  • @Tuliflames Eric Marienthal

  • God I love Franks tone here.... Wow Frank

  • Frank Gambale, and Brett Garsed - both from Australia.

Is their something in the water over there?

  • the thing that hurts is that you can heard this music only in porn movies ...

  • @asxefv

you could not concentrate on the porn if the music was that complex / good : )

  • Listen to Pattitucci, possibly 2nd best player on this track!

  • 3:40 The bass player can't hold it back! lol.

  • A yellow guitar with matching shoes. FG 's the man, and mind you, not just because of his awesome shoes :P

  • Comment removed

  • @kesx - Are your parents siblings?

  • @kesx still blows away everything you got in your fav videos list.

  • he's like mel gibson's good twin...

  • 3:15 is sick!

  • From the GRP "Super Live" show in 1987...

When GRP Records released a videotape of this show, this classic track was left off...good GOD, Why???

It's on the cd, though, but a different yet still excellent performance from one of the 5 shows on the Tokyo tour.

  • Damn !

  • Fabulous!

  • What kind of guitar is frank using here? 87 is before ibanez started producing the FGM series. Possibly a 540 saber?

  • @LivebyitDiebyit

Yes it is a custom sabre selected by Frank as his guitar of choice before his official endorsement model from Ibanez.

I own this actual guitar seen in video and it's super light weight with a great balanced sound, no wonder he used it to such great effect. Date is 1986.

I am fortunate to also own a 580T, which is the sabre telecaster style, which is just super rare , mine is a one off finished in pearl white.

  • @DAVEBLISS2007

Very lucky to have such a guitar. I have been searching for a FGM 100 for a while now. Very rare. Have been entranced by his models since the ripe age of 13 when i stumbled on his Chopbuilder vhs

  • Awesome!!!

  • Digging the matching shoes to the guitar

  • I just love they franks involuntary facial and body movements. It as though the guitar is connected to his nervous system,LOL! Love it!! I have noticed over the years that when i see guitarists do this, they are some of the best i ever seen. Andy timmons is another guy that really feels it like this during solo's. It's all about the emotionnal connection to the intrument i think.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Awesome!!!

  • damn, what a greaaat solo!!

  • Frank is a monster..a guitar god and I love his style of playing. Not to mention this band and this music, just perfect. Anyway...I think Frank was a bit stuck when playing this solo..like he was a bit nervous. He can do far better than that.

  • para seguir a un saxo y aun teclado hay que tener mas que tecnica hay que ser frank gambale

  • Frank's amazing here, as always, but to me one of the coolest things about this is the way Chick was comping behind Frank's solo. Great players always listen to each other and try to let there rhythms accent and compliment the soloist. These guy are masters at this. Young musicians just starting out; listen, listen, listen. Then play.

    Peace.

  • @onegnarlyguitar

i believe one should practice 100 times as much as they play...

  • Very well said, my friend.

  • @onegnarlyguitar You have to be fucking kidding me dude! You obviously haven't seen frank live and on this tour which i had the blessing to have seen him many times as well as this electric band tour. Frank is never EVER nervous dude. You got it twisted ass backwards. I just don't understand how people make such obviously wrong observations. That shit make me hate you dude.

  • the master of sweep

  • KEYTAR YES!

  • Wow this is like the sort of music they play in the background in shows on the discovery chanel. What genre is it Prog, Alternative jazz rock?

  • This is fusion mate!:)

  • @eirikroland

    right on man!

    Nothing beats fusion

  • It's Jazz/Rock Fusion - often just called "Fusion".

  • wow!!!!!!!!!

    yeah!

  • I agree. this is a great season for Frank's playing. I have many of his CDs and A present for the Future continues to be my favorite of his.

  • Frank's guitar tones on that record, just like on this live cut, are heavenly.

  • @swilder168 His tone on "The Great Explorers" is so tasty as well.

  • Personally I like this period of FG's career best .

    Absolutely fantastic playing.

And his album "A present for the future"

  • SUPER!!!!

  • He is playing the guitar that I now own, anybody interested in buying it?

It's very melodic, certainly not heavy metal, more jazzy than you think for such a thin body. Maybe one of the best guitars to ever come from Ibanez.

  • FGM 100 ? if yes I'd like but where do you live ? I live in Italy ....

  • how much are you after for it?

  • @DAVEBLISS2007 How much and where is it?

  • I wonder how Alex Scolnick would fit in Chicks band...

  • You can see why Frank has always been Chick's first choice as guitarist. Sorry, Al, you're number 2!

  • I'm sure some of it has to do with Al having his own successful solo career..but I like Frank and Al's phrasing.

  • Yes I do love Al. I was listening to Al before id ever heard Frank's playing. He and Frank are both amazing guitarists.

  • this was recorded not long before his famous album Live, you can hear he's got this same smooth sound

  • He sweeps like no one i have ever seen, but the most impressive thing is he knows the perfect time to speed things up and then do some really cool phrasing!!!

I quote from the master himself Allan Holdsworth- "he's insane"

  • he's got this unique sound and his own melodies and scales, even if he didnt play that fast, it will sound original and awesome

  • The best guitar in the world!

  • Let me rephrase that, Best guitarist ever!!

  • @benno369 NOEL GALLAGHER OF OASIS IS BETTER

  • @ieatsick I'm not even gonna dignify that with a proper response.

  • @benno369 I DONT UNDERSTAND, ARE U SAYING FRANK IS AS GOOD AS NOEL?

  • @ieatsick you eat sick.

  • @benno369 i know i told u that first

  • @ieatsick i love youtube because of comments like this

  • @ieatsick - i love comments like this, joking or not :)

  • Best guitarist of the past 30 years!!

  • GREAT FRANK !!

  • GODS

  • Great stuff from all players - reminds me of Uzeb :)

  • The coolest stuff is when he is not doing his trademark sweep licks.

  • This is over twenty years ago and he was at the top of his game then! Amazing. player but a great musical sensibility too.

  • smokin!!!!i love their song KALEIDOSCOPE!!!!from this same album!!!

  • John Patitucci is such a babe

  • this is one of my favourite youtube video... i keep looking at it and i think it's pure perfection... the end... is amaaaaaaazing

  • Masterful! Gambale takin' fools to SCHOOL!

  • These guys were the shiznit (lol)

  • who's the saxophonist?

  • he`s Erick Mariental.

  • man 3:15 is crazy

  • Frank at the top!

  • now this is funky fusion!!!!

  • Thank you for this! This from a time (Arsenio Hall)

where I really got into Chick and Frank.

    Priceless footage.

  • love that guitar sick finish

  • He has such good sax tone!

  • Awesome! I saw Frank with CCEB in the summer of 1987 at the JVCC Jazz Fest. A few months before that I saw him performing with Vital Information, and I got to meet him (and Steve Smith). He was very cool and down to earth.

  • yes, everybody says the same! He must be a great fellow!

  • That was pretty baddass

  • All the great ones have signature licks. And that sweep run starting at 1:33 that you point out is one of FG's.

  • that may be the illest run I have ever heard

  • 2:24 to 2:34 is sick too.

  • The lick that starts on 1:33 is a lick that Gambale plays in almost every video that I've watched.

  • frank gambale o melhor! =D

  • John Pettituchi on Bass? Dave Weckyl on drums? Eric Rosenthal on sax? Am I right? Tight as hell rhythm section regardless!!! Chick always had the best players. Scott Henderson played guitar with him when I saw him once and Frank Gambale the other time. Awesome!

  • you forgot chick corea on the piano

  • C'est très beau

  • anyone knows the name of this video...??

i wish i had the entire concert with FG...

  • This version is way cooler than the original recording...FG such a good player

  • I wish the full recording of this were up; Time Track and A View from the Outside are my favorite tracks on Light Years. There is a live recording of Time Track on the GRP Super Live in Concert CD (1987), but the CD is long out of print, so I haven't heard it. I heard it was very good, though.

  • You can buy the album on Itunes...

  • absolutely amazing! I especially got crazy at the end of the songs! Beautiful harmonies!

  • the way is see it is... i love gambale and meola. Their style is what makes them who they are as individuals which are both genius even if they are both different. I love both pat metheny and shawn lane and no question about lane has WAY more chops than metheny ( he's prob. got more chops than anybody) but its their music, their style as whole that makes them so great.

  • Was fortunate enough to have a week long (or just under) class with him at the National Guitar Summer Workshop years ago. Very nice guy, great sense of humor. Definitely made me look at picking and patterns differently.

  • Great touch on this Ibanez guitar,it's an "S" series,i got one,and the neck is a highway!!!

Frank is an incredible guitar-player,and his sound is beautiful.

  • I guess you have to put yourself in Al's place. He only has two choices: 1)Write off anyone who plays cooler ideas using means other than alternate picking as "cheaters" or 2)Re-learn how to play the guitar in his 50's. The guy is a dinosaur...his time has passed.

  • Pure Genius!!!! Been listening to him for over 20 years and he keeps getting better. FG the Lord Of The Guitar!!!

  • 5 stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!! long live gambale!

  • A much better guitarist that Al Di Meola. Technical ability but with a great feel and emotion.

  • Yeah, I never liked his music but still I used to respect Al di meiola before, But after he said that Sweeping and legato are cheating... I lost all of it....

  • Di Meola can be arrogant and makes stupid statements. He probably couldn't sweep pick like Frank anyway so he says its cheating. Sweeping is just economy picking but is actually very difficult to do well. Why alternate pick if all the notes are in the same direction. And legato just makes the guitar sound smoother and more saxaphone like. Cheating? Nah....

  • Yeah dude...

  • totally agreed! Aldi meola is an arrogant prick, i hate arrogant musicans. Maybe a reason why i never really liked aldi meolas music. No one can even come close to franks technic, by the way maybe a hint for meola: listen to the album " natural high", there gambale plays on accoustic and guess what: it even sounds more technical complex and brilliant than on electric guitar which proves that aldi is the shit and gambale the master

  • lol he really said that? xD where?^^

well, dimeola has a different style, so maybe not very good to compare those 2, but still, both have amazing chops and should be punished an go to hell for their playing :D

  • Yeah, in his instructional dvd..... there even is a discussion forum full of insults for Al.. I dont remember the site name, but I searched "Al Di Meiola on sweeping and legato" and found it.....

  • I read an interview with Frank in 1993 in polish magazine "Jazz Forum" and he said "I love Al Di Meola and tried to be as fast as he but I can't do this. I must to find other way."

  • Hi przemekb1975,

I don't think players at Gambale's and Meola's level care who is faster, it's about the music.

Having said that, Gambale is clearly faster when sweeping arpeggio's when compared to Meola alternate picking scales <----not that it matters but it's clearly the case.

  • Yes, as well as when Frank sweeps scales.

  • @sweepfast They both play a totally different music. when it comes to technique, as per altered picking every guitarist should follow what Al did. I think Frank must have referred to this in that interview.

When it is sweep picking, Frank is the number one master in the world. Probably. As per vibratos to me Gary Moore is the top. etc...

  • Totally awesome performance and great composition. Frank really shines in this vid.

  • Always the right note choice....amazing

  • Great solo ! check out another one in my videos...

  • haha coowl to see the young john patitucci on bass with the same drummer that's helps him out in his instruction video.

  • That is a nice guitar! It must be the FGM300. It has the tremelo. Isn't it an S series endorsed by Frank? Is that right?

  • do you've got the whole video?

  • keytar!

  • he is a god!!!!

  • Wow, was that really 20 years ago? I've seen this line-up live a few times... just great!

I think Chic brought out the best in Frank.

  • os caras já tocavam exageradamente bem nessa época, imaginem hoje como estão tocando

  • He's so fookin amazing! Every line sounds fresh and clear!

  • why do you disable ratings for all your videos?

  • i am not fan of this kind of music , too straight in a way but here it is really great stuff ( rythm, harmonic ideas ) i like it

  • straight for the first overview but when you listen really its much more than that!

  • Frank is just the essence of greatness. That solo is so right on. Tonally and expressively it is so on the money. His ability to build a solo in waves, layers is just sensational. I have seen him live a number of times and have talked to him quite a bit and he is the epitome of class.

  • you are a good player, but you can't compare this with yours. other class of playing.

  • at 3:29 gambale make a mistake i think no ? he start the solo too early.

  • i think it was alright. the guy on the sax took his mouth away a split second before frank started the solo.

  • fantastico!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah. frank in earlier days. very tasteful.

  • epic piece with an probably one of the best line ups ever. Any chance of putting the full song up?

  • Hi,

I am glad you enjoy this clip. I don't have the full song. I downloaded this clip from a file sharing website and this was all that was in the file.

    Sorry.

  • nice to see this vid is back. i didn't find it for a while?
