However, let's be honnest: If you can't see the flashing light (or the other stopped cars) from far enough to brake, you really deserve to be revoked of your driver's licence, cause you'd be declared as legaly blind >_>
Yeah,I really don't know why there is a railroad crossing on the highway 20 at this town.
Usually, they assumed would built a railroad overpass over the highway 20 or otherwise. This means that the highway 20 to pass over this railroad track by two highway overpass.
It's really stupid the the Quebec Ministry of Transport and the government did not think about that. In my opinion, its have been more logical to build this bridge, because it is a freeway section.
I know that crossing at St-Hyacinthe. It seems to be unsafe but it's actually not. You may have noticed the white roadsign at the right of the road, at 0:06 of the video; it means that vehicles that must normally stop at level crossings are not required to do it there. It suggests that the railroad is almost unused, and train crews have to take some security measures before crossing that point.
It's a very rare sign; I've never seen anyone like it elsewhere in Québec.
To see a clear image and a description of the sign, make a Google image search with the following keywords:
